From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 742 Date: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 7:40 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 742 Wednesday Oct 2, 2002 Serial Number 2 MPC on Ebay By Shipbright (seller of #2 note, forwarded by David Seelye) I knew that it was valuable from talking to local collectors and had a feeling that it would be worth a couple of thousand or more. I purchased the bill in 1980 from my neighbor back east who brought it back from Vietnam [sic]in 1968 after his tour in the Navy. The low serial number caught my eye and I knew it would be valuable someday. From what I understand the bills are so rare because the military personnel were required to turn in all their MPCs to be converted to US dollars and consequently there were not many in circulation. There was also a story about a prostitute in Vietnam [sic] who had acquired quite a collection of these bills from her military patrons. Can you tell me more about the history of these bills? A Bidder’s Story By Mike Cummings I just walked into the office(a looong day)...could not believe what that note brought! It was funny, while in Herb's office this morning I was bidding on it (I had already left an esnipe bid for $500--haha!) Anyway, I kept bidding and Seeyle jumped in, I bid, he bid, then I bid, etc., etc. When it got to $1850.00 I told Herb, hell, I better figure out what this note is really worth. Herb said, oh just buy it! So I decided that $1850 was probably all it was worth! Then before I left the airport, bammm! it went up to like $2350 with Harold the high bidder! I could not believe it. It is funny, but before I departed I started to leave another esnipe bid for like $4500! Anyway that seller out in San Diego (with like 58 feedback) must be extremely happy and thinking, duh, I better get into this MPC stuff some more.......... Now a question WHAT'S IT WORTH? If it was 00000001, would it be worth anymore? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Not since he liberation of MPC Series 691 and 701 has one subject dominated the conversation—and the Gram—as much as this number two note. It was interesting (and exciting too). It brings up research, collecting, business, and practical questions. There is still time for you to weigh in with your comments/feelings. More letters will be run tomorrow, then we will try to move on to some other things. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, I read the President's column on page 314 of this latest issue of PAPER MONEY. Your course about MILITARY CURRENCY sounded interesting and I might be interested in starting such a collection. Where can I find out more about this? Who could sell me a starter collection? Any comments or advice. US currency is getting too expensive these days to add rare pieces. Thanks for any thoughts or advice. Laurence Brody SPMC Member Hello Laurence, Thank you for writing and welcome! I have put your name on the subscription list for MPCGram. If you have not started receiving this by Thur, please write again. If I may be so bold, I suggest that there are two books that you need to start with: World War II Remembered and Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates ($65 and $50 respectively, $4 shipping (per ORDER)). Starting from scratch, it might be a good idea to buy a starter set. I suspect that you mean of MPC as opposed to the many other possibilities, but that is why I suggest the books first. After that, check out the advertising in those books and in your daily Gram. It is ironic that you are coming to military money out of frustration over prices in "US" paper money at a particular time when we are talking alot about a high price here in the Gram. That is NOT a normal situation! Finally, I cannot help but note that you came our way because of the kind words written by Frank Clark in Paper Money. Frank attended the ANA summer seminar on a scholarship created by Gramsters. Your letter is proof that the system works! Write again if I can be of assistance. Fred Hi, Link did not work. Try this one: http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=1383795194 Neat note!!!! Congrats to dave nick Dear Gram, Woooooooooo!!!!!!I'm I glad the note wasn't CU (what I collect) and had to "battle" for that lil' sleeper!! (the Series 651 $5 A00000002A) ebay #1383795194 $3777! And make sure to "UV CHECK the serieal numbers, "ALL" for alterations! Should be all "dark" red under black light! AND this issue is unique in being "highly sensitive" to UV light (I.E. "PAPER" = HI-BRITE!) The brightest series under UV examination. Poor Fred!! $25 bucks away!!!! David the "sniper!" along with all the other fanatics!! Oh no!! What a show!!!! Makes collecting MPC so FUN!!!!!!! Guy! Dear Gram, I do not know if this is good news or bad news, but I know a sure fire way to increase attendance at MPC Fest! Gramsters (and Festers/future Festers) must discontinue eating restaurant French fries (and similar items) and potato chips (and similar items). While this has always been a good idea, it is now an imperative. Here is a link for more information. http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/conditions/09/29/fries.cancer.ap/index.html I have reviewed the literature and while there is a slight chance that future research will change this assessment, it simply is not worth the risk. Stop now! C. Tolek, MD Fest Surgeon PS I am working on that plan that you asked about for physical exams, stress tests, and digital exams for the Fest. Dear Gram, Say, what is that 651 $5.00 Note on eBay with SN A00000002A worth? Seeyle just ran it up to $1825.00. I was gonna buy it but I think that price is plenty, right?
