By Jay Jackson As long as the subject of printing 'variations' is on the table, has anyone noticed that on the WWII Hawaii $20's that the words 'Hawaii' on the face of the note are some times closer toward the middle of the note than on others? In my experience [limited as it is], I've seen these words as much as 3/8" closer together on some notes than others. I detect it by the placement of the word in relation to the outer frame of the design. Anyone have any ideas as to how many different overprinting plates were used? I haven't noticed this 'variation' on the 1's, 5's or 10's. Indiana State Show By Marvin Mericle Just returned from the Indiana State Numismatic Association (ISNA) show held the past two days. Was a great show, but more important, were the exhibits. Marcus Turner took First Place in the senior class/division. If you have not seen his exhibit yet, do so! Hopefully he will be exhibiting it at more shows around the country. As he stated in an earlier gram, he expanded it to seven cases. If you have not knowledgeable about Russian War bonds, get a quick lesson on them by viewing his exhibit. Not only is it educational, well written, and neat, but you get to view some very very rare pieces. Congratulations to Marcus For A Fine Exhibit. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Late last year or early this year we discussed United States Patriot bonds at some length. I was interested in these in the same way that I am interested in World War II defense and war bonds. Eventually, I purchased a few of the Series EE Patriot bonds. If you have read WWII Remembered very carefully, you will find mention of Series F and G bonds that were sold at the same time as the Series E bonds. There are many mysteries about the F and G bonds. After I satisfied my curiosity about the Series E Patriot bonds, I started to wonder about the corresponding Series HH bonds currently being sold so I set out to purchase a Series HH bond for my “collection.” This is my story. On approximately 17 October I visited the local bank (part of a national chain) where I received above average service from a customer service representative whom I will call Rep. The next day I returned for the purpose of purchasing a United States bond Series HH. I had researched the requirement for purchasing such a bond on the Internet. I knew that it could be purchased only in conjunction with the redemption of Series E or EE bonds that were at least six months old. I also knew that I could add up to $499.99 to the exchange to increase the denomination of the bond purchased. I had some bonds and $500. I was greeted cordially by Rep. I explained what I wanted. She told me that the EE bonds must be matured. I told her that I thought that she was mistaken. When she insisted. I asked he to let me see a copy of the blank form required for such a transaction. She refused. Yes, she refused to show me a blank form! She offered to give me a toll free number to call to inquire about this. I asked her to call the number, but she said no. As you can imagine, I was frustrated to say the least. I left the bank. I went home, got on the Internet (www.usbonds.gov), and copied the appropriate page. Then I returned to the bank. I again went to the office of Rep. Even though I was angry, I was happy to have the proof in my hands. She read the extract , but did not agree with my interpretation. She said most importantly that she would not issue the bond. I was amazed, but left again. Within a few minutes of departing, I read the documents again. The first requirement was that the redeemed bond be at least six months old. Since this clearly indicated that the bond need not be matured, and since we had not discussed that particular line, I returned to the bank and to Ryan’s office. She did not agree with my interpretation on this point either. However, she did agree to make the call to a higher authority. I sat while she called. I listened while she talked and asked the wrong questions. Without giving me an opportunity to either talk to the person or suggest a question for her to ask, she hung up. She said, see, I told you. I left again. I could not spend any more time on this project that day. On approximately, October 24, I went to a competing bank. I asked a customer service person there to help me. Ultimately, she gave me a copy of the application form. In the first two lines of the first paragraph of the form it states that the bond to be redeemed need not be matured. I was amazed that it was stated so clearly. I was also angered that I had not been allowed such a form on my first visit to Key bank on this matter. I took the form to the local bank from the national chain and to Rep. She told me that I owed her an apology for my rude behavior (more thereon below). I showed Ryan the form. She studied the passage in question. She said “I suppose that I owe you an apology.” Amazingly, she went on to say, that she would not sell me the bond because it was the way she had always done it. The statement about an apology indicates that she understood the requirements, but still choose to refuse to provide the service. I was beside myself with frustration. I then asked Rep to sign the form simply stating that she refused to issue a bond. Not very surprisingly, she refused to do that as well. I went to the competing bank. The same person helped me and in a few minutes we completed the transaction. The person stated that it was the fist time that she had ever provided exactly this transaction for anyone, but she took a positive attitude and simply followed the instructions. Ryan is correct. I do owe her an apology for my less than cordial behavior. However, I want to point out that I never called her a name or used four language. I did not shout nor raise my voice more than slightly. I did get upset, even angry. I will in fact offer my apology to an appropriate high officer of the corporation. I am pursuing redress from corporate headquarters for my inconvenience. In the mean time I am looking forward to receipt of the HH bond. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, You mentioned the fee for Fest IV is $141.00 for double Occupancy in Gram 767. You didn't mention single occupancy which I am not sure what it cost last year. Is the single occupancy rooms going to be available? Thanks , hope to see you at Fest IV. Wes Hardy Dear Wes, Thanks you make a good point. I nearly forgot about the single occupancy. Heck, I DID forget. I also put the wrong double occupancy prcie if I put $141. Let’s try again. $148 double occupancy, $198 single occupancy. ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention, November 7-10 2002.
