From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 751 Date: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 3:03 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 751 Wednesday Oct 16, 2002 WWII Money Museum Opening at ANA By Warner Talso Regarding the MPC exhibit opening at ANA Headquarters, first, I think it is important that Gramsters/Festers be represented. Show the flag. We want to demonstrate that we are serious about supporting military numismatics in general and MPC in particular. Next, we need to find out the schedule of events. Larry, what is the status of the exhibit and the proposed plan for the day? This will, to a great extent, determine how we can fit it. What can we do? We can just attend and be supportive. We can ask to participate in some manner. Make a short speech. Who is the invited speaker? We could make a donation or loan to the exhibit - some peripheral item like a signature stamp or a briefcase. We could have a social event of our own and possible invite selected guests - maybe invite everyone. How many guests are expected? Will the next the summer session be advertised? Marcus, can we have a flyer for next years scholarships ready for hand out? Fred, what about a flyer for FEST IV? Who can attend? December 7th is a Saturday. I can attend - it is a relatively easy trip for me. I already have my kitchen pass for the weekend. Building Pedigrees By Doug Bell On EBay is a 692 5$ in XF that an interesting story.2 years ago I meet a veteran named Gene Ryan from Missouri. He attended the MPC fest 2002. He was a finance officer in Vietnam. He is one of the few people whom I have met who actually paid solders in MPC, and collected MPC. He pulled out notes in CU for his collection from the stock that he had used to pay solders. It is not very often that you can tie an issued note to a pay officer. The notes on ebay is one that gene issued. I know this because the 692 5$ note he had in his collection was one I traded for 2 years with SN# 02832151. The one on EBay is sn# 02832769, 618 #'s difference. This isn't in itself a great find, but, after talking to Gene he told me that the note was issued in 1 of 2 places Nahbe or Binh Thuy Vietnam. I may add this note also is a matching position number and the denomination. Which in Fred's words this is "Very Sexy" I have made it a primary goal of mine to assemble a set of MPC with this characteristic. At this time I only need 6 notes to complete a 90 note set with matching numbers. The note can also be viewed atwww.papermoneyworld.net/grams/700-799/images/6925$.jpg and the ebay note at this address: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1389920862 ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Bravo Warner! I am excited that you have stepped forward to say “count on me.” I am also impressed that you got a kitchen pass. That is the only problem that I have remaining to resolve before committing to the opening of the ANA WWII money museum opening. In chatting with the curator yesterday, he said that he will be delighted to have us any way that we want to do it—opening or later. I think that Warner has the right idea. We should try to get as many as possible to the opening, then if we want another meeting at another time, consider that separately. Larry Lee (the curator) also told me that the exhibition will come done shortly after the summer seminar so now we know the parameters of the thing. If you have caught your breath from writing about the Chamblis copies, write to us with some thoughts on the exhibition. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, A reply to Joe B's inquiry about the series 651 $5.00 serial number 2 note on eBay. By looking at the bid history you can see that Harold's bid of $2333.33 was bested by Fred's bid. At this price level the bidding increment is $50.00. So when Fred's bid was posted 13:20:53 his bid was $2383.33. The next second my bid was posted, and eBay raised Fred's bid to Fred's limit $3752.52. My bid of $3777.77 was the final bid and topped Fred's highest bid by $25.25 and I won the note. What you don't see is Fred's bid of $2383.33 due to the timing of the bids. And I believe that the bidding service only bids to eBay. The service submits the bids at the time you select. We both used the same service. The winning bid was placed about 10 minutes before the end of the sale. I had a somewhat smaller bid placed a day before. I had an appointment with a car repair service that I thought would not let me bid again before the end of the sale. As it turned out the repair was a figment of a car dealership, I had a second opinion done that said the dealership was trying to rip me off to the tune of $300+. I got home about 4PM and changed my bid about 4:10, after considerable pondering. David Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I am going through a stack of auction catalogs and found another one with a date (Oct 26) that has not expired. It is the Mavin International auction in Singapore and it has a bunch of WWII and other military lots. You can contact them and/or see the lots at www.MavinInternational.com. I have been perusing the latest Public Auction Catalog 16 from Remy Bourne and noticed some author's names in the book section like Basso, Beresiner, Boling, Daniel, Dorling, Kish, Narbeth, Petrov, Schwan (?), and Shafer. It is a strange mix of names but they all seemed to have written something about WWII. If anyone is interested in bidding in this auction, contact Remy at "RemyBourne@Qwest.net" or Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, Remy is a Gramster. Aside to Remy: If you can email the specific WWII listings we will run them in the Gram both as a news item then in the for sale section. Steamed editor Hi Gramsters, Here is my take on the MPC repro's, I agree with Kenneth J. Berger when he writes, "But are lower prices such a bad thing? Won't lower prices bring more collectors into the fold?(Yes) And won't more collectors result in more research being done?(Probably) And won't more collectors result in more discoveries being made and knowledge being obtained?(Very likely) And this is a bad thing?(No) I don't get it.(I do, Phil is worried about his investment, which is OK, but more collectors will ensure that his investment will have a possible buyer when he decides to part with it. Will Phil ever sell his collection? NEVER HE'S TAKING IT WITH HIM! Right Phil!) Many collectors will pick an area of interest based upon the possibility of their completing the collection within their lifetime.(That describes me) Higher prices limit the possible areas of collecting.(How true) We all want to see our collections go up in value.(Not everyone, I would be happy to see it maintain at least my original investment.) But remember, as value increases the number of collectors who can afford these coins/notes decreases and this hurts the hobby."(VERY VERY TRUE!) I believe the more people get to see and hear about these beautiful (for the most part) works of pocket art, carried by our military in far off lands, the better it is for us all. If the MPC repro's help in this endeavor, such as when they are donated to a museum or in some other way exhibited, that's great! I have not yet bought a repro set, but I probably will and I will still collect the real thing anyway.
