From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 757 Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2002 11:15 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 757 Tuesday Oct 22, 2002 Misc notes about MPC By Joe Boling In response to Tom Koch's article about his recent evidence note acquisitions, I have the following piece: series 692 (as I assume Tom's are) $5, stamped with his VOID stamp in black on face and back, with the following graffiti on the lower right back corner: 1800 27-7-72 TEU. Staple holes at right end of face. Note that his are dated 22 July, mine 27-7 (same initials). Maybe the guy erred because of the 7s to follow (27-7-72). Ski and Leo did not have to go to all that trouble analyzing Ski's sheet of four GPH chits; it was all reported in the IBNS Journal 40:4, wherein I covered the educational programs at the Melbourne fair last year. You will find there that the GPH Fiji chits were issued in booklets four to a page, and that only one page is extant (belonging to Mark Freehill). Has Mark sold his collection, or is his page no longer unique? I received three more position 8 notes today (and bought another in London three weeks ago). I now have 53 pieces of my basic set. No series is yet complete, and no denomination is yet complete. The series that are closest are 472, 481, and 641, all of which have six of seven notes represented. The denomination that is closest is the $1, with ten of thirteen pieces. Next closest, with nine each are the dimes and (surprise) the $5 (including a nice 541 $5). The denomination that is really hurting is the 50c, with only three pieces represented (there is only one $20, but that's out of three that are needed). The series that is short (of the seven- or eight-note series) is 541, with only two notes. Series 471 and 611 have only three each. A special case is series 651, with only three collectible notes, of which I have none. Does anyone know of any position 8 notes from series 691 or 701? As special interest pieces, I have one replacement note and one evidence note (described above).. Although I own at least two MPC counterfeits (a 471 $10 and a 472 $10, and I think I have a 641 $10 around here also), I have none at position 8. Total invested so far: $4400 (deduct one note and the total drops to $1900--more in line with a recent gram that said this is a working-stiff's hobby). Short Book Review by Mark "Sparky" Watson On Saturday, I received a newly published book entitled Collectors Military Money - British Military Authority (Including Tripolitania) and British Armed Forces. R.J. Marles put together this 56 page book that is a Richards Reference and Price Guide; that is, it's basically a catalog displaying, in color, the various notes and tokens along with providing a price in VF, EF, and Unc in most cases. Each item has a catalog number (RM) with cross references as available to Pick, SB, and van Elmpt. The book is divided into four parts: Part One: British Military Authority 6d, 1/-, 2/6d, 5/-, 10/-, L1 (L = the pound sign) and the Z prefix overprints Part Two: British Military Authority in Tripolitania 1 to 1000 lira Part Three: NAAFI Tokens, 1/2 and 1 franc, 10 and 20 groschen, 1/4 and 1/2 piastre, 5 and 10 lira, 1/2d and 1d, 1/2 and 1 unit Part Four: BAFSV First through sixth series Overall, a nice book with the most beneficial part being the color renditions of the notes; the notes are only 70% of actual size for legal purposes. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We have had a few nice submissions recently about world affairs and even military matters. In the cases I happened to agree with the positions taken. However, there was nothing relating to numismatics in the articles. We are a newsletter of military numismatics. Occasionally we include material related to numismatics (without the military), but we will not generally run military stories without a military twist. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Hi, I have the following MPC ready for donation: series 661 .10, .50, and $1.00 series 481 .10 Where do I send them? Gavin Dear Gram, After reading all of the commentary on the copies, it strikes me that it all boils down to this: Collect/enjoy what you want and allow everyone else to do same.
