I will try to attend and grill the folks there about this topic. I recently acquired an example of the WWII OPA ration book #1. I have had many examples of books 3 and 4 over the years, mostly with at least a few of the paper "ration stamps" still bound into them (or sometimes laid in, having been detached but not used). Both of those (#3 and #4) are booklets with a stapled binding. This book #1 is completely different. It is a folded sheet of paper, with the ration stamps printed on the edges and needing to be cut away with scissors for use. Is this the standard form for book #1, or do I have some sort of supplemental book, replacement, or whatever? (Yes, I know--look it up in the Ration Token Society's massive tome on the WWII ration system. It's easier to ask you guys, and I'm very short of time this month.) There may not be any column from me for two weeks. I depart for the London IBNS meeting next Monday at the crack of dawn, and don't return until the following Monday very late. I stay at the Victory Services Club in London, which has no accommodation for internet access (no phones in the rooms, let alone phones with modular jacks, and no phones in the common areas). (I was in a Reno hotel this summer for an Itazuke reunion--the phones were hard-wired to the walls. Management did not want guests holed up in their rooms playing with the internet--they wanted them downstairs dumping $$$ into their games. Not me.) Sorry this submission is so spare--I need to get a nap before heading to Puyallup to take out the PNNA exhibit (installed there for seventeen days every fall). ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Say it ain’t so, Joe! Fortuitously, there is a large Internet Café quite near the show venue. Not only do we hope for a report to fill the void that Joe could create on Tuesday, we want to have some reports from London. I attended the IBNS event for the past two years and expect to go back next year, but cannot make it this year. Joe, if you cannot send some reports, recruit someone there who can! Heck, please recruit some regular correspondents from that part of the world. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, I have come across two notes from series 641 $5.00 & $10.00 with some graffiti on the face, it appears to be someone's initials. They are fairly legible, and seem to be LR 21 the other initials look like GJS and 21 OCT 68. My question is, are these legit, or some sort of scam to make these common notes a little less common? I have looked in the book, but have found nothing on these. So what gives? Any info on these? Thanks. Just click on "UV light" and select "Mini UV Pocket Light." It's called a "money detector." I'm sure there are many better ones - but none cheaper, that I know of. There is a minimum order of $15.00 on this site, so you may want to do what I did- order 5 and share them with friends - still less than $20.00 total.
