From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 739 Date: Saturday, September 28, 2002 9:02 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 739 Satunday 28 Sep 2002 Asian Trip Report—Part I By Mike Cummings Just writing to let you know how this trip to Korea and Japan is going. As far as MPC/AMC, not a whole lot to report other than there is hardly anything available. I had to stop in Japan on this trip first for two days and then go to Korea for two days. I am now back in Japan for a few days before heading home. NOTE KOREAN MPC Coupons: In Korea not even one piece available this time. I did pick up a few just released 2003 Korean Catalogs and they have now pictured (correctly I think) all of the KMPC (which is what I call them). All notes in color except the very rare ones. No prices of course. One of my main goals for this trip was to buy some "B" 1000 Yens (even one piece if possible) but there are none available. This note is so scarce that probably only one or two surface in a year's time. And those are usually D-D or E-E letters. Whoever got Joe's collection was very lucky indeed. On the brighter side I did manage to sell (2) two 651 Fifty Cents notes yesterday to a dealer who bought my complete personal collection more than 20 years ago. It is still intact, and of course I am trying to buy it back RIGHT NOW!. The centerpiece of this collection is a very nice AU/UNC 541 $5.00. It also contains other high grade key notes, Series 521 $5.00 and $10.00 notes in CH UNC to name two. By the way the above mentioned 651 Fifty-Cents Notes are the last that I have from that hoard of 111 pieces which were auctioned a couple months back by CAA. I bought several pieces from a dealer who bought them from that auction. The only one I have now is the one currently running on eBay for $325.00 BUY IT NOW) and I might add it is a bargain! No this is not a plug, just trying to make the point that soon all these notes (all 111 of them will be gone)! Will more surface? Who knows, but my guess is there are far fewer of these than the un-released Series 691 and 701 series notes which are in waiting to be put on the market in the future. And who listed these notes (651 50's) in the Green Sheet at only $100.00? Seems cheap for notes that are trading at $3-400.00. By the way the two I sold in Japan went for $320.00 each. Also, the Japanese dealer who bought the two 651 50-Cent notes also wants an entire set of the 651 fractionals in UNC. I am paying in the $1800-2000 range if there is one out there. I notice there is a complete set including the $5/10 notes for $2500.00 right now on eBay. Re the new 4th Edition MPC book by Schwan: Gave a couple away this trip and they were extremely happy to receive it. My hunch is some day Fred is gonna be FAMOUS all over the world! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Boy the time sure sneaks by. We have missed more grams in the past week than any similar period in a very long time. There is no good reason for this. There certainly is plenty of news out there and lots of views too. I am busy, but no more than normal and I think that I am getting younger each day so I am uncertain of the problem except possibly my perspective! I hope that you are having a nice weekend, and I hope to do better with the publishing schedule next week. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Hello Gramsters!!! Show report Long Beach Calif. Sept. 26-29!!!!!!! Well I bought a GEM CU #591 $5 and 23 other decent notes! In Gem/Choice CU including replacements! Ran out of money!!!!!!! Wasn't expecting a "Key" at all?? Wow!!!!!! What a show!!!!!!!! First a pick of a great collection! West coast rules!!!!!!(this week!) (((P.S. don't ask NFS!!)) ... Too bad "David" (didn't set up!)!!!!! ha ha ! Guy! In reply to Jack Hunter: I have come highly suspect of those 641 $5 and $10 notes with the LR 21 GJS 21OCT68 writing, and these notes are being offered as "Verified Count Notes" These notes all seem to have come out and appear on the market within the last year or so, and there appears to be a steady supply. The fact that the date is written military style, does entice one to believe it indeed a member of the military that did the count. These notes are claimed to be Verified Count Notes, which I would take that to mean as a bundle/stack/group was counted, it was verified by someone, either an MBF Teller or a Finance Corps representitive at the least. In which case, there is no amount written on the notes concerning the number of notes counted: 50, 100 or another number which would reflect the total number of notes counted for that batch, bundle or what have you. But in all cases just that we have seen, only: "LR 21" in black ball point, and "GJS 21OCT68" red ball point has been seen. Another factor that makes me wonder: the date used is a conversion date: 21OCT68 was when Series 641 was withdrawn, and 661 issued. That would be correct for a conversion day, but I stop and wonder how many notes had to be turned in for conversion. Does that mean they had the time to count and verify how many hundreds of these notes immediately after conversion? It would be ok for a small unit to convert and count on same day, but don't think they would have had such time for a large base, which is where they would bring large amounts of converted MPC to be counted. Anything is possible, but I wonder if it all could have been done on the same day of conversion, since we have not seen any of these notes with any other day written on them. In my opinion, I would not go and affix any substantial premium ($5-$10 over and above the value of note in offered grade) to any of these Verified Count notes, until substantial proof surfaces validating the authenticity of the writing.
