From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 767 Date: Sunday, November 03, 2002 9:18 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 767 Sunday November 3, 2002 "Plate Variations" on MPC By Guy M. Araby I am reporting my findings based on a study comparing several hundred uncirculated MPC notes. While examining several examples of a given series, I would find and occasional note that is slightly "longer" or "shorter" in height or width on either face or back, or both sides. Frame lines, not "margins." Even found this phenomena on some consecutive groups of uncirculated 1935 $1 Hawaii overprints. There are several examples throughout virtually all the series. One of the more dramatic examples I found is that of series #541 $1. Out of 3 pieces (one graded CGC 65) two are exactly the same measurements. Face and back, left to right, top to bottom. On the third example, the face (face) horizonal measurements are 1/16th + inch "wider" face and back!. Inner frame lines, not "margins"! Also the note from top to bottem is also "narrower" than the other 2 examples. I also have a #461 5 cent, 25 cent, $10 with similar differences. And often the backs are exactly the same size (proving that the paper has not shrunk or stretched etc.) Another random comparison is that of series #681 $5, I have 6 pieces, gems. One of the 6 is shorter, left to right by 1/16th inch. The other 5 pieces are exactly the same size. I have decided to catagorize them by abbreviations. (NHF/F) narrow horizonal frame , face. (WHF/F) wide horizonal frame, face. (TVF/F) tall/ vertical frame / face and (SVF/F) short vertical frame / face. The same abbreviations for the "back" replacing "f" with "B". And may be a combination of both. Mules probably exist. Dean Oakes has similar wide and narrow examples mentioned for the 1928 legal tender issues and the 1934 silver certs. Some unusual findings are that this phenomena is not consistent to either wide or narrow because it also occurs "tall and short" without effecting the "back design" in most cases at all. Therefore one may conclude "different plates" exist for these "singular printing" notes. I could explain it if the case involved stamps. As a philatelist, we know about "rotary" verses "flat press" operations, which causes the same design to "stretch" in length or height because of die transfer to the rollers. But MPC is printed "flat press" (lithography). Perhaps this can be explained with actual documented serial # recordings like the research on multiple printings etc. Anyway, I wanted to report my findings as I am fully confident that this is a real and important variety/ variation and a new way to collect MPC! I also spoke to David Seelye briefly about this a month or so ago and he also "noticed" this phenomena also! Anyone willing to do some comparisons of there own and report there findings should prove interesting. I wonder if anyone else has done similar research?? ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We have had two requests (ok, three) for information on registering for the Fest. Yes, it is that time again. We should start pushing the Fest. We want to break 40 Festers this time (possibly 50), so we need to get to work. The bottom line is to get registered, send your “reservation” to the Gram. A simple “I’ll be there will suffice.” Once you have registered, your name will be added to the Fest list published every day in the Gram. Once you have paid the registration fee a $$ will be placed by your name. If you have registered, please check the list to be sure that we have you listed. The modest registration fee of $149 (US) will be due Jan 1, 2003. All traditional means of payment will be accepted (including PayPal). The fee includes meals Friday evening through Sunday noon, two nights lodging (double occupancy), participation in all events. Based upon previous Fests there will be many souvenirs of the Fest provided by Fest administration AND Festers. There are no guarantees on those items, BUT Marcus Turner has reported that Mr. 691 has again promised a very interesting item for everyone who attends the Fest. We hope to see you there, er here. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, Siccccnce you listed a Gramster as having a table at the Baltmore show I would like to remind you that I will have a table at the FUN show and would love to see any and all Gramsters. Hi Guys - Boy I am sure I have missed so much business because of the enept work of the Gram staff that I am sure I will have to "sue" all of youand that includes the editor, the editor and the editor. I am sure that "The Boss" would not have made this mistake. My phone number in the Hot Contacts list is WRONG. How about a correction? You have it as 720-0659. Who ever did this must have dislectia. The correct number is 720-0695. Thanks for the correction. The Paymaster Paymaster Dear Steamed Editor, Regarding the offer of the 10 Lire AMC with Bogart signature, I have a similar signature I located on a small Italian note in used condition of the World War II period. Scott Winslow authenticated it for me, stating in his letter that such a signature is quite scarce and worth in the neighborhood of $800 to $1000. Mine came for a lot less, though not for a full junk box price I assure you! The first serial number listed is obviously in error as a nine digit number: C040351392C Correct Serial Number is: C04035139C D Freyser (date listed 10 April 2002) Page 207, #833/4 - Series 481 .25 4th Printing (table listing serial number breakdowns) line 5 Start Number is incorrect. It appears as: (start) D14784001D(end) D14784000D Correct start number should be: D09408001D PK6 (date listed: 03 APRIL 2002) Page 214, #855/r2 - Series 541 $1 Replacements, Ending serial number is incorrect Correct number is F1112000 (date listed: 02 APRIL 2002) Page 220, #884/2r - Series 641 .50 Replacements On page 284, it is broken down into 2 printings. That's correct, BUT, on page 220 he lists only (1) printing reported. It should "list" both first and second printings. Guy Araby (date listed 04 APRIL 2002) Page 287, Series 661 Series Summary, 25 cent note: the "list" shows "#CU as 10(7) . It should read, 8(7). As only 8 are known in CU. Just recount P.289. Guy Araby (date listed 08 APRIL 2002) Page 398, Series #541 $10 on "UNC." price is $2500, on P.214 the UNC. price is $3500. Also the rest of the prices don't match all the way to "VG" on this issue. They should be the same price. Guy Araby (date listed 08 APRIL 2002) =================================================== MPC Gram Staff: Publisher: Fred Schwan - MPCGram@yahoo.com Editor: Philip M.
