From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 765 Date: Thursday, October 31, 2002 11:10 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 765 Thurski Oct 31, 2002 WWII Exhibit at Show THIS Weekend By Marcus Turner This weekend the Indiana State Numismatic Association will hold its annual coin show and convention. It will be held on November 1st & 2nd at the Indianapolis Marriott located at 7202 East 21st Street (very close to where I-70 and I-465 intersect on the east side of Indianapolis). The show will be open to the public Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm and on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Traditionally there have been several Gramsters that attend this show. DON’T LEAVE YOUR CHALLENGE COINS AT HOME! This year I will have my collection of Soviet World War II bonds and lottery tickets on exhibit at the show. This is the same exhibit that I had in Memphis but with some significant improvements. ISNA was kind enough to let me expand the exhibit to seven cases, allowing for additions of some recent discoveries. First is the addition is the 1943 10 aksha (ruble) bond from Tannu Tuva (see S/B page 370). This is the only issued piece of any denomination identified to date. There is also an entire case dedicated to the recently discovered Soviet/Swedish intergovernmental loans (bonds) of 1940 (thanks to fellow Gramster Mikhail Istomin of the Ukraine for providing information on these bonds). I will be at the show over my lunch break on Friday and all day on Saturday. Please stop by and visit. Chit Chat By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski Last week I received an email from fellow Fester and Gramster Tom Koch. Tom had picked up a couple of POW chits and even the booklet cover from which they originated and he wanted to find out where they were from and the history of the camp. You see the location was "HARBOR DEFENSES OF NARRAGANSETT BAY". Tom had done a search on the Internet and found a site for the history of Fort Wetherill in Rhode Island. The site indicated that Fort Wetherill was once a training center for the indoctrination of German POW's who displayed anti-Nazi feelings and were considered good prospects for becoming the leadership of rebuilt Germany. Tom wondered if these chits could have been used at Fort Wetherill. The chit book cover and the chits as well as the internal receipt can be seen at the link www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/thurski103002.htm I was familiar with the chits from the Harbor Defenses of Narragansett Bay (in fact I had a set with the same serial number that came from the same booklet) and had done some research on them for my upcoming book on POW chits. From our high school geography classes, we remember that Narragansett Bay is the large body of water on the eastern side of Rhode Island south of Providence. And I was also familiar with Fort Wetherill as being a sub camp of Fort Getty. There were two main POW camps in Rhode Island, Forts Getty and Kearney and just one sub camp, that at Fort Wetherill. So after doing a little more research to answer Tom's question, I asked if I could use his question as a Thurski topic and pass it on to the rest of the Gramsters who would probably share our interests. He agreed Actually the coastal or Harbor Defenses of Narragansett Bay consisted of six forts, Fort Adams, the command location, and Forts Getty, Nathaniel Greene, Church, Wetherill and Kearney. In late 1944, the Army established a secret program at a CCC camp near Van Etten, New York to train carefully selected German prisoners and some aliens for service as administrators and police in the soon-to-be established U.S. Army Government of Occupation in Germany. The program was officially known as the "Intellectual Diversion Program" to conform to language in the Geneva Convention governing the care of prisoners of war and to disguise its real purpose. The Geneva Convention did not cover the treatment of POWs with regard to this subject but the Americans wanted to keep their actions secret for fear of Germany retaliation against American POW's. The program was moved to Fort Kearney in March of 1945 where the initial phase of the program was very successful and led to an expansion of the program with inclusion of nearby Forts Getty and Wetherill. Fort Getty was used to train Administrators and Wetherill trained police. Many of the POW's selected were college graduates or had had experience in business or as civil servants in Germany. All were from western Germany because the Soviets, who would occupy eastern Germany had demanded that all German POW's be returned to their home areas. Several of the members of the test program were retained as instructors for those who followed. Later this program moved to Fort Eustis, Virginia where all activities were consolidated. Fort Wetherill operated only from August thru November of 1945, Fort Getty from July 1945 thru February of 1946. Fort Kearney was the camp with the greatest longevity opening in March of 1944 and closing in March of 