I received several responses which will be used here instead of the mail section. First from Warner Talso. “I read with interest your article on the Advance Class at the Summer Seminar. Two immediate thoughts. One, would it be first or second week? There are some logistical differences. Second, let's firm up the plan to present a short class at the Colorado Coin Show and GET IT INCLUDED IN THE ADVERTISING. Pardon me for shouting, but I feel strongly, if we are going to make the effort to support the coin show, the least they could do is publicize it.” It is possible that the military seminar will be moved to the second week. Two participants have made a special request to that effect. Actually, there are quite a few factors involved in such a simple decision. I am not sure, but Gail will be making the final decision on this soon. Warner’s point about promoting events is very appropriate. Far too often in numismatics we do the hard part of creating something, but do not do the small things (like getting the word OUT) well. Just the combination of things that we have revolving around the military seminar make it somewhat complex. Of course coordination is easier said than done. There is no super power responsible for all of the activities with the ability and power to effect or coordinate all desired activities. Of course such problems are common with volunteer organizations. In our case we have organizations that are not even organizations! Nonetheless, we must try harder to bring I all together. A small imbedded point to Warner’s letter is that the weekend coin show of the Colorado Springs Coin Club is an additional resource. For example, a presentation there could qualify as one of the presentations required of the graduate students. Essentially, that is what Warner did last year. Heck, in some ways Warner was the first graduate student having attended both seminars. David Klinger wrote: “I have been going to the ANA summer seminars for the last 11 years, and I think you have a very good idea in your proposal for a "graduate" version of the Military Numismatics course. I think the version you and Warner came up with (re: GRAM 725) is just right, as you have stated it. Gail Baker will give you all the help necessary to make it work. And, add me to the list of helpers.” I think that most if not all of you know that if you volunteer, that I will take advantage of the resource. Dave do you have any special things in mind. Possibly you could spend some time with the graduate students (I like the ring of that) on advanced internet research! I would like to attend that one. Harold Kroll wrote that he supports the idea whole heartedly. He proves that in the most powerful way. Harold says that he will attend as a graduate student. He also points out that the military scholarships should be awarded much earlier so that people can make work and travel plans. This last point reinforces Warner’s point of the need for coordination. Well, can we consider this a consensus? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Many of you have noticed, but few mentioned (thank you) that among the many things that I mess up is the date on the Gram. You would think that it is an easy thing to know the date. Well, I am up to my ankles in calendars that I have had stuck to the computer monitor, printer, telephone, window (transparent glass NOT Microsoft product), pencil sharpener, and assorted other places. I just cannot keep on handy. However, there is not way that I can not get today right (even though I also listed yesterday as Sep 11, gad). This being one of those days burned into memory forever, it should allow me to use it as a mark to at least get the next few days right. I have a UV lamp for stamps to show Phosphor tagged stamps and it doesn't appear to do anything with MPC or AMC. I can tell you that the U.S. "Buffalo Nickel" 1913-38 model for the "Buffalo Nickel" is named "Black Diamond" (his head is mounted on a wall, with actual pictures). The interesting story and pictures can be founds on page 23. The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickel, by David Lange (2000 ed.). This Buffalo , I thought was the same one??? Stamp - coin - and MPC??? Can any one to enlighten us further?? Otherwise I will dig into it. Guy Araby! Dear Guy, I am shocked, but I am not sure what shocks me more: 1) that anyone could possibly write an entire numismatic book on as narrow and obscure subject as buffalo nickels, 2) that an MPC guy would have such a book, or 3) that having such a book that he would admit to it.
