From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 774 Date: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 10:35 PM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 774 Tuesday November 12, 2002 Gram Completes Another Successful Year MPCGram completed its third year of publication yesterday, 11/11—Veterans Day. Actually, that day is the ceremonial day when a new publication year starts. In the case of the Gram, a year is called a series. Integrating theater and military money By Joe Boling This is my second anniversary column; the first was 14 November 2000. Fred has been with me for three days (departing in a couple of hours). We had an adventure Saturday night. Some of you know that I am an obsessive theater-goer. I had five plays and a reading on my calendar Friday-Monday, and went to all but one. Saturday afternoon and evening, while THE BOSS recovered from her jet lag, Fred and I went to two of them. The second is titled "One Red Flower: Letters from 'Nam." It is a rock musical, adapted by Paris Barclay from the book "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam" (Bernard Edelman, ed.). Barclay is a two-time Emmy-winner for direction; he has directed episodes of most of the significant television series on the networks today. He also wrote the music and the connective text for "One Red Flower." Because this piece is still in development, he has been out here during the production, tweaking details with the musicians and the actors. There is a cast of six men and one woman (who plays the mother of one of the men). During the course of the play, three of the men die and one becomes a POW; the action covers April 1969-April 1970 (letters were selected from the book to cover these dates, and edited together to accommodate the six soldiers and one mother). Following the Saturday performance, there was a talkback session with Barclay, the director (Ron OJ Parson), the music director (Jo Lynn Burks), all of the actors, and as many audience members as chose to stick around. Many in the audience were curious about the VN experience. Right in front of Fred and me were nine teenagers, four of whom had already seen the show, and brought five friends back to see it again. Of course, none of the actors is a VN vet (or apparently any later war); they were not even born yet in 1970. Even the production people had not been there (only Parson is old enough, and he had a high lottery number). So in some cases others from the audience answered the questions, which interested the company members as much as the other listeners. These folks seem very interested in getting the details right, so they were receptive to Fred's and my observations about uniform insignia, TA-50 equipment, and so forth. And money. There is no mention of money in the script, but there is a perfect place to use some--a bar scene with a song titled "Saigon tea." So I hustled out to the car, where I always have a carton of mixed BNR Press products, and brought in a 4th edition MPC book to show Mr. Barclay what kind of money would have been used in VN during this action. Fred autographed the book and donated it to the production. When we told Barclay about commonly available sets of reproductions of MPC, he was eager to obtain some and to use it. So next day, after my matinee in Federal Way, I drove back over to Issaquah and delivered two sets of Chambliss notes, a crossed-rifle patch for their lieutenant's uniform, and written commentary about other details that need attention. Mr. Barclay said he would definitely use the MPC, though I don't know if it will get integrated during this run (the show closes here this week). But if he follows through, we will have struck a blow for recognition of MPC among a wide audience. Certainly, any vets who see it in the show in the future will recognize it and perhaps have their interest kindled in re-learning what they have forgotten about it. Watch for this show to appear near you; if you see it, let us know whether any MPC are included in the action. Those interested in reading what I said about the performance we saw, or about any of the other 400 shows I am seeing this year, can read my daily reviews at www.tpsonline.org; click on "community," then on "message boards." Our year is from Veterans Day to Veterans Day and each year is called a series so we have started Series 4. These little twists were ideas of Brad Peacock. By the time that Series 5 starts, we should be well over 1000 Grams. That is another day that I look forward to. If you have been watching the national news carefully, you know that Port Clinton, Gram and Fest HQ was hit by tornadoes on Sunday. Fortunately neither HQ building was hit, no one was seriously hurt in the entire town. This is by far the best excuse I have ever had to miss a Gram or two, but Joe blew my cover. Yes, I spent a few days at Joe’s on “family” business. Possibly I mentioned that on Saturday. Anyway, you can tell from his report that we had a good time. We also got some brainstorming and other work done on some publishing projects. We will refrain from the trick of many publications of calling this a double issue and thereby cheating you of an issue. We will extend everyone’s subscription by two copies for the two unfortunate misses. I will have some more comments on the visit with Joe tomorrow. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, The Fort Worth (Texas for those of you that don't know) 41st coin show was held at the Amon G.Carter exhibition hall on Nov. 9th and 10th. Only two dealers that I found had MPC. I bought a 661 $20 in XF from one and three notes from the other. One of interest is a 541 .05 in VG with a shifted position number. It is position 13 and the 3 is a little into the scroll work next to the vingnette. It is an error but not a real dramatic one. Next report from the Grapevine, TX show in two weeks. Bill McNease Hi!
