The news of the second/graduate course is an important boost to the program. We should be able to use this to make the 2003-2003 scholarship drive the best ever. Basically without any official effort, the fund has received donations from the following individuals. 2003 Scholarship Donors Ed Hoffman RA Medina Dick Freyser Larry Smulczenski David Seelye Howard Daniel Steve Feller Donations of cash and numismatic material will be gladly accepted. Generally the numismatic material is auctioned at MPCFest, but might be sold via ebay or other places. Your scholarship donations help the hobby by sending qualified individuals to the ANA summer seminar military money class. Except for unavoidable charges like ebay fees, 100% of your donation goes to scholarships. With the cooperation of the Gram staff (grin) a notice about the scholarship fund will appear in very issue of the Gram until next year's seminar. At this moment, Ski and I are enroute to Washington where we hope/expect to be able to do some MPC research. Of course you will hear all about that, but for a few days it will be difficult to get the Gram out. Thank you for your indulgence. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor: I'd like to believe that I have my finger on the pulse of the paper money market. Not only the actual nuances in price fluctuations--which, to many, defines "market"--but, more importantly on the peripheral activities--which, in fact, are truly central to the hobby. Consequently, I'm at least marginally aware of most clubs' activities, newsletters, awards, etc. Nowhere else, in the realm of paper money collecting, does such an enthusiastic, in depth, scholarly, and jovial "activity" exist as the MPCGram. No wonder you reap such benefits from military numismatics! I'll be the first to admit that much of the information in the Grams is above my head. Still, I enjoy clawing through the anecdotal observations, jabs in good jest, and downright scientific deductions which appear on my monitor daily. The only problem I can envision: if enough (nonmilitary) collectors becomes privy to the Gram, you'll open up a whole new world to them through education. After a few get hooked, you might find even greater competition for your cherished notes! Speaking of which: the $10 series 472 (position 23; serial number C11377242C) with the huge faulty alignment error on the back, that I had at Memphis, will soon assume residence in an advanced collection. The face is more-or-less perfectly centered. While the back shift is severe enough to eliminate the parallel lines forming the design frame and leave an enormous unprinted top margin. Due to the severity of the misalignment, one would expect that a part of an adjacent note would be visible...unless this is printed from the top of the sheet. Enjoy your Gram...you're in an enviable position! Regards, Frederick J. Bart Dear Fred, Thank you very much for your nice comments. We are happy to have you as a subscriber. We look forward to more information on the error you describe. [Readers, Fred Bart is the author of the Comprehensive Catalog of U. S. Paper Money Errors and as such one of the greatest authorities on error notes. His book includes MPC and belongs in the library of any serious MPC collector.] Editor Dear Dick [Freyser], Congratulations on such a wonderful find! I am dumbfounded at how many items have been found in the last year or two that were not supposed to exist: The 481 4th printing $5 by Dick, the 2nd printing 472 50 cent by Harold, the anomaly on the 541 quarter by Doug. These items were simply not supposed to exist, either buy virtue of the manufacturing process or by contradiction of official documentation. The new discoveries keep continuing to surface. Keep up the great work!
