You and I have spent untold hours on the road and this topic has surfaced on a number of our trips. The last time probably a few months ago between New Jersey and Washington DC. I don't think either of us has definitively come up with a firm hard answer that we could call number one and our choices probably change everytime we go though the exercise. You hit the nail on the head when you said that they were all our "kids" and like a good father we love every one of them. And you are absolutely right when you say that a great majority of them have stories associated with them. Stories about how they were acquired, or about their pedigrees or for how long we searched for that particular issue before the "legal adoption". Then there are the ones that got away! Those are the ones that cause sleepless nights while the ones in our collections only cause pleasant dreams. Having said that I decided to go ahead and choose a note that I have to place near the top of the list. This note proved to be the key to unlocking some of the mysteries to the Series 481 multi- printing exercise that we struggled with for many, many months. Of course, I speak about the Series 481 $1, 4th printing note. You can remember how excited I was when I called you with the information that I had a 481 $1 that had the position number back on the right side and it had a 4 in that position number and that 4 was standing on a foot (serif) just like the first printing. The thrill of finding that piece of information had to compare with soloing that first airplane or holding that first child born to you in your arms. Pure joy. I didn't own the note at the time, but I reported to the owner that I thought it was a great item. This was before we know a lot about the multiple printings. He eventually offered to trade it to me for an equivalent graded Series 481 $1. Again I jumped for joy. So I probably can make a case for a large number of my "kids" just like any proud father, but after thinking long and hard about it, this one has to rate near the top on my list. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== This is one of those unusual situations when I am preparing a Gram before the day that it will be mailed. It feels strange creating the Sunday Gram on Friday! There might be lots of MPC news in the next 36 hours and Gramsters might have to wait an extra 24 hours for their news. Ouch. Nonetheless, this is the best way to guarantee that we will not have another situation like last weekend when you had to go Gramless. Yes, I will be out of town this weekend. Unfortunately, this is a social obligation instead of a numismatic adventure. See there I go. Writing this in future time forgetting that it will be published in past time. This is way too hard for your steamed editor. PS After all of the above preparations, this Gram is being sent on Monday! Oh well.
