I have been simply ignoring the issue, because my favorite is always the one I picked up this week, or the one that was the subject of an inquiry by someone who lusts after it, or whatever. As Fred and Ski have said, we love all our children equally. But his selecting a "discovery note" as a candidate made me think back over the several discovery notes that I have owned. Certainly the most valuable were two that I sold last year in Hong Kong. The first of those to enter my collection was the Japan 1946 1000 yen (SB946, page 320), which I bought in 1985. However, I had seen the other one three years before that, at the Boston ANA; I just didn't get to own it right away. That was the Taiwan 5 yen silver certificate with Amoy re-circulation stamp (P-S602). I didn't get to buy it until 1986, at 8.6 times the price it had been sold for in 1982. Another similar piece was the 1 yen of the same issue, which I bought from Bill Henderson in 1983. All three of these were the first in Western collections to be recognized for what they were (or at least the first to be reported). An even earlier discovery piece was the booklet set of FTPC, SB1001-1005 in black with covers; I bought those from Francis Sanders in 1976. Years later copies of them with correspondence came into my hands showing that they had been owned much earlier by someone in New Mexico, apparently not a collector. A more recent discovery was the Malayan JIM $10 OSS counterfeit, SB2176b1q2. I discovered two of those in Bill Henderson's stock on 4 March 1993, and they remain the only ones reported. One had a corner off; it resides in a prominent midwest collection (not a steamy one). The better of the two is in the counterfeit set that I use for club programs, as an example of official counterfeiting by our side. Of all the notes discussed here, it is the only one I still own. I guess that makes it my favorite note by default. But wait--I also collect bonds. And the hands-down favorite among them has to be SB1261, with an issue amount of only Y130,000 (which would be 1300 pieces if they are all Y100 bonds, and much fewer if some of them are Y500 and Y1000 denominations). Here is a case where we had the piece recorded in our manuscript before one appeared. When I was sent a Xerox of the piece that is illustrated in SB (page 579), I was delighted to find that I had to write no new listing for it--and even more delighted when I was able to buy it in 1990. To date it is the only one reported. And then there are the medals.... ============================================== Editorial ============================================== I have been negligent (so what is new you say) about getting back to the subject of MPC donations to the ANA museum. The overwhelming sentiment was to leave the system alone. That is to have donations made directly to the museum. I certainly have no trouble with that. I still think that there might be room for separate donations or fund raising activities to raise money to purchase notes for donation to the museum. However, the current system certainly would not preclude this. Chris Conley has been very agreeable about everything on this subject so it should be great to work with him. I envision frequent reports here in the Gram about the museum holdings. Initially, we need an up-to-date list of what is in the museum. Then we will want report of new acquisitions. At least monthly we will want to run a complete list. I must admit the thought of a 26 cm diameter 1.5 cm thick brass token for POW's tickled my sense of humor (imagine doubling-up in a hand of poker). Nevertheless, I believe implicitly all items in the gram - especially those written by the gram's very knowledgeable regular columnists. The Philippine JIM type set sounds like a great bargain (I presume the notes are Unc.) and so I have just posted $1000 in slightly used unmarked bills in full payment. Should arrive any day now.
