From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 754 Date: Saturday, October 19, 2002 2:49 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 754 Saturday Oct 19, 2002 MPC Analysis and Questions By Tom Kotch I recently purchased a mpc collection out of Viet Nam (the one advertised by Howard Daniels in the gram). One of the interesting aspects of this grouping was the 16 evidence notes that were included. I will list the characteristics of the pieces as they can be viewed as a microcosm of the entire evidence note population. Stamp Den. Stamp Color Initials Date Comments .10 Void Black FEC 2 Aug 72 ph (pinholes) 1.00 Void Black 1.00 Void Purple 1.00 Void Purple 1.00 Void Purple 1.00 Not. Neg. Black ph 5.00 Void Purple 5.00 Void Black TEU 22 July 72 ph 5.00 Void Black TEU 22 July 72 ph 5.00 Void Purple 5.00 Void Purple ph 5.00 Not. Neg. Black 20.00 Void Black TEU 22 July 72 ph 20.00 Void Purple 20.00 Void Purple graffiti #19 20.00 Not. Neg. Black The Void stamp states: Void Not Negotiable Valid as Evidence Only The Not Negotiable stamp states: Not Negotiable CID Evidence. My understanding is that the 20.00 and 1.00 evidence pieces are the most common; 5.00 being less common and the 10.00 being the least common and no fractional pieces known. Fred's MPC book states that fractional pieces were not typically stamped by the MPs. What is interesting is that the .10 and 5.00 pieces stamped Not Negotiable (both black stamps) appear to have been stamped by the same stamp. This is evidenced by the O in Negotiable having a unique appearance on both. So do we have a "discovery piece" or one of those enigmas of mpc collecting that will endure for a long time? In any case, these pieces will be available at Fest IV for viewing and discussion. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== The replacement report by Mel and Jeremy below is interesting on several levels. First, of course, it is important as a research report. Secondly, it is important commercially. It demonstrates that it IS possible to combine commercial interests AND research/news (not directed at anyone in particular). Indeed, this is a model example. Normally, we would not run a notice of something like “Dear Gram, I have a bunch of stuff on ebay.” However, if you take the time to point out a research or just interesting aspect of the material, we are not only willing, but pleased to run it! Obviously, this is important to collectors from a research point of view, but it is also commercially important. We are pleased to announce that the recent report of the Series 541 $10 replacement was sold as a direct result of the announcement in the Gram. Your Gram does sell! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, We have another previously unreported MPC replacement to report. This one has an interesting serial number. It is a Series 541 50 cents with serial number F17344536. This may be the highest serial number known for any MPC replacement. The note is UNC, except for some minor handling. We are calling it AU-UNC. We are offering the note on ebay, Item # 1390719721. Mel and Jeremy Steinberg Dear Steinbergs, Thanks VERY much for the report, EVERY single replacement report is important to the survey. (By the way this report is number 2634 in the survey). Please see additional comments in the editorial. The number is indeed interesting. Your comments here are not exactly correct (this is not the highest number of any MPC replacement, it is not even the highest of Series 541 (with numbers over 21 million)). However, it IS of interest and your description in the ebay listing is even better so everyone should take a look! Editor Greetings Grammeister: What a great marketing tool Mike Cummings and Company have come up with, with the MPC reprints being used for the background of their booth. This no doubt will have a very strong positive effect as collectors are exposed to the wonderful world of collecting MPC. I purchased a set of the sheets for the sole purpose of having them framed for the office. On another matter, I'm pleased to see that Fred has maintained the integrity of the Hot Contact List by not allowing persons whom we may have never heard of talk their way onto the listings. Sadly I no longer have the energy to handle books to any great degree and my days on the contact list are numbered. Too bad the idea of advertising in the various books didn't come about perhaps ten years sooner. While on the subject of the HCL: please change my internet address to read: rbalbaton@aol.com (NO J)RichardDoric C&C Mr. Doric Dear Sir, Thank you for your comments. We have been considering ways for you (and others) to stay on the HCL without advertising in BNR Press book. However, I also would like to point out many dealers who advertise do not carry the books, they just want to reach out to book readers. Editor Dear Editor: Need to report an error in the 4th edition MPC catalog, on page 214, series 541 $10.00 listing. For 857/r1 replacement there is one reported and none listed in the in the summary on page 276. For 857/r2 there is one reported and on page 276 there are 6 reported notes listed. A new 541 $10.00 replacement has been reported, S/N F00726682, position 41. This makes 7 reported notes for the second printing. Harold "Mpckid' Kroll Dear Kid, That probably makes 7 reported replacements for the second printing replacement AND (possibly) 7 reported replacements for the second printing of the book! Editor Dear Editor, In reference to: 'My thoughts on "Carlson's Copies" by Phil Goldstein' I would like to be on the record with my view. I have read Marcus letter, Professor Chambliss reply and now Phil's article. It is obvious that there is more than one view on the subject. I fully respect Marcus and Phil and there position but I respectfully chose to be of the view that these notes actually enhance the hobby. I am not as articulate as either of these gentlemen, but I feel I know each of them well enough to know that they will respect my position as I respect theirs. I bought my first set of these notes from Dr. Chambliss at Fest III. After looking them over, while still at the Fest, I was impressed enough to purchased several more. I sent a few sets to a few of my buddies and relatives who have served in Vietnam and have received nothing but good comment about them. Now I'm sure there are some who may feel my position is somewhat biased as I now, after purchasing several hundred sets from Dr. Carlson, do advertise these sets on eBay, the numismatic press and other publications. My only response to that possible criticism is I was a purchaser or these sets before I began selling them. Because I liked them, I was convinced other would as well. Of all those that have purchased them, to date I've not heard of anyone who dislikes them and I have receive questions asking where one can learn more about these notes. I obviously refer them to Fred's fourth edition. Of course I am cognizant that those who do not like them will obviously not be interested in purchasing them. Only time will tell, but I for one, do not believe these copies will have a negative effect, but rather actually enhance the collecting of MPC. I can speak only for myself, but I've not slowed down one bit in adding to my MPC collecting.
