============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 786 Sunday November 234, 2002 Boling to Denver By Bill Rosenblum Boling has agreed to be the featured speaker at the DAWN (Denver Area World Numismatists) meeting on Friday night December 6th the night before the ANA Museum's WWII opening. Joe will be speaking on counterfeit world paper money. As unofficial spokesman for DAWN I hearby invite all Gramsters who will be in our great state to attend the DAWN meeting. DAWN will be celebrating it's 26th anniversary that night. Gramsters Invited By Larry Lee, ANA Museum Curator All Gramsters are personally invited to the opening of the ANA Museum’s World War II exhibition on December 7th. The opening will take place at the museum galleries. If there is sufficient interest, we will arrange a special after hours visit for Gramsters to the exhibit and to see other materials that were not included in the exhibition. In particular we have a nice group of Philippine guerrilla notes that I think Gramsters would like to see. Of course we can also display our expanding collection of MPC. After that we can adjourn to some Colorado Springs eatery for an evening of fellowship. My Favorite Note from Texas By Jay Jackson My favorite note is an Italian AMC 100 Lire note with the black overprint skewed about 50% to the right...you know the note for its in your collection and is illustrated in WW II Remembered. My favorite note was found by me in a Houston flea market many years ago. Later, I sold it to Johnny Rowe who sold it to Amon Carter, Jr., who died owning it. IIRC, you nearly had to give a first-born to get it into your collection. But, that's not why its my favorite. It is my favorite because of its condition...best and most charitably described as 'G' for "Grubby." Yes, it is a VERY obvious error; an error so outstanding any collector upon obtaining it would immediately remove it from circulation. Heck, even a non-collector might pull this note and keep it. BUT, it circulated!!! Its wear pattern is consistant with lots of actual use for its intended purpose...providing a medium of exchange. Even tho' it is such a spectacular error, it was MORE valuable for the 100 lire worth of good/services its exchange would bring to the possessor. Makes one think about the hardships faced by an individual in the Italy of 1943-44... Later, y'all.. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== The ANA Museum WWII exhibit seems to be developing nicely especially with regards to making it a special event for Gramsters. Thus far Joe and Warner are the only two confirmed participants. I am still trying to figure out how I can make it happen, but I am sure that there are more of you from the area who should attend and might already be planning on it. Please inform us so that you can be listed in the calendar below. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Hello Gramsters and Doug! World's record huh! How about listing some "key" notes, and I'll show you a world's records! Like I'll pay $1000+ for a #461 $5 gem or records all day long for the other top 6 key pieces! I paid $1500 for the #692 $1 proof same time "that" note closed! Influenced by the proof??! and from Larry "ski" Smulczenski $84.86! for another #692 $1, cause it is a "good" buy!!! A certified CU68 , I would pay $150!!! SELL ME some notes at ridiculous prices! ((gems only!)) By the way, I paid $7500 for a #591 $10 raw and MORE for others! Why worry about a cheap note going 15 % over market levels! It ony makes others that own them happy! Plus there are far more crazier prices than that example that I have seen on ebay! Guy! Dear Guy, There are plenty of opportunities for world records at the Fest. The first that I would like to see crushed is “total number of Festers.” Even “number of California Festers” would be a great one to break. Editor Dear Fred, Please include me on the mailing list or let me know how to go about subscribing. I'm pretty new in the MPC collecting arena as I just began a collection last September. Actually, I came across a couple of old, beat-up series 692 fractionals that I had used during my time in Vietnam (1970-71) and thought I'd like to collect the four series that were used during the war. I then found the latest edition of the book on MPC and I was off and running! Well, actually it's more like a brisk walk as I still have kids to get through college but I'm enjoying myself so far. Anyway, I don't want to ramble on too long so just let me know about getting the newsletter and I'll talk to you later. Best regards, Terry Dear Terry, Welcome, I think that there is a spot left at the Fest! Editor Dear Editor I've pretty much given up any hope of Ebay suspending someone for shill bidding. In my experience, unless the person actually lists the same contact information for both ids, Ebay won't touch it. Just a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a Series 681 $20 note being auctioned off. What was interesting was this was the third time the seller was auctioning this note based upon the serial number of the note. The same buyer had bought the note in the previous two auctions, along with a few other coin related items more than once through the same seller. According to ebay, not enough evidence. So, I've just made my own personal "Do not buy from list." Cheers, Mark "Sparky" Watson ============================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS ============================================== 2002 Michigan State Numismatic Society convention.
