Plan ahead to attend the PHILIPPINE COLLECTOR'S FORUM (PCF as it will be known) next summer. This is the preliminary information we have at this time. We have already coordinated with the American Numismatic Association for their approval, and we have tentatively scheduled Friday afternoon, 1 August 2003 for a gathering of Philippine collectors. This will be during the largest ANA convention of the year which will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. (I had already planned to have a table at the convention and display some of my personal Philippine collection.) The purpose of the PCF gathering is educational and to give us a chance to get to meet one another and see and learn about new aspects of Philippine Numismatics. To that end I have already contacted and have agreement from famous numismatist and author, Neil Shafer, and collector John Grost who co-authored the "Numismatic Aspects of Leprosy", to speak at the PCF. John Wilson, ANA President will be there to welcome Philippine collectors to the PCF. I also expect we will have "show and tell" by individual collectors as well as door prizes and other surprises. Fellow Philippine Numismatist, Ken Seymore (seymorekf@hotmail.com) is helping plan and coordinate the PCF. Since we are in the early stages of planning this event, we would appreciate input from any of you. We are also looking for other speakers. Please contact Ken or myself if you have ideas. I believe it will be a great time for all! 2. Philippine Mailbid IV. I am currently receiving consignments for the upcoming sale. I expect to mail out the listing about the 2nd week of November with a close date of 1st or 2nd week of January. There will be a large number of hi-grade and scarce coins and paper money in the sale. Also, it will feature a large selection of scarce Emergency and Guerilla Currency. If you are interested in consigning, please ship your items to me by the 12th of October. I charge 15% of the selling price. If the item doesn't sell, no charge. In Mailbid III, I received over $95,000 worth of bids with over $45,000 of actual awards from 125 bidders. Good Philippine material is in high demand. When I send out the Mailbid IV list in November, I will provide more details on the PCF. We have many topics that have been crying for comment, but that have been replaced by “hard” news. Please do not misunderstand. That is good news! Last week Ski’s column was postponed and dominated by weather concerns. This week seems to be much worse! Hopefully, he will be able to give us a column Friday. Meanwhile, tomorrow I will be off to Iowa for the POW conference. It looks like Larry will be hurricane casualty for that event, but two other Gramsters will be filling in. Marv Mericle and Flemming Hansen are going to join Steve Feller and me there. You can be sure that we will create a lot of news there (hopefully without getting arrested). Why were the Belgian bread coupons not included in WORLD WAR II REMEMBERED. G. W Slade Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your question. The basic answer is that we did not cover ration items in Remembered. A comprehensive book of just US ration items might be a large as the current book. In fact, there is such a book. Someone will shout that we did cover SOME ration items and that is true. There are a few items that we thought warranted special attention. This was basically because of some traditional interest, evidence that the item might have actually circulated, or because for some other reason it had the “feel” of money. Finally, in at least one case we thought that the ration items sort of made up for our lack of information on other issues for the area! None of these are very satisfactory answers, but… Editor Hi Fred I bought a note from Leo May last week in Cincinnati at the Sharonville. I and had a great time talking to him we talked about your place and I told him I stopped by in 1992 and how impressed I was with you room and he said you call it the hole, BLACK HOLE I think, and you can't even get in it any more but I don't find that, that far fetched I have a room like that my self.
