From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 720 Date: Wednesday, September 04, 2002 12:46 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 720 Wednesday 6 Sep 2002 Selling My collection By Marv Mericle I was pleased to read Marcus Turner's article about my MPC collection. I can say one thing about it. It was a great pleasure collecting and assembling the complete set. Phil once wrote what is a complete set. That is still open for debate. Mine is a complete set of basic notes. They are not all perfect, but I tried to assemble the best I could. I believe that meeting the different people who helped me, and those who shared their time and talent with me is what made this not only complete, but a great amount of history. Not only of the notes, but the people who saved them in the first place. I will have to remind everyone who may read this that Fred will always be a part of any collection (be it complete or not). He has said many a time, your notes are mine, they are just on loan to you. You may have paid for them, but someday they will be back with me! Trust me, what he said is true. It may not be today, tomorrow, or the next year, but they have or will (or both) pass through his hands. I think what I have leaned (and still leaning) from MPC collecting has increased my understanding of why people share their hobby with others. With the help of all the other collectors and dealers, I was able to complete my collection in what I considered a short time. Not only do I have a complete set, but I was able to screen collections and dealers stock for serial numbers to complete notes with the last two digits the same within a series. As some on you may know, my collection was stolen when my house was burglarized. The FBI has able to apprehend the people who did it, and found my MPC collection. It was still complete. Nothing was missing. When the collection was return to me, I decided that I wanted everyone to see it. I have exhibited it at many, many shows. Some of the bigger shows were the ANA, FUN, MEMPHIS, CENTRAL STATES, AND INDIANA STATE. I have also shown it at local club shows. Even though it is being sold, I am still doing research on the vignettes. There is a no ending field of things to do with your MPC collection. And a never ending way to collect these pretty pieces of paper. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Well, yesterday after putting out Gram 719 in which I confessed to the world that Doug Bell caught us cheating on the Gram count, I found that it was more complicated than I thought. Gram 715 WAS sent. Unfortunately, the subject line for email said Gram 714 even though it was correct on the Gram masthead. I am not sure about 716. Does anyone have Gram 716? It might have been a similar problem to 714/715. Later today or tomorrow, we will rebroadcast Gram 715. It will be marked in subject line as a “makeup” Gram or something similar. If we locate or find a Gram 716, we will do the same. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Esteeeeeemed Editor, The MPC collection is sold and I have instructed the buyer how to pay Dung. After the payment arrives, I will hand-carry it back and send it via registered mail to him in mid-September when I return to the USA. The owner will be happy to know that I missed three pieces, so he is getting three more than expected. Dung thanks you and everyone else involved and will use the money with other monies to build his new house. I have had Dung go around the streets and collect all of the MPC. So far, it is not much in numbers and totals about sixty pieces. And all of the grades are "circulated", but I will make another list and email it to you tomorrow for those Gramsters collecting by number and/or print position. There is really not much MPC around this trip and I have only seen one really grubby military club token. Things are drying up over here and the total supply can be really estimated in the near future. That is all from over in Ole Saigon for today. I received an email from "Kevinn517@hotmail.com" and it was returned as undeliverable. Please post this letter in the next Gram so he will know to send me another email address. Thanks. Howard (Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com) Dear Howard, The Gram sells! Aside to readers. The above is a composite of several letters sent by our wandering reporter. Editor Dear Esteemed (Steamed) Editor, Thursday I received Ski's gram and it was numbered 714; on Friday I got the next gram and it was numbered 714; on Saturday the next gram arrived and it was 717! Should Friday's gram be 715? If so, where is 716? Is it just me or do my fellow gramsters have the same trouble? Roger Urce Dear Overworked Editor, I hate to see unnecessary expense incurred by any publication that accepts me as a subscriber. You advised Doug Bell all subscriptions would be extended by two issues as he had caught you out with two missing Grams (715 and 716). Last friday's gram was addressed as Gram 714 (as was last Thursday's), but when opened I discovered it was actually 715. Only Gram 716 was missed and accordingly I believe a reduction in everyone's subscription by one issue could be justified now as a result. This may not be a popular suggestion with all gramsters so I would prefer to remain, Anon. ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 London Paper Money Fair, September 1, 2002, The Bonnington Hotel, 92 Southhampton Row, London WC1, England, Pam West, P.O.
