From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 724 Date: Sunday, September 08, 2002 12:18 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 724 Sunday 9 Sep 2002 New Variety Reported on NAAFI Token by Philip M. Goldstein confirmed by Larry (I had it all along and didn't know it) Smulczenski In the past few months, I have been on a crusade to locate the last two NAAFI / BAF tokens needed to complete my set. In addition to those two, I also keep my eyes out for the strike/printing varieties previously discussed by Larry. These tokens have varieties such as Coin & Medallion style printings. Coin style means if you were to hold the coin or token at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, and flip the coin/token, the opposite side would read correctly and right side up. (I also call this type of printing/strike as horizontal axis.) This is the style of which United States coinage has been produced Medallion style means if you were to hold the coin/token at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and flip, it would read correctly. (I call this type vertical axis) If you were to hold a Coin style subject at 12 and 6 o'clock, and flip it, it would read upside down, as would a Medallion style subject held at 3 and 9 o'clock. Getting on with the story, as I am collecting the NAAFI tokens by printing/strike variety, and normally a non-numismatist wouldn't understand what I am looking for, I usually just purchase the token and ask questions later. This method paid off for me last night, but not in the way I expected. I received a SB 331 - 1/2 Franc struck/incuse octagonal 1944 NAAFI Token from the UK on Monday from one of my usual sources. This is one of the tougher of the NAAFI tokens to locate. According to WW2 Remembered, there were only 212,570 delivered. Naturally, upon my reviewing the token at home, I checked for orientation, which to my disappointment, was like the previous SB 331's I already owned. Upon closer examination however, I noticed differences in the type styles of the struck lettering. The letter "O" in "ONLY" was round, while on the other tokens I have, the "O" was elongated. There is also a difference in the numeral "2" in 1/2 at the top. I immediately called Larry, to ask him if he was aware of this variety. He said no, so I offered to send him this one to compare. He said hold on, and retrieved several he had. Sure enough, after looking closely, he discovered he had one (what else is new!) but never noticed the differences, but he has confirmed that there are now two distinct strike varieties for the SB 331 token. I had taken to calling this variety as older, as the token which I discovered these varieties on, was generally a bit more worn and aged than my other examples, which were for the most part in like new condition and shiny. Larry informed me his round "O" was like new. Since now I don't really know which came first, I needed a more scientific way of determining. I have written in my WW2 Remembered book, the varieties as: SB 331a - Round "O" SB 331b - Oval "O" I have also added notations to the appropriate page (p173), "h" for Coin and "v" for Medallion styles, i.e., SB 334h or SB 334v The reason I'm using "h" and "v" is that those letters are far enough down the alphabet, so that any other discovered varieties could utilize the letters "c" "d" "e" and so on without interfering with the progression of the letters in alphabetical order up to the letter "h". (I highly doubt there are 8 different varieties of each token, not including strike / printing orientation, so "h" seems like a good letter). Another reason: I cannot remember for love or money, on a moments notice, which way a Coin or Medallion orientation is without either looking in my notes, or looking at my tokens. I hope this information is useful to someone else out there, and hope someone can return the favor, as I also need confirmation of the following: SB 331 (SB 331ah) - Coin style (round "O" - Horizontal axis) SB 331 (SB 331bh) - Coin style (oval "O" - Horizontal axis) SB 332 (SB 332v) - Medallion style (Vertical Axis) (SB 332v) ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Twice in the past week I found notes in my “dupes” that were not duplicates at all. One was a multiple printing replacement that I was preparing to sell to someone but decided that I had better compare it to the one in my collection and low and behold I did not have one at all. The second case was similar to the first except that I did have one in my collection, but it in fact was not as nice as the one that I was selling. You can be sure that I fixed both situations promptly. However, that is not the real point. Neil Shafer has said many times that in paper money there are no duplicates. By that he means that every notes is interesting in its own right and often a “duplicate” holds some special promise. Well, said, Neil. Fred ============================================== Mail Call Dear Fred, On Lyn Knight's (August 23rd) Auction. I bid and got the 641 Series (XF) REPLACEMENT (1st Printing) note. Serial # J00708283 (Position 39) In your new book (which is great, by the way) you list this note at $1,100.00 - I paid $450.00 Did I get a good deal or what ! But now I wonder why I was the only one bidding on this note? Do you know something I don't. ? Gary H. Hi Fred, No reports from London (which can be deleted from the show schedule by the way)? WW II Remembered second edition? What is the game plan?
