From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 725 Date: Monday, September 09, 2002 6:57 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 725 Monday 10 Sep 2002 Summer Seminar By Fred Schwan At the ANA summer seminar in July, Warner Talso and I cooked up the idea to have an advanced class next year in addition to the regular class. I think that most of the idea was Warner’s, but together we brainstormed the thing then presented it to Joe Boling and Gail Baker. Both of them liked the idea. Now is the time to develop the plan. Gail will publish the schedule for the 2003 seminar soon, we can/should develop the idea now. The basic idea is that the advanced class will be concurrent with the regular class. It will be run something like a graduate class. Students will have tailored activities to be completed during the week. Schwan and Boling (and possibly others too) will guide the advanced students, but not generally teach them. Because of the low instructor load, it will be possible to have a class with only a few students and I do not think that it will be difficult to recruit those. The low load of course is from the point of view of the ANA administration. From the point of view of Boling and Schwan, the load goes up substantially! To be a student in the advanced class, a student must have completed the regular class or have permission of the instructors. The combined groups will participate in some activities such as reenactments (pay, conversion etc). They may join for some class sessions as well. In my vision one required assignment of the advanced students will be to make a presentation to the basic class on a subject of special interest or expertise. Alternatively, the advanced student could teach a mini seminar or give a seminar wide bull session on some topic. I am going on the schedule to conduct a mini seminar on MPC during the week when the military seminars are not in session. A similar mini seminar might be held during the week of the military seminar. I would expect each student to write an article (or more than one) for publication in the MPCGram or a print publication. I would also plan to teach each advanced student how to publish the Gram (the mechanics). What are your thoughts on this? We need to work fast to get the concept together. Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, I like your remarks and those of Niel Shafer about there not being any duplicates in a paper money collection. Someone needs to explain to my wife why I consider all three thousand plus of a particular Vietnamese note as singles for my research. This 5 Dong note was the most common issued in the South (Nam Bo) during the French Indochina War, and my current spreadsheet database shows there were a maximum of 100 million numbers for possible use. This would mean 500 million Dong in the poor farming communities in the "liberated" zones. No wonder there were reports of inflation in these zones, and this was only one of many notes that were issued! I received an email from "Kevinn517@hotmail.com" and it was returned as undeliverable.
