From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 760 Date: Saturday, October 26, 2002 10:14 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 760 Saturday Oct 26, 2002 How I got started By Special K In response to the editors note explaining what was a position 8 note really impressed me for more then one reason! First let me say what a pleasure it is as a new Gramster that what attracted me to these notes is not only there beauty but the wonderful people who collect them, yes all you people who have helped a new guy on the block like me with all my small and large, smart and dumb questions? It is very pleasing to be accepted and talked to with the respect and dignity that most of you respond with and I say Thank you much! Why you ask? Well I am new to collecting and if you could step back just one moment and remember when you bought your first note and how it felt, I just gushed with excitement having a piece of history in my hands and wondered who had owned it before I, and wanted to know all about them? The why's? And where they were when they received the note, of course all the trivia's were interesting too! But what really caught me was something else! Something that sadly you don't see in collecting much any more?? You see I was sitting at my very first currency auction it happened to be at Rosemont Il. last spring I was there to buy some large-size notes and fractional gems. I was over whelmed with excitement it being my first time! I wasVirgin Auction boy, I probably stood out like a young soldier on his first leave overseas! I sat next to a guy who looked like he could be Archie Bunkers brother, he was very friendly, easy going and so was his friend. Being new I had many questions. As a new collector I want to tell you how rough it is trying to get information out of anyone especially at a auction! Coin dealers are the worst! Now days our business is dying in certain ways that a dose of good old times could be the answer! yes I wish dealers would remember where they came from, alls most of them do now is grump, moan and get rude to their possible new clients, all while trying not to share or pass on any information to us green horns. As a new guy on the block I have seen some very nasty things and truthfully I have no clue how these guys stay in business. Enough said this brings me back to how I started collecting MPC. It’s the start of the second session and I am sweating at the pace of the auctioneer, I throw out a few bids and actually win some of the them, but Bunker next to me is having a bad day! What he came to bid on was MPC and it was obviously going for more then its worth to him and this guy really seems to know his stuff so I listened to Bunker like a E.F Hutton commercial because he is actually sharing information and explaining all this stuff to me--a perfect stranger! Yes I am perfect dah! but stranger is more like it! Anyway its break time and we continue to talk over lunch waiting for the session to restart and Archie's friend says if I really want to know more about MPC I should get a book on MPC. He suggests braggingly that old Arch wrote one and he might sign a copy to me. I am thinking right Bunker here writes a book and he's going to sell me a copy at a show in Illinois? but it turned out that Bunker and his pal weren't kidding they said give him ???$$(I forget the amount) in cash and write your name and address down on this napkin and he will send you a copy, now I am starting to think is this guy for real or are they trying to scam me for a couple of bucks? But they were so friendly and helpful I figured the info he gave me that day and his willingness to share and pass on his knowledge was worth the shot of loosing a few greenbacks besides if I loose out well he probably needed it more then I did anyway so I peeled off the cash and the two left the auction floor in a scurry saying good bye! Then sure enough two weeks later I received in the mail my first copy of cataloging and collecting MPC notes and the rest is history. I have also contacted this man several times by e-mail with other questions and he always responds dedicated and cheerfully. Can you imagine if everyone in a position to influence new people acted this way what a big thing this love we have to collect would be? Is it really that hard to be polite and responsive to those who don't know as much as some of you? If I inspire one person out there to do the right thing and share our hobby as much as they can with others with knowledge and enthusiasm I have repaid my Auction friend for steering me in the right direction and inspiring me to collect MPC history. How fun and rewarding it is knowing that I collect with the classiest of all collectors, people with whom camaraderie and caring come to life as much as their collections. How sweet it is! With a special Thanks to Archie! known to most of you as Fred and his unknown friend?? for being such good people and sharing your knowledge with others you truly are an inspiration to us newer collectors. Sincerely Kevin known to most as Special"K" P.S., Fred, YOU FORGOT TO SIGN MY BOOK!! NATIONAL COIN WEEK PROMOTERS CAN WIN ANA SUMMER SEMINAR SCHOLARSHIPS The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is offering two full scholarships to an ANA Summer Seminar at the Association‘s headquarters for the best promotions of the 80th observance of National Coin Week, April 20-26, 2003. This year’s National Coin Week theme, “Tale of the Coin,” focuses on the stories about coins; the people, places and objects depicted on money; and the many