On Friday night the Denver Area World Numismatists will have their monthly meeting. DAWN (despite this moniker we meet in the evening) is a very relaxed "coin club" which meets at a local American Legion Hall. There are no dues nor officers. The first time you attend you are a guest, after that you are a life member. Life members are asked to contribute $1 to each meeting (you are on the honor system). Trading is encouraged, there is a cash bar. I am supposed to give the program for December but if a Gramster wants to volunteer I would be happy to step aside (Fred or Joe are you raising your hand). Contact me for details. Also on Sunday December 8th the (almost) bi-monthly Sunday coin show will take place at the Holiday Inn on Colorado Blvd. in Denver. I will be set up and usually I see a from MPC notes in dealer cases. In spite of that little disappointment, he has made a wonderful suggestion and offer. These additional numismatic opportunities make the weekend into a real event. Furthermore, this is about the time when we need to get serious about plans for the weekend. I am still undecided. I want to attend, but have some minor complications. As Warner Talso would (and did) say. I am working on my kitchen pass. As soon as you can decide that you will attend, please tell us so that we can share that fact with other Gramsters. Experience tells us that once a few Gramsters start signing on, others will follow. As you can see, it relates the use of MPC by the Australians and the fact that they were paid in AUS$ and had to convert. Contacting these "blokes" should be a good lead to other information about the Australian MPC connection. Back in the late 60’s, an Australian dollar bought US$1.15, (things have changed) and all pays were first converted into Yankee dollars then made in MPC (Military Payment Certificate) which was a kind of Monopoly money used by the US armed forces as a means of keeping down black market activities. It didn’t, but that was its purpose. Most blokes quickly discovered that you could buy just about anything "down town" for a carton of Salem cigarettes(green gold), or a couple of cakes of Lux soap-you didn’t need money.
