From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 759 Date: Friday, October 25, 2002 7:34 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 759 Friday Oct 25, 2002 “Show” Report by Robert Drake Let me tell the Gramsters about the Marina, CA Air Faire held at the former Fritche Army Air Field. The Marina Rotary just completed putting on a great little Air Faire at the old Ft Ord field. Salinas had the CA International Air Show two weeks ago with the Blue Angels as headliners. Date was Saturday, 19 Oct 02. The gate was open to all and there was no charge. The main intent has been to honor WWII vets. The highlight was the Fighter Ace symposium attended by a number of the real Aces. There were several retired 05s, 06s and an 07 in attendance sharing their memories as Aces. Mayor Jim Perrine welcomed all the vets and Council Member/Retired Colonel Ila Metee-McCutchon spoke at the dinner served to the vets at the The Sky's Edge Restaurant by Bill Lee and crew. A gratuitous tri tip meal was served for 85. There were various food booths, static displays and other commercial vendor booths. We had about 100 vintage cars to oooh and ah over. I selected a 1966 red GTO but he wouldn't take MPC......The Committee put on a silent auction with a huge display of aviation memorabilia for sale. We completely sold out at the auction. I decided to show some MPC at a booth set up in the display hangar. Set up two cases with examples from the replica notes currently being sold and talked about in the Gram as well samples of genuine notes from all the MPC series. Freds's book was available for inspection. I chose not to display the 471 $5, 541 $5 or 661 $10. You know the story about pearls before swine.....a number of vets remembered their use of MPC. Other former dependents shared their memory of MPC too. I did speak with a few vets about C Days. At any rate, it was an easy way to share our hobby of MPC collecting with people who wandered by the booth. Thanks to retired Master Sgt (USAF) Bill Dietzel for keeping his eyes on the table while I was out running other errands. Bill is President of the US Airpower Museum in Fresno. So, check that out when you travel west. We had about twenty older vintage aircraft up and running. From Stearman Bi Planes to P51 Mustangs. Fans could secure rides on a number of warbirds including the P51s. Next year, fly out west via Oakland, SFO, Monterey or just come in from twelve o'clock high and land at the Marina Int'l Airport. We've got hangars, tie downs, skydiving, ultralites, rental cars, motels and dining opportunities. And there's always Carmel, Monterey and Pebble Beach (Currently $375 for a round of golf). Contact Retired MAJ Bill Lee @ 831-384-2644 at The Sky's Edge restaurant and he'll set you up. Plan for the event on the third Saturday in October, 2003. Those of you who remember Ft Ord and visited Stillwell Hall (Enlisted Club overlooking the Pacific) might be surprised to hear of talk to move some or all of it close to the main gate and use the building as a train station+++ for future trains and a visiting center. I know everyone would enjoy a visit to Northern CA. What MPC will you trade for a ride on a P51, Fred? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Kevin’s letter below was wonderfully refreshing. We old guys are so intent on our own projects that we sometimes forget that new collectors are being crated just about every day. Many of those are having the absolute joy of searching for notes to slide into their basic collections of 90 notes. I remember those days well. If I had not had such a wonderful time doing that, I suspect that I would not be typing this editorial at this moment. Of course, I am also having fun looking for position 1 certificates and other things too. The editorial staff of every numismatic publication frets about mix of articles. Aim at advanced or beginning collectors? That is the question. The answer is simple, but not easy to do. The answer is yes. David Harper of Numismatic News and Bank Note Reporter pointed out to me that young and beginning collectors are keen collectors. They do not want watered down articles, they will devour just about everything. In general they will also ask questions and find sources. However, this does not mean that we should not nor cannot reach out a little better. Thankfully Kevin wrote in with his question. Kevin, I hope that you will continue to help us with more such questions. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram Please have "Sparky" list the address and phone number where we can order the new British Military money book. Thanks Al Dear Gram (Al), I got mine from Alistair Gibb at: http://www.west-banknotes.co.uk/newbooks.htm The book is WN58. This is the second time I bought from him, the first was getting Van Elmpt's BAFSV book (which is WN11). I used the secure online form and didn't have any problems. If someone does decide to order some, I'm interested in getting a copy for the ANA library as well as the YN ANA Summer Seminar and Fest auctions. Cheers, Mark Dear Gram, What’s a position 8 note? Just curious to see if I have any. Kevin Dear Kevin, Yours is the letter of the week if not of the month (see editorial). Military payment certificates have serial numbers AND position numbers. Take a look at a certificate. The one or two digit number, smaller in size than the SNs, is the position number. It is the position of the certificate on the sheet. This system is explained in some detail in the Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates (hope that you will consider obtaining (or al least borrowing) a copy). In the past few years some really crazy collectors (describes most of us) have taken to collecting MPC by position number or at least with regard to positions. Your editor collects MPC from position number 1 (and a few other ways too). Joe Boling collects MPC only from position 8, hence his commentary. I should mention that in spite of this commentary, most people simply collect by series and denomination.
