From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 744 Date: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 10:08 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 744 Tuesday Oct 8, 2002 Report from London by Joe Boling In the week before the IBNS London paper money fair there are two auctions and two society meetings, at all of which gram-related material may be traded or shown. I had received the Bonham's catalog by mail before leaving Seattle, and had determined that there was nothing in it for me this year (save for one Tokyo Olympic medal that I could not identify from the skimpy description in the catalog). (Phillips Son and Neale merged with Bonham's within the past year and their name disappeared.) Just as well, because I forgot the catalog at home and thought that the sale was Thursday for notes, Friday for coins and medals. When I visited Colin Narbeth's shop on Wednesday and was told that Simon was at the auction, I assumed he was looking at lots. Nope--the sale was that afternoon. When I got to Bonham's to look at the medal Thursday morning, the coin and medal sale was already underway. So I went on to Spink's, to look at lots there for their Friday sale (which I did manage to remember the right day for). As last year, the sale was dominated by Bradbury Wilkinson proofs and internal specimens. This material is useful for learning how many of a given note were printed, because BWCo had a practice of showing the starting and ending serial numbers of a print run on the specimens that were prepared for their archives. If I had had more time, I would have gone through the catalog carefully and recorded all that at for SB-listed notes; however, I only asked to see lots that caught my attention for one reason or another, usually NOT because they had interesting data showing on them. I attended only the morning session, and not all of that, but here are some results of interest to gramsters (prices reported are hammer prices IN STERLING; add 15% juice, plus 17.5% VAT on the juice (total 17.625%--blechh), and if I indicate "+VAT," that means that the lot was consigned by someone outside the EEC, and VAT is also due on the whole of the hammer price, making the total odds and ends due 32.625% of hammer, unless the piece is exported back outside the EEC, in which case the extra VAT is refundable, and above a certain level the VAT on the premium is also refundable--make you want to patronize auctions closer to home?). Denmark, Allied military command, specimen 25 ore, 1,5,100 kroner: 1000 pounds (on an estimate of 250-300). The most interesting is titled Swank of England, and inscribed "I say to the bearer that Uncle Sam will pay fifty rounds for every drink he does not receive while in Jolly Old England. James Moonshine, Chief Secretary." I took it to be a fantasy for US troops/airmen. Now, which war? In which war was alcohol banned from installations? Both? The vignette is of Britannia standing with trident and shield, over a ribbon inscribed Operae Pretium Est. I am told that means "Ready to work." Anyone read it differently? The other two pieces in the lot are a watch warranty made to look like a white note, and a hand- drawn 50 pound note of 1816 signed Al Forfun, endorsed on the back Wm Wade Porteous/Oct 1941. Anyone know him? Additional endorsements are Fairy Bumkin, F. Orgery, I Laughs, and Al. Forfun. Sketched. for play. That lot cost me 240 pounds--ouch. The other piece I bought in that sale is a Demerary and Essequibo (later British Guiana) note of 1830 denominated One Joe/22 guilders. It's for my biographical collection (cost 140 pounds). ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Gramless. Yes, I have left you Gramless since Thursday. I have been on the road to the POW conference. I had every intention of filing reports from that event, but it just was not to be as I was kept busy just about every minute. You will read much more about that in the days ahead (possibly even hours ahead as I will try to put out a Gram tonight when I get home (this is being prepared in a truck stop 20 cents per min! Yikes!)) Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, In response to GW Slade question regarding Belgium bread ration coupons I would like to offer the following. Many European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and others, issued ration coupons for various items. So did Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many others. This is an area of study that still is being discovered and expanded today. If Mr. Slade has reference to the Belgium Bread Chits that a gramster is selling, I believe them to not be issued by any government, but indeed they are a chit to get a piece of bread with a meal perhaps on a ship (S.M.Vooriut). Many European restaurants would charge you by the number of rolls or slices of bread you took along with dinner and this might be a way of getting some bread for a chit. While the main focus of the Society of Ration Token Collectors is United States rationing, there are several member, including our Editor, who collect and write articles in our quarterly publication on foreign rationing.
