From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 726 Date: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 6:55 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 726 Tuesday 11 Sep 2002 Planchettes again By Joe Boling My genuine example of Germany 1948 DM100 (ABNC, SB658a) has at least a few planchettes with silk threads in them. This is the first time I have observed this feature. My original tickler for this column was translucent planchettes. Now I see that the ones that appear translucent are actually (apparently) transparent, or nearly so, but with red threads in them, so that they appear faintly pinkish when buried but show the threads when near the surface. I don't have any of the other ABNC-printed notes of the series (SB655-57). Would someone who owns those please check the planchettes? It is not easy to see the threads, because only a planchette lying on or near the surface of the paper will reveal them. Planchettes that are buried are too far below the surface to show the threads clearly. Also, it may be that not every planchette will have the threads (or enough of them to be seen). I went through the other German pieces that I have in that series, printed by Tudor (DM2, DM5, and DM20), and all have solid red or blue planchettes. I was able to find examples of surface-lying planchettes that had been dislodged but not knocked clear off the note, so I could carefully flip the planchettes over and see both sides (one side printed, the other not). In each case the planchettes were solid colored paper without any visible inclusions. Now, get those UV lamps out. There are yellow planchettes in the ABNC note cited above that are invisible to the naked eye. I searched through my Chinese ABNC notes, and found the same yellow planchettes in the ubiquitous P117n, except that in a strictly UNC note, those yellow planchettes lying on the surface ARE visible to the naked eye. Back to Germany--the ABNC notes show no other UV-reactive features, but the Tudor notes have UV-reactive tints (face only) and serials (but not planchettes). To summarize--my ABNC 1948 DM100 note has yellow planchettes visible only under UV light and reddish planchettes that are actually transparent with red threads (the blue planchettes appear to be solid). What do the rest of you have? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Some days everything seems to go wrong. I have had more than my share of those lately, but hen I get cheered by some contribution to the Gram. We have two good letters about the ANA Seminar advanced class that we will use tomorrow to finalize the discussion on that topic. If you have something to say on that, please get it in soon! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, I have letters from the Washington Zoo and the Smithsonian that clearly state the bison was named "Pablo." The designer of the $10 US note with Pablo is Ostrander Smith (1873-1933). He was engaged at the BEP from 1887-1902. (The Engraver's Line, p. 294) Marcus Baldwin, the engraver of Pablo and Charles R. Knight, the artist, used both the Hornaday specimen in the Smithsonian and the live Pablo who was at the zoo. However, from what I found, the live animal was the true inspiration. Unless you read the article and related ones, you would not know that the original $10 note had the battleship Massachusetts as the central vignette.
