From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 762 Date: Monday, October 28, 2002 8:37 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 762 Monday Oct 28, 2002 MPC Database over 5000 By Doug Bell The MPC data base at papermoneyworld.net now has over 5000 MPC listed by serial number. Recent enhancements include calculation of value for each note entered—face value AND catalog value that is. Here are the totals: Total 5001 Total Face Value: $9100.25 Total Book Value: $269172 MPC DATA BASE Commentary By Harold “MPCKid” Kroll (I guess its better to be known as an unknown then not to be known at all.) For those of you who have not visited www.papermoneyworld.net and for those who have not been there for some time, you will be in store for quite a few changes and surprises. The changes are quite dramatic from the original site and more are in the works all the time. Douglas Bell, aka MPCWIZZARD, is the webmaster of this site. Doug has devoted many man-hours in construction of this site and when you visit the site you will see what I mean. Access to the site is available to any gramster by contacting Doug and getting a password, (just what everybody needs another password, right) anyway when that is done you will be able to access the site and use it whenever you want. There are several sections to the site and all contain information for the collector. One of the great areas is the MPC DATA BASE. This is where you can list all of the notes in your collection by series, serial number, position number, grade denomination, what your cost was, (this is optional) and a space for comments about each note. As your personal data is being added to the site, it automatically charts the notes you have entered onto a graph showing how may notes you have entered by series and denomination. This is just the beginning what the data base will do for you. As you keep entering your notes, total note count appears along with the catalog value of your collection, plus you have a record of all your notes by serial number if something were to happen with your collection. As the information is being added by other collectors the total note count is available and the total face value of the notes entered and an accumulated catalog value for all notes. Everyone has an individual area for his/her data but it’s all combined to give us this information on total numbers. One of the features with this data base is it will tell you if any serial number you have entered matches another note with the same serial number, any denomination or series. Fred has a real fancy for this section of the data base and rightfully so. The three examples shown in the book I think are the only ones known to date, check out pages 55/56 in the MPC catalog. The 661 25 cent and $20.00 notes were united at Fest 1, the 25 cent note was from the Kevin Maloy collection and the $20.00 note was in Mpckids collection for a time. That is another good story to follow one day. Take some time to view the site and while there add some data from your collection, who knows you may find a match. Doug and I were discussing the website and some new graphics he just installed this evening, that is when he informed that the total number of notes listed just topped 5,000 notes. This inspired me to write this article to make all gramsters/Gramsters (nod to Joe) aware of this website and to use it. I could go on to tell more about other features of the site, but it would take all the fun out of visiting the site for yourself and finding out what is available to you. It's free, what have you got to lose? All of the above is made possible by the countless hours Doug Bell has devoted to building this website. My thanks and praise to Doug. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Five thousand notes in the MPC data base is an important step! We have discussed this research tool in the past, and will keep harping on it because it is a potentially important research tool. Indeed, I have been slow in entering notes from the black hole, but have started a deliberate program to get my notes entered. I am going to enter notes every day and ask Doug to report me when a day passes that I do not enter any! With 5000 (mostly) regular issues at paper moneyworld.net and the replacement data base that I maintain (for more than 25 years) our total recorded notes is close to 8000! How far can we go? Well, we can make an estimate , I think. What do we know? We know that replacements were issued at a rate of about 1% of the total issue. We have 2500 in the replacement data base. As an estimate we can divide 2500 by 1%. That is 250,000. My personal estimate is that although the replacement survey is fairly robust and certainly seasoned, we still should be able to double the 2500 to 5000 in 30 – 50 years. After that, I think that reports will be quite slow. This puts the high estimate of regulars at 500,000. Therefore, it is my estimate that we should be able to record 250000 to 500000 regular issues fairly easily! How many matching numbers can we find in 250,000 notes? How many radars, low numbers and other specials? How many questions can we answer that have not even been formulated yet? I encourage everyone to enter notes in the data base. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, What brand of album and note sleeves do you recommend to keep MPC in? Is there specific types of vinyl that are better in protecting and what size of sheet and number of notes it holds, do you find works best? Regards Bill Dear Bill, Hopefully your subscription is straightened out. If you did not receive this Gram, please write for another! Housing of paper money collections. That is a great question that has not been beaten to death in the Gram. I suspect some readers will have opinions. Fred Dear Gram, The ANA has uploaded a few of the stories from the November Numismatist. One of the articles is entitled "Tributes to Those Who Serve" and talks about various items commemerating the military service (but not about military paper money). The link to the article (a PDF file) is: http://www.money.org/publications/0211_CoverStory.pdf Cheers, Mark "Sparky" Watson Dear Gram, Please add to the Calendar of Events for the Baltimore Show in November after "Len Harsel has a table"; "Howard Daniel has a joint NI/IBNS meeting at 3PM on Nov 9. Gramsters are invited to bring something for show & tell and to network with other Gramsters." Howard Dear Howard, Son of a gun, I just checked and the show has been listed for weeks (or months)! Sometimes we surprise ourselves! But, that’s OK, keep sending us your goodies.
