From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 719 Date: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 2:15 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 719- Tuesday 3 Sep A few odds and ends By Joe Boling I was looking at a gramster's collection of chits this week; he has them in four-pocket PVC pages, with, in many cases, photocopies of the booklet covers in the same pockets with the chits. I noticed that he has acetate sleeves inside the PVC pockets, which is a good precaution. However, he has the photocopies inside the acetate sleeves with the chits. This could be a problem. Black photocopy toner will transfer to other objects (I don't have enough experience with color toner to comment on it). Think of the letters you have received that were printed on laser printers, and the text has transferred to the opposite side of the fold while the letter was in transit. If you are going to store photocopies with your numismatic items, don't keep them in contact. Now, in the instant case, one might think, OK, I'll keep the chits in the acetate sleeves and put the photocopies outside. Wrong solution; photocopy toner will adhere to PVC even faster than to another piece of paper. Most of you have seen what happens if you put a membership card printed on a laser printer into a PVC billfold pocket; when you take the membership card out, half of the toner will stay in the pocket. Solution--put both chits and photocopies in separate sleeves, unless they can sit in the same sleeve without overlapping each other. As for using acetate sleeves in PVC pages, it's a precaution, but not a solution. PVC will generate acid fumes that easily seep into the sleeves in the pockets. I think I have related the case of the proof medals that were frosted by the PVC pages they were in, through (or around) the Mylar windows in the 2x2 cardboard flips. Next item. In going through a collection of Latin American counterfeits this week, I ran across some Mexican circulating checks from Torreon, Coahuila, 1913. These were all drawn by local banks on each other, to be payable in Mexico City. They were needed because the railroad was closed and cash could not be moved up the line from Mexico City; meanwhile, General Francisco Villa (Pancho Villa) was demanding cash with which to pay his troops (thus the connection to the gram). All of the ones I saw are stamped FALSO, but Pick vol 1 says that even these are actually genuine. I can imagine that the poor quality of the production caused some to be suspected, and perhaps stamped, or the stamps could have been applied once the checks were paid. There are no standard security features; the checks are not printed on safety paper, though they are handsigned (except some low denominations on one of the banks). The paper has a manufacturer's watermark saying OLD HAMPSHIRE BOND, which can run horizontally or vertically. Parts of it were visible in four of eight checks that I examined. Last item. Recall Fred's dictum that the only bargain is the opportunity to buy. I was browsing through the prices realized from the Lyn Knight 23-24 Aug sale, and came across a non-descript $20 1929 (type I) national bank note. It has ugly edge tears, is trimmed into the frame at the top, and shows much wear (and all this is on the face; I can only guess how wretched the back is). Hardly a desirable note. The catalog grade is VG (don't ask me how they arrived at that, with portions of the note missing). The description says that it is the third small size note reported, with one large size also known. The estimate is $1750-2500. The note sold for $6038. Obviously two collectors recognized an opportunity that might not occur again within their lifetimes. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== My various inboxes runneth over. After being away for four days (and away from computers (well, at least from the internet)), I am back in the editor’s chair and more than a little overwhelmed with the mass of stuff demanding attention. I am working on it! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, I agree that the "Greatest Collection" is certainly a subjective call. While I will never be a Marv Mericle, I have been able to accumulate a pretty decent collection. I have in CU or better a basic collection (less the 471 $5, 521, 541 and 591 $5 and $10). I have those notes but just not in CU. (I will get them). As far as printings go, I am only missing the 472 2nd .50, 481 2nd $5, $10, 481 4th .25, .50 and 1.00, 521 2nd 5.00, 641 2nd 5.00. I also have the 691 Series, both printings, and the 701 second printing along with a 691 $20 replacement. If any one has any of the above that I need then let me know at billsing97@aol.com Thanks, I am getting close. Bill McNease Dear Editor, What happened to Gram 715 and 716? Doug Bell Dear Doug, Oh no, a bean counter! We have a firm policy on Gram numbering. Numbers that cheat the editorial staff of credit for a Gram are not tolerated and will be corrected. Errors that cheat subscribers of Grams will (be tolerated). Now that we have [apprantly] been caught is a little, er, error, we will extend all subscriptions by two issues. Creation, ye, planning no. Seriously for a moment , if I can. It looks like the missing numbers are the result of our (my) attempt to create Friday through Monday Grams on the Thursday before I left town. This is certainly not my style. Grams are normally created minutes (or moments) before distribution. This suits my personality and the medium that we are exploiting. editor ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 London Paper Money Fair, September 1, 2002, The Bonnington Hotel, 92 Southhampton Row, London WC1, England, Pam West, P.O.
