From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 753 Date: Friday, October 18, 2002 6:40 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 753 Friday Oct 18, 2002 Military Fest Certificates By Al Glaser As many of you are aware from a prior plea for help, I am in the process of putting together the "Less than Comprehensive Guide to MFC". Obviously, I have gotten in way over my head taking this project on, but I have become fascinated with all of the different series of MFC. Within each series there are many varieties with inverts, uniface, counterfeits, voids, replacements, star varieties, and on and on. At Fest I our first series of MFC was introduced. These notes were altered MPC notes. The $1 was on a 521 $1 note, $5 on a 541 $5 note, $10 on a 521 $10 note and the $20 on a 681 $20 note. As I began this project I noticed Post Office stamp cancels on the backs of the notes. Some had 1, some had 2, some had 1 but a different date than the other. WHAT DID THIS MEAN! Turns out at Fest I the participants reenacted "Payday" with the Paymaster counting out each mans pay. All of the notes paid out were stamped Feb 25 2000 on the back which validated them. The next day at Fest must have been the poker game. More money was needed so extra notes were validated with Feb 26 2000 as well as notes that were used to buy PX items the day before. So now 3 varieties were created. 1 with Feb 25 2000, 1 with Feb 26 2000, and 1 with both stamps. Fest II the following year began with the same currency as in Fest I. This created a new variety with the Mar 9 2001 validation stamp. Of course you can see what happened, some of the notes used at Fest I that were turned into the Pay office then reissued at Fest II now have a Feb 25 2000 and a Mar 9 2001 stamp. I have even had 1 report of a 3 stamp note with the Feb 25 & 26 2000 and Mar 9 2001. This series was withdrawn on Mar 12 2001 when the new issue of 011 was issued, but that will be a story for another time. Now the possibility exists for a 4 stamp note, so get your notes out and see what you have. Could be a discovery piece. And since you have them out, why not jot down the serial numbers in an email and send it to thetrader.2@cox.net so I can get an accurate listing of all notes known. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Ski is flying his own computer again. We chatted for awhile yesterday and he told me that I cheated him (and thereby you) by not running a column of his! Fortunately, he had a copy and has sent it so we should get a bonus Thurski this weekend! As you can see from the lead story, Al Glaser is hard at work researching Fest certificates. I hope that you can find some varieties to tantalize him and we look forward to many more reports from Al. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, For Fest, Or Four Fest, Or 4 Fest, Or IV Fest, Or IIII Fest, Or 4th Fest, Or 4th Printing Fest, Or....Well, You Know What I'm Getting At...Consider A....."WEST FEST"......It Has A Catchy Sound To It !! Respect, Ed Beaman Dear Ed, Thanks for all of the good ideas. Yes, I have thought of a West Fest and expect that it will happen one day. In the meantime do you suppose that you can be beamed down for Four Fest (comments expected from Joe on capitalization)? Editor Dear editor, In response to the question of how many copies were made that info was given out freely at the 2002 fest I do remember the cost of printing was $17,000and there was a pile 2 foot high and about 20 ft long but I was fuzzy on that because of everything else going on I didn't want to Miss I seem to recall the number 940,000 notes being discussed. That would be 1000 sets. Doug Dear Gram, iN rESPONSE tO tHE cORRECTNESS oF cAPITALIZATION oF "gRAM" iN tHe aRTICLE......I read the GGGGGGram for the information and knowledge being shared with/by others (of historic knowledge). I really don't give a rat's a** if it's cAPITALIZED or not. The GGGGram is a great item to be shared by all (at a cost that even I can afford). I think the staff should be congratulated for their time and effort AND not belittled for insignificant discrepancies. I thought the idea of the GGGGram was to open communications between individuals, to share knowledge, and to help educate collectors AND the general public with historic data. PK6 Dear PK, We love ALL mail. We have lost a few, and censored a (very) few, but mostly we share them. Actually, the matter of capitalization is of great interest to me. We want to get the terminology—and capitalization—right. Once we learn it, it is just as easy to get it right as wrong, and there is no telling when we are teaching something that we do not intend to. Joe and I spent a great amount of energy working on capitalization in WWII Remembered so we share a point of view even if we do not agree on this particular point. Here is an interesting capitalization question. Obviously MPC is capitalized, but what about “military payment certificates?” It is not an easy question. Editor Howdy from East Texas! In 1969-70, I was a college student in Houston. One of our Greater Houston Coin Club members at that time was Virgil Hancock who also happened to be the ANA President then. I had to dig deep into my college kid's nearly always empty pocket to find the $5 I contributed to help create ANAAS (ANA Authentication Service). Virgil was a powerful voice for taking the ethical high road in Numismatics in all its manifestations. His efforts have fallen to the demand of the bean counters...
