From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 772 Date: Friday, November 08, 2002 8:01 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 003 - Number 772 Friday November 8, 2002 Million Dollar MPC! By Doug Bell The papermoneyworld data base of military payment certificates passed two significant milestones this week when the 7000th note was entered and only a few notes later the million dollar threshold was passed. The data base is a research tool for collectors and anyone else interested in MPC. Collectors are invited to add notes they own or have seen to the database. The pertinent research information—identification, serial and position numbers, and condition—are available for everyone to use. Additional information regarding purchase price and other “personal” data can be entered but is available only to the person who entered it. After the data are entered, the data base calculates the face value and catalog value of the notes. This information is then available to the individual and the general collecting public. The values currently in the data base are from the new edition of Schwan’s Comprehensive Catalog of MPC. One of the beauties of this approach is that as values change, they can be adjusted in the data bases’ look up tables after which all values in the data base can be updated. The million dollar threshold was passed when collector Harold Kroll entered a Series 481 $1 from the fourth printing. In addition to research opportunities, the data base provides many other benefits. A collector can use the data base as a permanent record of purchases (and sales). This then also fulfills a security function. The list can be a virtual collection want list available to the collector just about anytime from anywhere. If the collector wishes to make the information public, the list then also functions as a want list that can be viewed by collectors or dealers with orphans looking for a home. More enhancements to the database are either being installed or are in preparation. Users with questions or comments are invited to write to me at doug@papermoneyworld.net. You can access the data base directly at this address: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/user/default.asp ============================================== Editorial ============================================== How high can we go? As exciting as the report from Doug is about the data base, it seems something like a sports record. We got to this level after only a few weeks of “pushing.” We should be able to do better quickly. When will be pass $5,000,000 or 10,000 notes or even 100,000 or 500,000 notes! I do not think that I will see one million notes, but records are certainly made to be broken. Doug is secretly talking about creating more data bases for entering other kinds of military money. He has some great ideas and I think that we will see another data base started soon and possibly several more fairly soon! While the data base interface and other technical features are not [yet] perfect, Doug is working on those things and I must tell you something else. I actually enjoyed entering notes. It was an excuse to play with my friends and I had a sense of satisfaction as I worked on it. I still have a way to go, but I look forward to getting back to the task. If you have not tried it, I hope that you will. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram I may not be the first to ask, but did Ski confuse his cm and mm in his item on the Lethbridge camp and Canadian POW tokens or did those nasty Canadians really lumber the poor POW's with tokens weighing many kilograms? Gramme A Regarding MPCGram numbers and their relation to other items, 775 is the tail number for the first C-141A to roll out. Actual serial number is 61-2775, but most people just refer to the last three digits. Cheers, Mark "Sparky" Watson Dear Sparky, Oh no. There probably is no end to this possibility. Editor Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, We all are regularly "warned" about a new virus or something else to do to our computers. In the October 28, 2002 issue of "eWeek" newspaper in their "Spencer F. Katt: Rumor Central" column, it describes the "www.urbanlegends.about.com" website. I checked them out and it has many other interesting items, but it does list viruses that are real and scams. This is definitely a site which should keep in our Outlook and/or bookmark, so we can check when the situation warrants it. FYI. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, You did not tell us what the urban legends site said about 651 fractional replacements or Series 701 specimen books!
