From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 728 Date: Thursday, September 12, 2002 5:09 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 728 Thursday 12 Sep 2002 ANA Summer Seminar Military Courses By Gail Baker, ANA Director of Education The Military Numismatics class held for the last two years at the ANA Summer Seminar has been one of our most successful classes thanks to the enthusiasm and innovative teaching methods of the instructors, Joe Boling and Fred Schwan. Students learn through a variety of student-center activities including reenactments of military pay with "Fest" money, money conversion, supply sales, etc. It was so much fun that I made myself a nuisance visiting the class so I could keep up on the happenings and make sure I got my souvenirs (and hugs). Fred and Joe are real gems and have made themselves an indispensable part of Seminar. I'm pleased to consider them valuable teachers -- but more importantly, my friends. Some of the comments from the students in this year's class include: "Not only did I learn a lot, I had a lot of fun." "The depth and range of their knowledge" (what I liked best about the instructors) "I enjoyed both the presentation of the very unusual material and the manner in which both instructors presented that material" "I learned a lot. Great stories from the instructors." "I learned much more than I expected about military numismatics. Also, the material displayed was amazing. Many one of a kind items." "The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable about the subject matter. Easy to understand what was explained. Plenty of presentation material. Open to questioning." "The enthusiasm of the instructors was infectious and got everyone excited and keen on the adventures of collecting. The instructors were more than willing to share information that is otherwise unavailable. Extremely clever teaching methods." "This is one of the best classes I have ever taken and I am not at all surprised by the rave reviews from the prior seminars." (This person has attended Seminar every year for the past 9 years!) For the 2003 Seminar class we have decided to expand the offerings to include a "graduate seminar" style advanced class on Military Numismatics which will run concurrently with the basic class. The classes will be held in adjacent rooms with the basic room large enough for the students to come together for certain sessions and activities. Joe and Fred will teach the basic class and guide the advanced students through their individual projects. Guest instructors and students will be encouraged to share their areas of expertise with the classes. The tentative course catalog for 2003 is partially on the ANA web site (www.money.org) and is updated as information becomes available. A deposit of $100 will hold your spot in either of the two Military Numismatics classes. My thanks to Joe, Fred and all of the great students that have taken the Military Numismatics class for making an indelible impression on me -- and on Seminar. Next summer, I want to meet all of you reading this issue of the Gram! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Ski has a nice article in preparation for Thurski, but he has it with him in an automobile somewhere in Pennsylvania enroute to Strasburg. We planned to capture that column for publication late tonight after I arrived there. When Colorado Springs VIP Gail Baker’s article above came in, it was obvious that there was a better solution. We are very pleased to present this item by our seminar leader even if it reads a bit much like an advertisement for Joe and me. However, we can count on Howard and PK to keep any egos in check. Expect Ski’s column tomorrow and probably a preliminary report on Strasburg. You guys and gals are the greatest. I mentioned a few weeks ago how well submissions were coming in and that was true. The in box was getting a little empty and I was starting to worry, especially because I was going on the road and need more help in that circumstance. Anyway, lots of good stuff has started coming in again. That is wonderful for the obvious reason that it will help fill Gram, but I like it even more for another reason. I hate whining about not receiving material. I much prefer doling out praise and thereby reinforcing the appropriate behavior. The Gram is by of and for you. Only your submissions keep it going. Thank you so much for you continued support of the Gram and we look forward (especially in the next two weeks) to your article, letter, question, complaint. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, Just a short note of interest...a lady was seeking info. on a batch of foreign notes she had acquired from her father. She was referenced to me by an associate. The notes were mainly WWII era notes....all fairly common. However....she also had several ORIGINAL photos that her dad shot during the war (Europe). Apparently, he was with an Engineering Btn. and built several temporary bridges (pontoon?) use to span rivers where the normal bridges had been destroyed. Several pictures were interesting (bridges and a crashed German Stuka)...however....there was one that I thought was special. It showed several officers examining a "temp." bridge and lo and behold one officer was easily identified. Yep....Old Blood n' Guts himself....Gen. Patton!! She recogized who was in the picture and she is planning on making copies to sell.....She also has "other" photos she promised to let me look at......Is this of interest to anyone? PK6 Dear Editor, Please tell Philip and Larry that I have both SB332h and v in my collection. I also have SB346 (with the "stops" in the circular scroll around the winged NAAFI badge) that has a skewed back. If the front, w/badge, is vertical and the token is rotated around the vertical axis the written subscription on the back has an orientation from 09.00 (top) to 03.00 (bottom). I have some spare tokens SB332v/4h/4v/7-w/stops, and I am looking for SB346 without the "stops". Also the tea token and Sudan (I can dream). Contact me at "amcpapermoneyman@aol.com". Regards, Andrew M. Clark. Dear (?) Editor, PK6 has just enlightened me with his short letter to the editor that Fred Schwan is the editor of this fine newsletter. And I thought I was writing to a real editor! I have to come up with another adjective for the editor, and we need to lower the subscription rate so he does not make so much money from working a couple of minutes a day. What a racket! This is my last morning (9/11) in ole Saigon for this trip and am leaving tonight for Narita, where I will stay one day and night and try to find one or more coin and stamp stores in that city. Then I fly out on Friday the 13th for the U.S. Am I a glutton for risk? Yes, I am crazy too. There have been some disappointments here in finding only a few items on my want list, but I have found quite a bit for other folks. I am also bringing that MPC Collection back for a Gramster, so it was not be a bad trip after all. I also wrote and completed three Southeast Asia columns for World Coin News, and each includes some military, so be looking for them in the near future. I will also be writing many small articles and items for other pubs with what I found. That is all for now. I have to get back to my house before the daily morning monsoon soaks me again. I wish I had some clothes that quickly dried like the old jungle fatigues! Howard (Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com) Howard A.
