You cite the lifespan of the series as the main reason for the scarcity of errors. I have another theory that I will toss your way. I suspect that the reason that there are so few trimming or fold errors has to do with the way in which MPC were issued to troops. As you undoubtedly know, most errors in US currency are culled from circulation by bank employees who are paid by dealers and collectors to set aside errors for them. Finance clerks, who would have more often than not been junior enlisted personnel, sorted MPC for payment at the finance units. If a finance clerk ran across an error it was likely set aside for return to higher up. Look at the effort to recall the 692 $20.00. It would not surprise me if finance training manuals had procedures for dealing with errors. Like the bank teller, finance units had to account for all their money. If an error were to be set aside as a souvenir, the clerk would have had to replace it with his own money. How many clerks would have used their own money to substitute for an error considering their low wages? You have identified that there were few contemporary collectors of MPC. This being the case there would have been little market or network for culling errors for the collector. Aside from saving an error as a curiosity there would have been little incentive to preserve them. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== It is a pleasure to publish the list of ANA MPC holdings above. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, Chris Conley may be agreeable about everything on the ANA museum and MPC, but whoever he is does not matter, it is Chris Connell who is the collections’ manager at the museum. Joe Dear Gram, In the recent past I have stated that I favor the replica MPC, and feel it will be an enhancement to the collecting of MPC. This weekend I see for the first time, something that flies in the face of this. A seller on eBay is selling the Replica MPC in a manner that unsuspecting buyers may confuse them with actual MPC. The auction ads are factual, even showing the back of the note where, if one looks closely, you can see the word 'COPY' printed on the note. The ads are informative, giving details of who printed, when issued and withdrawn, where the actual MPC were used and sometimes even more details. All details, in my opinion, designed to persuade potential buyer to believe these are actual MPC. Even though the word 'copy' is used in the ads, the ads do not 'CLEARLY' spell out the notes being offered are copies. LET THE BUYER BEWARE. Dick Freyser Dear Esteemed (?) I have been thinking about attending MPC Fest IV and bringing a large box with oil paintings of MPC with me, but I am not sure if the weather in Port Clinton would be agreeable to me. Editor Dear Editor, I found the story about the ANA display very interesting. Perhaps a little fanciful. It is certainly an ambitious undertaking. I note MPC is not mentioned. Warner Dear Warner, The ANA does not consider MPC a WWII issue because it started in 1946. We simply used a more comprehensive approach in WWII Remembered. Frankly, this is better because we expect that the ANA will then have a separate museum exhibition featuring MPC!
