From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 736 Date: Monday, September 23, 2002 7:56 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 736 Monday 23 Sep 2002 BAFSV "update" by A Clark TFA van Elmpt's book on BAFSVs (1994) makes one reference to the 2nd Series £1 BAFSV (S/B 427b, PM22b). On page 71 he says that the £1 voucher was NOT printed on watermarked paper. The latest edition of "Pick", volume 2 recognizes the existence of the voucher, but places no value on any of the grades. The voucher does exist, but how many were printed and what is the serial band within which the printing occurred? Before I address this issue I have some background information. In 1991 the MoD auctioned the entire remaining stock of BAFSVs as one lot of more than 17 million vouchers secured in 352 boxes; a total weight of 14 tons. The boxes were secured to the standard one would expect of bank notes. The lot was purchased by a consortium of dealers, one of whom decided that here was an opportunity to put together a set of vouchers with suited (common) serial numbers from the first 1,000 and last 1,000 of notes in each cypher run. 352 boxes, a few broken tools and a lot of patience later they were rewarded with a 1,000 groups of 12 vouchers with serial number 000*** and 11 vouchers with serial number 999***. These groups of 23 vouchers were initially priced with a very high premium, and some were actually sold. More recently they remainder have come on the market at a much more reasonable price and group 707 now resides in my collection. The 2nd Series £1 BAFSV has ten cyphers running from AA/1 to AA/10. AA/10 000707 (S/B 427a, PM22a) is in my group. AA/10 999707 is NOT in my group. Either the dealer was not as determined as he thought he was or the voucher was not in the lot when sold. The MoD appear to have issued the vouchers sequentially so a reasonable assumption is that the print run for the 2nd Series £1 BAFSV stopped before AA/10 999000. I have seen AA/10 146890 and it is printed on paper containing a security thread. I have AA/10 780199 and AA/10 872569, both printed on watermarked paper (S/B 427b, PM22b). All AA/10 vouchers that I have seen, and I have seen more than those listed here, have graded Unc. Has any MPCGram reader seen the thread version with a serial number higher than 146890? Has any MPCGram reader seen watermark version with a serial number below 780199 or above 872569? If so, what are the numbers? The grapevine informs me that TFA van Elmpt is preparing a second edition of his book so he may already have these answers; but then again he may not. What value should a collector place on this voucher? I know of only two UK dealers who have included them in their lists and the price swung from too cheap (in my opinion) to "wow, I'm rich." I suggest that many of these vouchers escaped into the trade/collector market before their existence was detected. Next time you see AA/10 take a close look. If it is on watermarked paper and priced as threaded version contain your excitement until after you have bought (received, and examined) it. I'll collate responses and update MPCGram readers as information comes in. Theo is a Gramster (although we have not heard from him in awhile). Hopefully, Theo will solicit suggestions from Gramsters and also share some of the discoveries here as he prepares any new edition. We consider such research one of the most powerful features of the Gram. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Hello Larry Gibbs and all gramsters! In response to your UV light questions. A standard black works great!! (actually much better, produces much more light than the hand held version for stamps!) Turn off all surrounding lights! As they counteract the objective. Then turn on the black light (Lighthouse /Leuchtturm, makes a portable version for stamps and related items REF:L80!!!!,a German named product now made in China! for about $25+-) Pull out your MPC!! Start with the XF and better notes. Series #651 all denominations are SENSITIVE to UV light!! Yes ALL! They are the most dramatic. The "other" series remain a dull lavender/white, but exhibit a wonderful way to "see" the beauty of the "hidden colors". Most of the #692 5 and 10 cent notes are sensitive too! And many of the #641 fractionals! These note (paper) look "electric/ neon white!" All the serial numbers are RED under the light, instead of black. EXCEPTIONS!! I found that the "SECOND printing only" of series #481 STAY BLACK! AND THE SECOND PRINTINGS of #691/#701 stay Black also!! the only exceptions!! Other notes I have found have varying degrees of white paper. Both Long and Short wave light have a similar effect. But a good old Black light works best! There are many paper varieties still to be discovered. I found a series #461 $10 with full UV sensitivity!! I believe it to be rare. My research has only been conducted on several hundred CU notes. I am not sure how a circulated notes will hold up! Also the second printings of series #691/#701 are distinguished by a UV treated serial numbers (BUT STAY BLACK) and also exhibit a completely different appearance all together than the first printing, which the first printing serial numbers are RED under UV!! This series, 691 first and second printing, have a dramatic difference altogether when compared under Black light!! very beautiful!! . There are many more sensitive papers in the 600 series! One day I will record all I have located!!
