From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 770 Date: Wednesday, November 06, 2002 1:30 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 770 Wednesday November 6, 2002 H A W A I I Spacing By Pete Huntoon I respectfully beg to differ with the interpretation given by Fred Bart for the cause of the spacing variations on the Hawaii overprints on the faces of the WW II Hawaii notes. I too have observed great variation in the spacings of the surcharges as pointed out by Jay Jackson, especially on the $20s. My bias toward the $20s is probably based solely on having seen large numbers of 20s together, a distinction not afforded the other denominations which I get to see only a few at a time. The variations noted by Jay are documented in the seminal article on Hawaii notes by Simek and Medcalf in the December 2001 The Numistmatist. See the photo of the $20s on page 1410. The variations cannot be explained by paper shrinkage because it is too great. It cannot be a function of "using Series of 1929" presses either. The overprints on 1929 notes - both national and federal reserve - were made from logotype plates. These are photo litho plates, not movable type set-up-plates where lines of type fit into specified slots or jigs. Thus the small HAWAII's on the faces did not occupy the charter number slots as speculated by Fred. (Notice that charter numbers on 1929 nationals also wander all over the place!) What Jay has observed is variation between different logotype plates. This is exactly the same type of variation that occurs in any print shop between the manufacture of successive printing plates. What would be valuable to learn from a nit picky point of view is how the variations changed through time. Specifically, are there several odd spacings within and confined to the initial, huge, rush production of the notes in June 1942, when emphasis was on cranking out notes in a hurry and not so much on quality control; and if so, do they become standardized when the heat was off? Conversely, do the odd spacings occur later in the series as new, shorter production runs were called for and new overprinting plates had to be made, sometimes without carefully checking what went before? It could go either way, or more likely both ways! I haven't compiled such data because the spacings seemed like a minor issue, and until now no one seemed interested. Fred Bart’s desire to tie the Hawaii printings to "1929 presses" based on brown seal color is problematic as well because the presses don't dictate seal color, that is dictated by the color ink someone pours in the ink well. Basically, the concept in a print shop is a press is a press. They are built to handle different plates (or seals) or whatever. They are quite versatile. In the cases at hand, we simply are looking at variations in the plates put on the same old presses. I am uncertain what technology was used to overprint the Hawaii faces. Specifically, on the 1935A $1s, was the black logotype made with all the black elements: series, treasury signatures and Hawaii's, or were the Hawaii's added in a separate press run? No logotype plate proofs exist from the Hawaii printings in the BEP proofs in the Smithsonian to offer clues. Note, the $1 Series of 1935A overprints were probably made on newly introduced two-color overprinting presses, brown for the serials and seals, and black for the Hawaii's, series and treasury signatures. However, the standard green seal $5 and higher feds required only a one-color press - green - because the series, treasury signatures and district discriminators were on the intaglio faces plates, not overprint logotype plates. This leads to the interesting possibility that the $5 and higher Hawaii's were printed using the same two-color presses as the $1s with the only black elements involved being the Hawaii's. Or, the $5 and higher Hawaii's may have required two overprintings: one for the brown seal and serials, the other for the Hawaii's. Some shift errors would greatly inform our deductions. Tell us what you see on them. OKC Show Report Bruce Potter I traveled to Oklahoma City for coin show on Saturday. This is the first time that I have attended this show (formerly held at Norman). It was a superb show with numerous dealers and while it WAS raining outside all day long...the attendance by the public was great!! While practically all fields of numismatics was available....I spent most of my time viewing paper money. There were several dealers with MPC notes. I did obtain several beautiful Philippine notes (pre WWII) and a few MPC notes for various people. I did purchase a Series 521, 50 cent note (VF), 3rd printing at a reasonable price. It was a great show except for the lack of exhibits/displays. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== We have received a few nominations for “favorite note.” They will be published as soon as the South Dakota (or possibly Louisania) senate seats are decided. That means that you can still send us your candidate for favorite note. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, The recent discussion about the Hawaii overprint currency got me to reading more about their use. In WWII Remembered (p430) it mentioned that these notes were used in some other operations in the Pacific. And, in Military Money, by Walter Rundell (p120) it specifies that "the first use of Hawaiian dollars as invasion currency was in the Gilbert Islands operation of November 1943. Thereafter, the overstamped series was used in all Central Pacific campaigns through the invasion of the Palau Islands in September 1944". It was in November 1944, after the danger of Japanese aggression in the Central Pacific had passed, that the restrictions on these notes was lifted. David Klinger Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I went to my nearest branch of Bank of America a few years ago in Northern Virginia to conduct a financial transaction. I did not see the Assistant Manager who regularly took care of me so I sat down at the desk of Customer Service (?) Representative. After struggling with her for about ten minutes, I asked for the Assistant Manager and was told that she was transferred to another branch about two miles away. I thanked her and drove to that branch. I was warmly greeted by my regular bank lady and she accomplished my financial transaction without a word in about ten minutes. After thanking her, I asked why she had been transferred and she replied that she was here to train another college graduate to be promoted past her. When I returned home, I was still irritated about her situation, so I dug out the annual report for the bank from my investment file and wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Board about how great this lady was and that she deserved her own bank branch. About a month later, I walked into her bank to conduct some regular business and she signaled me to come to her desk. I walked over and she started chewing on me about how bad a person I was! Then she explained that she went to a large training session in Baltimore and the Chairman of the Board was there. He read my letter to the entire gathering then called her from the audience and announced that she was being promoted to VP to manage a new branch under construction in a community near Leesburg, Virginia. She told me that she almost fainted before she could stand up and walk to the stage. I have made it a habit to recognize good people when I realize that I have gotten better than normal service, and I always write to the absolute top person in the corporation. The sad thing is that they are always promoted and leave me, but I eventually find another person to take care of me until I realize they are also extraordinary too. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Gram, I did not seem to receive a Gram 766. Was it sent? Bill R. Dear Bill, Yes, it was sent and I believe that it was even on time.
