I had been collecting coins, US large size notes, and fractional currency off and on during the past 25 years. My recent interest in military currencies has grown based on the knowledge and support of a number of MPC collectors and dealers that have crossed my path in the last couple of years. Back in 2001, I received an invitation to travel to the "frozen tundra of Port Clinton, Ohio" in February to attend a 3 day gathering of MPC collectors called the "Fest." On the one hand, it sounded like a great way to meet some the people face to face that I had only had email contact with. On the other hand, I thought, you have to be out of your mind! Spending 3 days in a town which probably thinks the meaning of "night life" is having a pulse while asleep, I wondered what could possibly fill all that time? Well, I must say It was a wonderful experience. Many of the attendees, for the enjoyment of all us, offered their own time and at their own expense, created souvenirs, displays, reenactments of conversion day, we had a mini bourse, it was great fun. I have attended a few other MPC Fest events since and see many of the same people working to make it a success. I appreciate all they have done to make these events enjoyable and informative. This brings me to the reason for this letter. I am working on putting a "Less-than" comprehensive catalog of Military Fest Certificates together. Since Fest I in Feb. 2000, their have been 12 different varieties of MFC, 4 training issues, MFC Coupons, chits, etc. Within these issues are counterfeits, uniface notes, double denominations, inverted backs, replacements, voided notes, specimens...you get the idea. I am asking all gramsters that have attended any of the Fest events where you were presented MFC, to list what issue it is along with the serial number and position number of every note in your possession. If you are in possession of an error of any kind please note that on your list. It is my plan to update this list on a constant basis, so as new issues are released, numbers will need to be recorded. The catalog will have scans of all of the series, as well as a listing of all varieties within a particular series. For those of you with Fest I notes, please make note of the number of cancellations on the back of the note. I need this information as soon as possible. I am preparing this on Monday night before we (Ski and I) go to the BEP on Tuesday for MPC research. We are excited of course. We hope to solve the riddle of the apparent fourth printing Series 481 $5 note recently discovered and discussed here. I thought that good research and journalism (??) called for a theory BEFORE we go look for the answer. First, let me say that Ski and I researched this rather thoroughly over the past few years. We really thought that we had it all and had it right. Of course now we are in doubt. The theory that I have developed is that a fourth printing of $5 certificates might have been ordered after the initial order (for fourth printing notes), but before the shipping of the other denominations of the fourth printing. This would account for the documents being separated. If all of this happened, it is altogether possible that the documents are lost forever. Furthermore, if $5 notes were ordered late for the fourth printing, it is equally possible that $10 denominations were also ordered. I hope that we can solve the riddles at the BEP, but I am far from certain. Finally, a short note on Al’s story above. Believe it or not, a book is in preparation on MPC and MPC Fest Souvenirs. Harold Kroll, David Seelye and some others have been working on it. Looks like there is another worker for that project. I hope that David and Harold will comment on this soon. The Graduate Course needs to be advertised as a participatory one. Fred has already outlined some expectations. Obviously the ANA Library is the most significant resource. However, there are other needs. To accomplish and record research I envision bringing a lap top computer. I have heard that, in ancient times, people transcribed information on to paper with something called a "pencil". Hard to image. I consider that a myth that ranks along side the Easter Bunny. Perhaps I could even surf the net if Joe will give up some evening time on the telephone line :-) I know the ANA HQ has a scanner. Do they have computers in the library? We know the Colorado College has computer rooms. My point is that resources are part of the package - both those available at the Seminar and what Graduate Students should consider bringing. Further, if I am going to borrow a laptop from the Labs, why not borrow a computer projector. Do you see a role for a computer projector at the Seminar or it that going to far?
