From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 776 Date: Thursday, November 14, 2002 11:29 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 776 Thurski November 14, 2002 BNR 25 Years Ago and other goodies By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski The Banknote Reporter for November 1977 had a couple of items of interest to Military collectors. The front page headlined stories about two auctions, and a feature article by Pete Huntoon entitled "Alaska's Greatest Note.” Inside there was a story about ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service) beginning to grade world paper money as well as coins. Fred Schwan submitted a Series 541 50c Uncirculated Replacement note for certification. The note was serial number F10628327 and was certified as genuine. I wonder if Fred still has this note? Anyway this service eventually went away and some twenty years later the wheel was reinvented and we again have services certifying and grading notes. Hopefully they will experience the same fate as ANACS did. Schwan's column "Military Vignettes" describes the Suez Crisis of 1956. It is a great story and leads into the use of some very scarce notes by the combatants. It all began on July 26, 1952 when Gamal Abdel Nasser announced that his government had seized full control of the Suez Canal. He rejected the protests of the western powers and their proposals for an international board to operate the canal. The Israeli's invaded the Egyptian Sinai on October 29th and drove westward toward the canal. Britain and France demanded all troops be withdrawn ten miles from the canal and asked for Anglo-French occupation of the canal zone. Egypt rejected this proposal and Israel attacked across the canal into Egypt. By the 2nd of November the Gaza Strip and key positions in the Sinai peninsula had fallen. French and British forces invaded the north end of the canal zone on November 5th. The United Nations met in emergency session and on November 7th called for withdrawal of the three invaders from Egypt. The assembly created an international UN command force to supervise the evacuation and to patrol the Egypt-Israeli frontier. Major fighting ended on November 7 but the canal was blocked with sunken ships, wrecked cranes and other equipment. Great Britain and France complied with the General Assembly's demand for withdrawal by November 24. The canal was cleared and reopened in March of 1957. The French issued a special military currency for this operation. Actually the notes used in occupied Germany from 1947 to 1955 were overprinted for use in the Suez. This was the 50, 100 and 1000 franc notes on page 113 of World War II Remembered (SB 833-835). These notes were overprinted with 'FORCES FRANCAISES/EN/MEDITERRANEE ORIENTALE.” Two legends originally printed on the notes were obliterated by black boxes. See SB 851-853. These are very scarce notes and very seldom seen for sale. The British also were prepared to use a series of notes, the BAFSV (British Armed Forces Special Vouchers) third series, (WWII Remembered, page 177 SB 433-439) during the Suez Crisis. The notes were in place to be issued to troops being transferred to Egypt, but the number issued was probably small. These notes are very scarce except for the issues that were made available during the 1st Ministry of Defence Sale. Since both the French and British notes were only in use for only around two months, it is understandable why they are so scarce and demand quite a premium. Fred also mentioned a very interesting set of unfinished essaies of BMA (British Military Authority) notes that could possibly have been in preparation for use in the Suez. Only one set was known in a private collection although somewhere in the back of my mind, I believe a second set has been discovered, either in another collection or in the British Military Museum. Fred also had an ad in the paper, featuring Belgium Army Issues. Some of the values are bargains compared to the prices in WWII Remembered while others like the 100 franc note in fine are higher. So that goes to show you that some of us old timers didn't get all the good deals as ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Ski is correct (on at least this) about the MPC Series 541 50 cent replacement that I submitted for authentication. Somewhere in my archives is that note along with the certificate attesting to the fact that the 50 cent MPC is an authentic coin (!). It was the first piece of paper money every authenticated by ANACS. Possibly it was also the only piece of MPC. I am back at the keyboard after starting to send this Gram. I discovered that Gram 775 seems to have not been sent! It was created, saved, and (I thought) sent. It went to never never land when I started working here on Gram 776. I know what the lead story was, and I even know what the editorial was about. I do not remember what letters were included nor if there was a story beyond the lead story. I will get another copy of the lead story and rewrite the editorial (although I doubt if I can do as well the second time). On the other things, if in a few days your article or letter have not been published, please send them again. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, Congratulations on another great year. I think that the community is very thankful for the Gram and look forward to many more years. Please extend my subscription, I will pay in full. MPC Kid Dear Kid, Thanks for the comments, but based upon the missing Gram 775, I am not so sure that we deserve the praise. Editor Dear Gram, Just for the record, My favorite note is: Series 471 $5.00 note (Block position # 8) Keep up the good work. Gary Hansen Hi Fred, I have some great stuffings for the second edition. Good job with Schwanneee Salvage Co. I'm proud of you. Just received, photos to follow: USA Purple Heart and Silver Star named to a Philippino. Could be WW I or WW II. USA Purple Heart and Bronze Star named to a different Philippino. WWII. One set has the cap letters all upright while the other pair has slanted cap lettering. A notice under Philippines should be made that MacArthur's boys both from USA and the Philippines including guerillas which were inducted into the USArmy in various divisions in the islands: during and after the Jap. Occupation were entitled as recipients for various USA medals and awards. By the way on the History channel this morning they had a program about the 51 Hispanics that have received the Medal of Honor throughout the various wars. Cheers, Colin Response to Gramme A. I remember writing a Thurski column about looking out my hotel window in Chicago and watching the snow plows clear the runways at LaGuardia after a heavy snow storm that closed the airport. I also remember apologizing for some statement I made with a Mea Culpa from my "alter" boy days. Then of course there was the Thurski when I rewrote history with Pearl Harbor occurring on the 7th of December 1942. There examples along with the centimeter tokens that you wrote about were not mistakes, but challenges to see if any Gramsters were really reading the Thurski columns and were they really comprehending what was written. Now if you believe that, I have a wonderful type set of Philippine JIM that I will sell you for the bargain price of only $1000. What do you say? --Thurski ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention, November 7-10 2002.