1946. Therefore, I feel certain that the three camps referred to here all used the type chits from the chit book reported by Tom Koch and shown in the link. Notice however, that the booklet cover has a issued date of 1 February 1946, and an expiration date of 31 March 1946. That's a short two month validity period and Fort Wetherill had already closed and Fort Getty was in the process of closing. So, Fort Kearney prisoners were the primary users. Also notice that the booklet is listed as series 6 and there are large sixes on each chit. This could mean that there are at least five other series out there that we haven't found yet. The three Forts probably used an earlier series booklet probably Series 5. Some of these earlier series maybe designated only from Fort Kearney and have longer validity periods as the other two locations didn't house POW's until mid 1945. Who knows? Thanks Tom, for a great question. I think we answered some of it, but left the door open on other parts. It sure helps me find a topic when I know what your interested in as Tom has done here. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== The pace of MPC news and (especially) Gram submissions is tremendous. This is wonderful. As you can imagine, I have lots to say on many of these topics, but I am going to exercise uncommon restraint and try to let some of these issue play themselves out here in the Gram. So, you see, in spite of the wealth of material, we still want your opinion on these matters! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, What a spectacular donation to the ANA. Congratulatins to the ANA museum and “Thank You” to Mr. 691 or whomever (sure wish that I were a nonprofit museum so that I might get such a donation!). Regarding the MPC donations to the ANA, it would probably be beneficial to create a table on papermoneyworld showing the current set with grades along with instructions on where to send the donations. Cheers, Mark "Sparky" Watson Dear Sparky, Yes, we will certainly maintain a full time and uptodate collection listing at PMW. Possibly we will run it in the Gram every day! If not every day, frequently. Almost certainly we will have a new museum collection column! Editor Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I gave up on storing my Southeast Asian collection in binders because it is so large and I could not fit any more of them in the two large fireproof safes in my house. So I use archival rated storage boxes for paper and coins. An excellent source of these boxes is University Products. I use their Archival Video Box (735-1555) for paper collections and Intercept Shield Boxes (034-4116) for my coin/token collections, and use regular boxes for duplicates. They also have 5-1/8x8" Sovereign Archival Mylar holders (565-3582) for paper, and they have several coin holders. Please check with your local and favorite national dealer(s) for other Mylar holders. My favorite coin holders are "Saflip" double-pocket flips for my coins from E&T Kointainer, P.O. Box 103, Sidney, OH 45365, and most numismatic stores have them. They also have some boxes that are "pretty" good, but not archival quality, that might be more in your price range. University Products also has albums and many other storage products, so I would recommend requesting their catalog from their website at "www.universityproducts.com". Other excellent catalogs with many storage options are from Light Impressions at "www.lightimpressionsdirect.com", and Century Business Solutions Office & Photo Organizers at "www.centurybusinesssolutions.com". My safes were bought from a local "hunters/gun/bow" store. When the Vietnam War veteran-owner saw "Viet Nam" on my baseball cap, he left his other customers and served me. We talked for quite awhile and he is now looking for MPC somewhere in his house! He sold me my two large fireproof safes at $50. over his cost (saving me $500+!), and he had two friends with the right equipment deliver and place them in my house for a small charge. I highly recommend finding a veteran who owns a store that sells Liberty Safes and make a new MPC friend. Please remember that after you purchase a piece for your collection, it is not a minor task to store it. You must correctly store it or it will not be as you bought it many years (poor products can cause problems in months!) in the past. You can contact me at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com, if you have any questions. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Gramsters, Please be advised - the telephone number for Philip M. Goldstein has changed once again - hopefully this will be the LAST change - as I finally moved into my house. As I plan on eventually dying in this house, I don't expect to inconvenience all of you to change my phone number again. Please update your address books, telephone auto dialers, etc.. For now, all mail and written correspondence can continue to be sent to my P.O. Box. My physical address is available upon request. New Telephone Number: (845) 586-4672 - which reads as (845) 586-4MPC Philip M.
