From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 777 Date: Friday, November 15, 2002 6:52 AM ============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 777 Friday November 15, 2002 “Rendezvous with destiny: the money of wwii” On December 7, 2002—61 years after the United States was thrust into the greatest global conflict in the history of mankind—the American Numismatic Association Museum will open “Rendezvous with Destiny: The Money of WWII.” This new exhibit will fill the 5,000-square-foot main gallery of the Museum at 818 North Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs. World War II involved more nations and a larger geographical area than any war, taking the lives of more than 70 million people around the globe. The ramifications and reverberations of that greatest of all conflicts continue to impact the lives of every person alive today. Money is the engine that drives war. Whether minted from gold, silver or copper, or formed from stone, paper or cloth, money was a major player on all sides of World War II. Regardless of its form or denomination—dollars, francs, lire, marks, pounds, rubles or yen—money was raised to finance war machines, counterfeited to destroy economies and fashioned to sustain lives. Today, it is a reflection of the people and nations that made and used it during those dark years of conflict. Throughout World War II, shortages in material and manpower forced both the Allied and Axis powers to radically alter their coinage. For example, copper used to produce the Lincoln cent was diverted in 1943 to manufacture weapons. The copper taken out of pocket change was put to use in making two naval cruisers and destroyers, 1,243 B-17 bombers, and 240 field guns and howitzers. The zinc-coated steel replacement Lincoln cents collected today remain a simple yet poignant reminder of the effects of war on money. This comprehensive exhibit at the Museum—operated by the American Numismatic Association, a 30,000-member, nonprofit, educational organization chartered by Congress—will showcase the coins, currency and artifacts from that great, global conflict. • From the European Theatre, the exhibit will include Allied and Axis coinage that changed as metal was channeled toward strategic uses; German-issued prisoner of war and concentration camp money; occupational and military money; and Axis and Allied counterfeit currency printed to shatter economies and morale. • From the Pacific Theatre, the exhibit will include Hawaii overprint money produced by the United States as an economic defense measure soon after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor; Japanese occupational currency printed in the local denominations, such as pesos, guldens and dollars; and recovered silver coins from the Treasure of Manila Bay that was dumped into the Philippine waters to prevent its capture. • From the Home Front, the exhibit will include U.S. War Bonds and ration coupons; steel cents, silver nickels and coins made from cartridge cases; internment camp and prisoner-of-war money; military orders and decorations presented to airmen, sailors and soldiers engaged in battles; and memorabilia from the 10th Mountain Brigade, which trained at Camp Hale near Leadville, Colorado. For more information about this exhibit, contact the ANA Museum at 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3279; telephone 719/632-2646 ext. 354; fax 719/634-4085; E-mail museum@money.org; or visit the ANA web site at www.money.org. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Joe Boling and I are the odd couple. We have known that and we readily admit it. We start the summer seminar with a lecture about our differences. I think that the classes figure this out within a few hours. Overall, I think that we have managed to maximize the advantages of our respective personalities. Odd couple Until my recent visit with Joe, I would have categorized his personality as organized. I now wonder about that. The Port Clinton black hole has been discussed many times here in the Gram. Joe has a black hole too; his is bigger and, therefore, better. I suppose that his is about three to four times the size of mine. Joe’s interest in the performing arts consume a good part of his black hole. Beyond that we are similar: computer equipment, notes, books, books, books, and, did I mention books and computer equipment? On a small table behind Joe’s desk (I do not have a desk, lotsa tables, but no desk) he has a pile of DVDs (music, software, movies, movies etc.). The pile is at least three feet high. Here is the good part. When he leans back in his chair, his head misses the pile by about half an inch. He repeats the lean several times every hour without touching the pile. It is a miracle of coordination. You might consider this an example of efficiency, but I am not so sure. It could be luck I suppose. You know that if I had such a pile, it would have been on the floor in a minute. On the desk is a pile of seven (yes seven) remotes: televisions, VCR, CD, video disk players, and who knows what else. Ah, one of them is not really a remote in the sense that we usually think of. It is the mouse to his computer. Here in my black hole, I do not have any entertainment devices. Well, wait, possibly I do. There might be a television over there in the corner under those papers. Then of course, I probably should not say too much. In order to use my mouse, I must fold down a laptop on my “desk” (table) and use the top as a mouse pad. I must make one last comment on another subject. When Joe and I were developing the title for the World War II Book, we might have considered something like “Rendezvous with destiny” but Rendezvous is much too hard to spell! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, I loved your "Remembered" story. As a guy who worked with computers back when we wired them daily, then again when we wrote in basic and had key punch girls type the cards, and finally as someone who owned one of the first commodores, I understood your travails well. Years ago when the book first came out I offered to upgrade your propaganda comments. The offer still holds. I will act as editor on all the propaganda note comments. You need only send me any items you want corrected or brought up to date and I will be happy to return new and (hopefully) better text. Herb Hi, Editor'n'Gramsters! I searched eBay for illustrations of Hawaii 20’s to check for the spread on the words ‘HAWAII’ on the faces and found this pair showing what I meant by variance of the overprinting. The eBay item is shown in the link below. http://cgi.netscape.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=800846387 You may have to paste this link into your browser box to make this work. I hope this helps further the discussion… Jay in Garrison, TX Dear Gram, Gary's trying to jerk my chain [re the 471/8 $5], apparently; or is this a nom de plume that the steamy editor invented? Regarding the offer of the Philippine JIM set, I'll take it, as long as it includes the 100 peso PV. So if you discovered while writing 776 that 775 had not been sent, why did you proceed to number them with a gap? 776 should have been renumbered 775 and the content of 775 salvaged when able and put into a future gram. Joe Dear Joe and Gramstes, Ok, we will extend all subscriptions by a Gram. About Gram 775, I still have hope hopes that Bill Gates will return it.