collectors, past and present, who collect and study coins, according to ANA Education Director Gail Baker. “We encourage you to ‘wag your tale’ at an April club open house,” Baker says. “Invite the public to attend a special educational program, or ask several club members to prepare 5- to 10-minute presentations on numismatic history, legends or stories. Clubs should include at least one mini-presentation on a currently circulating U.S. coin.” Other activities include: • Entering an exhibit in the National Coin Week Competition at the ANA National Money Show™ in Charlotte, North Carolina, March 21-23, 2003. • Distributing modern circulating or common collectable coins, such as Wheat cents or Buffalo nickels, in 2x2-inch flip. Add interesting numismatic information about the coins on one side of the paper insert and club information on the other (web address, meeting times and place, etc). • Making mini-presentations to local Scout groups, schools, libraries, civic groups, etc., and give each attendee a collectable coin in a 2x2-inch flip with numismatic information and the ANA web address (www.money.org) on the insert. Coin clubs also can utilize the ANA’s “discovery guide,” which is published in the fall and spring, and is an ideal way to introduce the joys of coin collecting to the general public, young and emerging collectors, families and educators. The eight-page "newspaper" is automatically sent to ANA members age 22 and under, and is available in bulk for the cost of shipping. (For more information visit www.money.org/discover.html.) “Try these suggestions or make up your own,” Baker says. “To encourage participation, the ANA again is offering two full scholarships to Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs. One will be awarded to the exhibitor with the best National Coin Week display at the ANA National Money Show in March.” (Exhibit application deadline is February 21, 2003.) “The other scholarship will be awarded to the coin club or the collector who submits a report of the best and most innovative method of how they promoted National Coin Week and the theme ‘Tale of the Coin,’ ” Baker says. (Entries must be received by the ANA Education Department no later than May 31, 2003. Winners will be notified by June 30, 2003, and awards will be presented at the ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore, July 30-August 3.) For more information about National Coin Week 2003, contact the ANA Education Department, 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3279; telephone 719/632- 2646; fax 719/634-4085; E-mail education@money.org; or visit the ANA web site www.money.org. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Well, I guess that I have lots to comment on today. It is great reading about Kevin’s early days in MPC! He certainly hit the nail on the head about the joys of collecting such historical material. Every single one of us can tell a similar story. Tell us how you got stated! I am certainly pleased that I seem to have responded to Kevin’s earlier email inquiries. Kevin, I must warn you, that I probably will not maintain that record. Yes, I respond pleasantly, but too often late, or very late, or very, very late. You might have guess that the unknown accomplise was MPCKid aka Harold Kroll. Although we may have seemed frustrated, it actually worked out that we purchased quite a bit of treasure that night. Hopefully, Kid will tell us that story one day soon. Kevin, you also made an assumption and may have underestimated me! I figure since you want an autograph for your book, that you will just have to come to the Fest to get it! Furthermore, at the Fest you can gather many more autographs. Finally, please save a copy of the Virgin-Auction Boy Meets Acrhie MPC, because we can probably put it in MPC book 5! As you can imagine, I believe that a Gramster not only can, but should, win the ANA scholarship described above and should then attend the military money class. I have a fairly thick skin about being called a coin collector even though I mostly collect paper money. I do not expect that every time that the term coin collector is used to mean numismatist that a qualifier to include rag pickers be included. I do not mind the term National Coin Week. However, I think that somewhere in such a long news release from the American Coin Collectors’ Association could throw us at least one bone! I know the people involved in creating and distributing these news releases. They are good folks, and they know about paper money and pm collectors. They support and encourage us in many ways. They are also stuck with the N word (numismatics) and must constantly work around it. They also worry that if they specifically mention pm when talking about coin collecting, that they will read letters like this one from token collectors, error collectors, odd and curious collectors (frankly I must be one of them—odd and curious), orders, medal and decoration collectors, literature collectors, and possibly debt collectors. There is some truth in the fear of course, but coins are much more closely related to all (or nearly all) of those than is paper money. Many of us do the things that are mentioned in the news release—give away notes, give presentations at educational , civic, and fraternal organizations. We exhibit at a higher rate than collectors of round things (my not very scientific observation). We publish newsletters and otherwise distribute free literature. Of course we will continue to do these things even without a bone, but it would be nice to have a bone every now and then!
