From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 745 Date: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 12:33 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 745 Wednesday Oct 9, 2002 More BEP Information By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski During our recent visit to Washington, D.C. , Fred and I uncovered a number of interesting items as we looked for information on the series 481 $5 note that appears to be from a fourth printing. As I previously reported all documents indicate that there were only three printings of the $5 and $10 notes while the 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c and $1 notes all had a fourth printing. We had both previously inspected the subject note carefully and feel that it is a genuine note and definitely fits the criteria of the fourth printing. Right now it has to placed among those unsolved mysteries of MPC. Someday additional information may appear that will answer this question, just as other questions have been answered in the recent past. One of the neat pieces of information that we did find however had to do with the Special Army Currency of 1948 for Germany. Most of you are familiar with the code names of Operation Husky, Tom Cat, Wild Dog, Ordain and Toy Horse, if you have read your World War II Remembered. These were the classified code names (long since declassified) for the production of Allied Military Lire, Francs, Marks, Schillings, and Yen respectively. But how about Doorknob and Birddog? Fred claims to remember seeing them before, but I sure don't. Anyway, I saw reference to these two code names in correspondence between the Bureau and other agencies. Nowhere was there a document or a definitive statement that says, "Doorknob is the code name for……." After reading through the correspondence, it however became pretty obvious that Operation Doorknob was the codename for the four notes engraved by the American Bank Note Company (the 10, 20, 50, and 100 deutsche mark, series of 1948 notes) while Operation Birddog, was Tudor Press's contribution of the lithographed DM2 and DM5 notes as well as the DM20 and DM50 without series 1948 printed on them. This Special Army Currency series of 1948 has a lot more questions that need to be answered just like our unanswered questions of MPC. Some of the ones I've looked for answers on but have not been satisfied with what I've come up with are: Why are there no replacements for the notes printed by the American Bank Note Company? Did they renumber an identically serial numbered note when they needed a replacement? Why was there both a stamped circled B and a perforated B for notes used in Berlin and why do some notes appear with both? Why did both ABNC and Tudor both print different DM20 and DM50 valued notes for this series? Were the two Tudor notes supposed to be used in the 1949 series since they did not have Series 1948 printed on them? Was this plan abandoned since they did not have Bank Deutscher Lunder printed in the design? Marcus Turner, Harold Kroll and I visited the Bank Deutscher Lunder in Frankfort on our trip to the Maastricht paper money show over two years ago, hoping to find answers to questions similar to those posed above, but were amazed that our host could not provide any answers. In his defense, the curator had quit within the last couple of months, so our timing was not good. There is a lot of work that still needs to be done on this eries. Fred and I did find some printing totals for the four Tudor notes as we rummaged through the mounds of paperwork at the Bureau. This was exciting to me as I found that there was a second printing of the DM2 note, while the other three only had a single printing. DM2 1st print A00000001A to A73360000A 2nd print A73360001A to A23360000B M5 one print only B00000001A to B28800000B DM20 one print only C00000001A to C56800000A DM50 one print only D00000001A to D42000000A This information is not in your WWII Remembered, so you may want to write it in. If anyone discovers any difference between that first and second printing of the DM2, I sure would like to hear about it. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Today is the last day that we will run the long list of MPC for sale by Larry Gibbs. If you have not looked at it before today, shame on you, but DO look. We have been way behind in maximizing the usefulness of the exchange system. A large part of that fault lies here at HQ, but part of it can be shared with every seller who has not sent lists of items for sale, and every potential buyer who does not look EVERY DAY to see if there is something for sale. Even though the quantity and frequency of new listings has not been what we would like, some very good things have been and continue to be sold in the exchange section. On another matter. No it is not Thursday. Larry’s column was late for the last two or three weeks because of travel and technical problems. We hope to make up for it this week by publishing it early! Furthermore, since it was available, publishing it today will help me out by filling up this Gram and giving me some more time to prepare the first report on the POW conference. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, Ray Czahor's "Event for Philippine Numismatists" (in Gram 743) at the Baltimore ANA in 2003 is something I am also supporting. At the Baltimore ANA Convention, I am moderating the NI (Numismatics International) and IBNS (International Bank Note Society) meetings. Both meetings will need a speaker (who is volunteering?) and I want them to talk about Philippine coins/medals in the NI meeting and Philippine paper in the IBNS meeting, but there will also be my standard member show and tell, and I will request the members to bring a Philippine item(s) to show and tell, if they have anything in their collections. I have also volunteered to be part of the ANA Numismatic Theater and will talk and show Philippine material at my time. Is there anyone else who can do this? At this time, I am still in the early stages of adding the NBS (Numismatic Bibliomania Society) to my ANA list. If this happens, I will be requesting its members to bring one or more significant references to the NBS meeting at this convention. Another item I am planning is to have the Krause Publications, Inc. Standard Catalogs of World Coins (KM) and World Paper Money (Pick) pages for the Philippines displayed somewhere (and at all meetings) and everyone can bring pieces/information to show an update is needed and have the pieces photographed for the illustrations. I will also be requesting everyone I know who has Philippine material in their collection to create an exhibit for the ANA. For many Gramsters, this can be the MPC that was used there, but also many WWII pieces and related material. And all dealers with pieces should bring everything they have and prominently display it at their tables. The Philippines is a significant numismatic area this is largely overlooked by Americans and Ray's Philippines Collectors Forum at this convention is an excellent idea. Please do not assume everyone interested in this area knows about this event. Please contact them now and alert them to it. If you have more ideas to support this event, contact Ray (cjcpi@comcast.net) and/or me (Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com) about your ideas and volunteering to speak, exhibit, etc. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Gram, I just received the inexpensive mini UV light I mentioned in a previous letter. While they can detect fluorescent ink, as advertised, they are not very good overall. The band width is too broad, so the visible spectrum light which the bulb gives off tends to wash out the UV effectiveness. So, I withdraw my recommendation for this product. You know the old saying: "you get what you pay for."
