This is what I have to share: William Cox, Associate Archivist at the Smithsonian Institute Archives shared with me: "National Zoological Park Bison #2926, purchased from Michael Pablo on October 23, 1897, was the model for a rendering by C. R. Knight which appeared on a $10 note that was issued in 1901. I have found no evidence that the animal was actually named Pablo, but it is reasonable to assume that the head keeper may have called the bull by that name to differentiate him from other bison at the zoo. Michael Pablo was a Montana rancher who became involved in Buffalo conservation during the latter part of the 19th century. Around, 1900, Pablo sold a large herd of bison to the Canadian government which is the basis of the present day bison population in Canada. There is a wildlife refuge named for Pablo in Montana." Additionally, I received a copy of the specimen card on Bison #2926 from the Smithsonian: Specific Name: Bison Americanus Sex: Male Common Name: American Bison Catalogue Number: 2926 Date of receipt: Oct. 23, 1897 Received from: M. Pablo, Ronan, Missoula Co. Montana How Acquired: purchase: ($500) Died: Oct 3, 1914 Remarks: C. R. Knight's drawing for the ten-dollar bill was made from this animal. I wanted to find a copy of Knight's drawing so pursued that avenue. I found a source titled "The Buffalo Book - Full Saga of the American Animal" by David A. Dary, Sage Books, Wallow Press, Ohio University Press. On page 282 of that work: Although William Hornaday claimed that the stub-horn buffalo he killed in Montana and mounted for the Smithsonian was the model for the "Buffalo-bill," Charles R. Knight, the artist, wrote in 1929: "This drawing was done at the Zoological Park in Washington and not from the Museum group. The story of that drawing, however, gives a little light on the idea that it might have been done from the mounted group. A certain Mr. Baldwin, an engraver for the Bureau, was trying to make a drawing from the Museum group when I offered to do this for him. Only too gladly he hustled me over to the Bureau and I was commissioned to do the drawing, which I promptly did-from the Zoo specimen" fn7 Foot Note 7 provides much added detail: "The Bureau (BEP) furnished additional details: 'A wash drawing by Charles R. Knight was the original subject material used in preparing the vignette it for the series 1901 10.00 bill. The note was engraved by G. F. C. Smillie and M. W. Baldwin, who were Bureau employees. However, there is no record of who is credited as being the designer of the note (and) nothing can be found concerning the identity of C. R. Knight' {Letter to author from Micheal L. Plant, October 20, 1971} Poor Charles Knight. In 1915, Frank Baker, superintendent of the National Zoo, wrote that Knight had done the $10 bill drawing from a buffalo in his zoo, but a quarter of a century later Knight had to clarify the matter again. In 1915 Baker could easily refer to Knight as "the well known illustrator" (Smithsonian Annual Report for 1914, 447), but in 1971 the Bureau of Engraving and Printing did not even know who Knight was. For the record, Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953) was an American Painter, illustrator, sculptor, and author, whose biographical facts can be found in many standard encyclopedias.' " In the David Dary work there is a photographic picture of our beloved bison; I am still in search of a copy of the previously mentioned "wash drawing" and am obtaining a book via interlibrary loan to hopefully obtain that. I had previously emailed the BEP wanting to obtain an identifying number for the bison vignette and they responded; "We are not sure by what you mean in regard to an identifying number for the vignette. " (Disappointing to say the least.) On a closing note: maybe we can, through DNA research, identify a descendant of said bison and invite him (her) to the next MPCfest. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Wow, Gramsters never cease to amaze me! Sure Tom Koch’s research above is interesting, well done even. We have come to expect that (from Tom and others). I am struck by the final idea of using modern technology to further our MPC passion. DNA, cool. Bison at the Fest, way out. Tom are you suggesting buffalo burgers?
