From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 748 Date: Sunday, October 13, 2002 10:15 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 748 Sunday Oct 13, 2002 My two cents worth on the Carlson Chambliss replicas: By David Klinger I bought three sets of the replicas, and was given another set and used them in a different way than I have seen described so far in the Gram. I assembled the sets in photo albums, with brief descriptions of each series, and an overall summary of the MPC program. I then donated them to various military museums to be used as "reference sets" to show to museum visitors. Two of these museums had NO examples of MPC on display, so they were glad to have this reference set, since it is unlikely that they would ever have a "real' set. I have heard many interesting and positive remarks about these sets from museum visitors: "Hey, these are the ones I used in Japan in 1951." "My son sent me one of these from Vietnam." "I never dreamed that there were so many different types of these!" etc. In any case I like the replicas, and I don't think they will have any significant negative impact on the MPC market. I would make a related challenge to Gramsters: The ANA museum does not have even a basic set of MPC in their holdings. This is a museum collection which should have a "complete set" of real MPC, and which they will only realize through donations. Gramsters would be the best source for these donations! ============================================== Editorial ============================================== The recent sale of the serial number two note on ebay made me think about auctions in general and electronic auctions in particular. I have always felt that ebay (and others) should allow bidding to continue after the closing time if there had been a bid in the last 1-2 minutes. It seemed (and seems) to me that this is more like a real auction. I spoke with a representative from ebay about this at an ANA convention (do not remember what year). He insisted that ebay had exhaustively studied this matter and that they believe that the current way is the best for all concerned. All includes the seller of course. I did not agree with him at the time, but more or less accepted his opinion. After all, what else could I do and it was interesting to learn that they had studied the matter. I believe that things have changed. It seems to me that ALL SERIOUS bidding on ebay is now done with a sniping service. This means that much of the fun and drama has been taken out of sales. Everything serious happens in the last few seconds and there is nothing to watch. Heritage online auctions have implemented my suggestion (they figured it out on their own) with a twist. Heritage allows bidding to continue after the closing time until there has been no bids for a few minutes (I do not recall how many minutes). The twist is that after the initial close, only bidders who had bid BEFORE the close may continue to bid. I think that this is a VERY GOOD idea. Can you imagine how long David (and I) might have been bidding on that 2?! Even for the nonbidders it would have been great fun to watch which is good for everyone. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gramsters, In response to Phil's letter I thought it was a very good point of view and I am sure there are some collectors out there that will follow this view. I do personally know of several collectors that have gone the other way. After receiving a set of the copies there collecting of originals increased with determination and excitement. Only time will tell. Doug Bell Hello Gramsters and Broiled Physician! In reference to your UV light questions! In Gram # 736 I broke down in detail how to use these "lights" . To refresh those who didn't read it or forgot.... First! It is BEST to do this examination at "night" or in a room "without and outside light interference"!! Because the "other lights/ incandescent/ sunlight" cancel the effects out!! Most important! Also I tried all the lights! And have them all! Last night I "tagged" all my "HI-BRITE" paper varieties!! For instance! ALL series #651 are on "Hi-Brite" paper! and many of the "600" series! Like "FIRST PRINTING" FRACTIONALS #641 also the 5 and 10 centers of series #692!!! I found one 10 cent 692 that is "NOT" on "HI-BRITE" paper!! etc. SO what light....... A standard "BIG" 17 inch one I bought in a "CD/ record" shop (self contained)! or perhaps where ever "party" lights are sold! My light was about $20+! And WORKS JUST GREAT!!! So stay away from the "pocket" versions as they are not "strong" enough to get the "full effect" Just use a "big" blacklight!! Hold your notes close to the light 6-14 inches away and enjoy, this allows hands free movement!!! It's worth the effort!
