I refer to the tokens, stamps, propaganda items, match book covers, postcards, ration coupons etc. that add something to your notes. If you collect war bonds, savings stamps are a nice addition to your bonds. If you collect POW chits, a match book cover from a camp that you have the chits from is a great ancillary item. Postcards showing a photo of a vignette from a note can add quite a bit when you exhibit your notes. Marv Mericle has done a wonderful job of acquiring the vignettes from MPC on card stock and exhibiting them with his award winning exhibit. Anyone that collects British military notes is familiar with the fiber laminate tokens that were produced because of a lack of small change. Once a collector is exposed to these tokens, he has to add them to his collection of British Military Authority (BMA) and British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSV) notes. The tokens first were produced for use in France. You will remember that the smallest value of French AMC was 2 francs. At that time a cup of tea cost a service man a lot less than 2 francs, so small change was needed. Hence the production of a 1/2 franc token. These tokens were produced by De La Rue Insulations Ltd.using a brown plastic laminate known as CP3. Four different designs of the 1/2 franc token were produced, probable due to different orders placed with the company. There was a token with 0.5mm lettering, one with 1.5mm lettering, one with 2.5mm lettering and one with an incuse impression. All were octagonal in shape. World War II Remembered says that the tokens were initially struck, then printed upon. Van Elmpt in his book British Armed Forces Special Vouchers shows text sheets from which the tokens were punched. I have to agree with van Elmpt in that I feel that we would have many varied rotated orientations if they were printed after they were struck. Having said that, we know that there are examples of both coin and medal orientations on all the CP3 tokens except possibly the incuse version. What I mean by coin orientation, is if you hold a coin at the three and nine o'clock positions with your thumb and forefinger and rotate it about the horizontal axis, you will view the reverse properly not upside down. In the medal orientation, you hold the item at the twelve and six o'clock positions and rotate about the vertical axis to get the proper orientation of the reverse. As I said above, all CP3 ( the three printed 1/2 franc, the 1/2 and 1 penny) have been found in both orientations except for the incuse version. That one only appears in medal orientation, but may be reported in some rotated orientation in the future. Phil Goldstein reported the last find when he came up with a 0.5mm lettered token with coin orientation only a couple of months ago. That 0.5mm lettering token is very difficult to find in any orientation. The same division of De La Rue produced the 1/2 penny and 1 penny tokens when the first series of BAFSV's were released in 1946. Again the smallest note in the BAFSV first series was for 3 pence, and again change was needed. It is reported that the CP3 tokens were not popular and thought was given to producing colored plastic tokens similar to those that were made for Austria. But for some reason unknown to me, the same brown laminate was again used but punched in circular form and the size for the two values was the size of a British shilling coin for the 1/2d token and the size of a 2-shilling coin for the 1d token. You will notice that the black printing on the tokens does tend to wear off with continued use. These CP3 tokens as well as the other plastic and metal tokens produced for NAAFI are great collectibles and add greatly to any collection. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Bond update—Yesterday I received the Series HH bond that the one bank refused to sell to me! At the urging of many of you, I will now write to the chairman of the board of the bank that would not sell to me. I think that I will send a copy to the chair of the bank that did as well. Here is one twist that I plan to use. In the packet of materials I am going to include a draft of a letter to the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank explaining how an FDIC bank had refused to sell me a bond. This will be a draft letter so that the chairman of the refusing bank can have an opportunity to convince me not to send it! Stay tuned. By the way, the bond is interesting. I will try to report on that too. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, Stuart Jones and I have a table at FUN. We will look forward to seeing the gang. David Amey Dear Gram, Guess what!! The Fest is the same time as the Long Beach Coin Show!! Scheduling problem. This happened 2 years ago also. Can you reschedule? Nick Dear Nick, Oh no. Gad, we have been through this before. Frankly, I doubt that we can change it at this point (I know that a few guys have purchased plane tickets). We begged for help on this scheduling right after the previous Fest to help avoid this sort of problem. Of course we will listen to the group. Comments please.
