From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 749 Date: Monday, October 14, 2002 6:24 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 749 Monday Oct 14, 2002 More on the Carlson Chambliss replicas By Kenneth J. Berger I bought one of Chambliss' MPC reproduction sets. I only collect one dollar notes & coins and for many years have had a complete set of one dollar MPCs in UNC. I had & still have no desire to purchase other denominations, yet I thought it would be nice to have a complete reproduction set. I own many reproductions/copies in my collection (1776 Continental Dollars (in various metals), 1794 Silver Dollar, 1796 Silver Dollar, 1804 Silver Dollar, Gobrecht Dollar, 1894 Morgan Dollar, etc., etc.). Does this mean I do not desire original copies? Of course not! In fact, I have originals of a number of these copies. But by having reproductions/copies, I accomplish a number of things: 1) it lends a sense of "completeness" to my collection until I can get the original, 2) I have an example of a coin/note in UNC/CU condition which 99.44% (to borrow a phrase from the old Ivory Soap commercial) of collectors will never own in such a condition. In fact, the majority of collectors will never even own the coin or note in ANY condition, 3) when exhibiting I am able to show both the obverse/reverse (front/back) of the coin/note. Without reproductions/copies, I would have to have two examples of every coin/note exhibited to accomplish this task. Someday I hope to have original copies of these coins/notes in any condition but in the meantime the reproductions fit the bill. Phil goes on to discuss the Shelby Cobra. When I was single, I too was very much involved in antique sport scars, although not Cobras (they were out of my price range). I owned MGs. I had a 1952 MG-TD among others. Now I could have bought a nice replicar (as such cars are called) of an MG-TD (there are many different ones available). Had I done so, I would have had a car that was brand new, used modern parts, had more safety features, and could be used as an everyday driver. But did I buy a replicar --- no! I bought an original, which lacked modern safety features, had to be constantly maintained, and could definitely not be used as an everyday driver. Many people can not tell the difference between a replicar & an original MG-TD. But I could & so could other MG enthusiasts, and that is what counts! I knew I owned an original, other MG lovers knew I owned an original, so who cares what the masses thought. The same is true for coins/notes. You will know if it is original and so will fellow collectors. Who cares about the masses. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to enlighten the masses as to the differences between originals and reproductions/copies. Finally, Phil bemoans the fact that these reproductions may depress the market. Perhaps it is true, perhaps it is not. But are lower prices such a bad thing? Won't lower prices bring more collectors into the fold? And won't more collectors result in more research being done? And won't more collectors result in more discoveries being made and knowledge being obtained? And this is a bad thing? I don't get it. Many collectors will pick an area of interest based upon the possibility of their completing the collection within their lifetime. Higher prices limit the possible areas of collecting. For example, I started collecting California fractional gold and felt I had a reasonable chance of putting together a fairly nice type set. But in the 1980s, the prices of Calif. gold went sky high, especially on the rarer pieces and I realized that unless I won the lottery I would never be able to finish my collection. So I stopped collecting them & turned my interests elsewhere. We all want to see our collections go up in value. But remember, as value increases the number of collectors who can afford these coins/notes decreases and this hurts the hobby. So, I see nothing wrong with the MPC reproductions. In fact, maybe as I look at my set I might be convinced that I too need a complete original set of MPCs. As of right now, this hasn't happened and I am still happy with my UNC set of one dollar MPCs. But who knows what will happen in the future. After all, the colors are pretty, a complete original set would be nice to have, I'd feel more like an MPC collector, I'd have a sense of accomplishment, I'd . . . Hmm? Maybe it's not such a bad idea. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== You might be interested to know the financial structure of your MPCGram. The columnists (and other writers) share the subscription revenue and the Gram takes the advertising revenue. On an annual basis this makes exactly zero for everyone. The total gross/net total total total all-time income (not profit) by the Gram is zero dollars (euro, yen etc). Most of you knew this, but I mention it as I am in trouble with some advertisers. A few dealers have been rather insistent that their contact information be included in the Hot Contact List below. The bottom line is that the HCL is paid advertising. HCL listings are a small bonus given to advertisers who support BNR Press publications by advertising therein. The notice here in the Gram is fairly (if not perfectly) clear on this matter. This is also one reason that we resist the suggestion to drop the HCL daily and include it only weekly. These folks have supported the MPC book (and others) so we want to support them. Also we know that this feature does fill a useful purpose. You may not use it often, but you know that the information is there when you need it. I invite your comments on this matter. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, I enjoyed the pictures of the Summer Seminar. It reminds me that there is supposed to be an MPC display opening at the ANA museum this fall. I also remember you discussing it with the museum curator. But I have heard nothing since. What's happening - if anything? Warner Warner, The ANA exhibition of the WWII numismatics is currently scheduled to open Dec 7th. There has been a little bit about this in the Gram, but your point is still well taken. I am putting the opening in the calendar below. Larry Lee, the museum curator, and his staff are hard at work on this event. Larry reads the Gram every day, if you have any suggestions, I am sure that he will be happy to hear them. One important thing from the Gram side of the house is to decide if we want to try to make a special effort to get gramsters to attend the opening and have a special social even of our own. Possibly we can do this but not at the opening? We really need to discuss this. Warner, what are your thoughts? Editor Dear Gram, What a Great idea!!!! to give to military museums. A heck of a lot better than some artificial pictures. Also, could be used for "chumming" to get the real ones from viewers. Some people I know just gave the funny money to their kids to destroy and with all the vets dying now, somebody may see them and say" Hey I saw some of those in dad's miscellany." So a little publicity may draw more out. Carlson has done a great service and should get a lot of credit. Using Marcus' reasoning, we should not have even have pictures of the real ones they are not real!!! Nick Dear Gram, My take on the Chambliss replicas, copies or whatever the current buzz words to describe the produced pieces. First and foremost he made these for the basic reason in general use in America, to MAKE MONEY!!!! It is what keeps America rolling. And he has succeeded even before the first set was sold. What happens in the subsequent years, we the buyers, sellers of MPC, along with the general public will determine. The copies are a chance for you to make a personal decision. The American way again. Take some responsibility for your actions. I don't need some lawyer to file a class action suit. Buy or not buy. Support or not. You choose. I do not buy any of the issues. It's my choice. There was some good to come out of this, from my point of view. I was able to acquire the series 481 25 cent note that has been produced in quantity. As it turns out, it is a very rare note. For the growing number of multiprint MPC collectors it is the only ( to date) GEM UNC 4th printing. David E. Seelye PS. Fred, the $3777.77 was my last bid Dear David, Yes, that was your last bid and my last bid is a matter of public record. However, I certainly would have gone the little bit more to beat you. Then you might have done the same. Furhermore, it is not likely that we would have snipped our final bids if we had had the opportunity for “extended bidding.” Editor. ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 Paper Money Convention IBNS Sydney & Melbourne Chapters 2/3 November 2002 Artarmon Motor Inn, Sydney Australia Contact Tony James wk. 61 2 9235 0888 fax. 61 2 9235 0588 email:- info@tonyjamesnoteworld.biz Come on escape the Winter in the north and see the Land Down Under.
