From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 763 Date: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 11:06 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 763 Tuesday Oct 29, 2002 MPC Database has record day The MPC data base had more entries yesterday than any day since its creation. Nearly 1000 notes were entered. Based upon a few reports, collectors intend to keep up this pace! At this rate we can expect to see 10,000 listings in just a few weeks and a catalog value or half a million—or possibly a million—dollars sooner than that. Expect to see frequent updates of the progress of the reports here and, hopefully, in the print media in the future. Here is the link directly to the log in page for the data base: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/user Another propaganda note By Joe Boling Here's one I had not noticed before. I'm sure that at some time I had read the description in R G Auckland's 1972 booklet (Air-Dropped Propaganda Currency), but I don't remember ever seeing the note or any other mention of it. It's the back of a Soviet 100 ruble note (P231/232--the two Pick numbers are only distinguishable on the face), printed in dull green, with a long text in black Cyrillic on the other side. It was prepared by an anti-Soviet organization known as the Narodno-Tridovogo Soyuza (NTS). Its logo is a very plain trident, leading me to believe that it was composed of mostly Ukrainian dissidents. According to Auckland (where the notes appear on pages 37-38--there is also a 25 ruble denomination illustrated), the notes were floated into East Germany targeting Soviet troops stationed there, and into the USSR homeland from other countries "in places other than Europe." One balloon carrying 300 kilos of leaflets allegedly got as far as Moscow before dropping its load. So, what's "other than Europe?" Turkey, Iran, India, and South Korea all come to mind, but the only ones that might reach Moscow (if the winds would support it) are Turkey and Iran. I wonder if the "other than Europe" was a claim to keep the actual countries (such as Finland or Sweden?) out of the limelight. I checked the IBNS Journal (for the thirty years that have been indexed) and found no article about these notes (tell me where I have missed it, Herb). I was offered this one by Simon Narbeth when I was in his shop before the IBNS London convention; I bought it for ninety pounds. Expensive, but there are not many cold war propaganda pieces available. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== It was exciting the way Gramsters responded to yesterdays news and editorial items about the MPC data base. Doug Bell has done a lot of work on the data base and it is going to be a good thing for all of us. Last night I was one of many who entered some numbers. I actually found it to be fun! Doug has included some features that I did not know about. When you enter a serial number, the data base determines from what printing it came (for series with more than one). That information is then used in evaluating the note. The data base calculates the total face value and total catalog value for each user and for the data base overall. At this time, this function must be updated by the web master. Your values will not show up as you put them in, but will normally be there later the same day. Doug expects to have another sum added soon. That will be the total of your purchase price. Doug and I are creating a master list of enhancements for the DB. Please send those in to the Gram for discussion and implementation. When we get enough suggestions, and enough money to pay the programmer, we will get them done! In an unprecedented move, for the Gramster making the entry, Gram subscriptions will be extended one issue for every certificate entered ! Enter 100 notes and receive an additional 100 free Grams! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, But you did not do what he [Howard] asked you to do, namely ALSO put in, after the Harsel comment, that Howard will be hosting a meeting and that he wants people to bring show and tell items. Joe Dear Gram, Howard didn't want the show listed, he wanted ADDITIONAL INFORMATION added, as he stated. Have a great day! Don Dear Gramsters, I learned a long time ago in publishing that when you make a mistake, you label it as a feature! Editor Hello Gramsters and Bill! About housing "ones" collection. Well I prefer "Lighthouse Binder 3 or 4 ring (now I grew into a 4 ring) "stamp/currency binder plus "dust cover" runs about $25+ from dealer, with a break in price? Comes in green and black. The pages are lighthouse "Vario 4C" and "Vario 3C" CLEAR,(for viewing both sides). They run about $5+ per pack of 5. I house 700+ pieces in the "wide" binder 4 ring. They 3 ring worked fine until you pass 300+ pieces and house many notes per slot. I collect multiple printings, replacements etc. so I use "Denly's mylar/ thin holders" fractional, colonial size (for $5 size) and standard U.S. small size for $10 and $20 notes. You can have 4 sleves, let's say, for 4 printings of a #481 5 cent multiple printing, and a sleve for a replacement. All (5) can fit into one pocket per page. For instance, page one, 4 pocket - 5 cent through 50 cent, second page is 3 pocket, the $1 , $5 $10. The $20 requires another 3 pocket page or?. I lable my pages with a "Brother P-touch" hand held printer. $30+ label roll $10. Makes a beautiful display, clean and 100% protective from most conditions. Store in a cool dry "safe" (doesn't hurt to bolt a safe to the floor from the inside!) or safety deposit box, use a moisture absorber "packs that come in electronic equipment" etc., or sold by coin supply companies. Others may prefer the other brands of currency set-ups out there! Hope this helps. Goodluck, Guy Araby! ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 Paper Money Convention IBNS Sydney & Melbourne Chapters 2/3 November 2002 Artarmon Motor Inn, Sydney Australia Contact Tony James wk. 61 2 9235 0888 fax. 61 2 9235 0588 email:- info@tonyjamesnoteworld.biz Come on escape the Winter in the north and see the Land Down Under.
