I really need to get out and shoot the one I bought from the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (in Port Clinton) last year. For those interested in the chit booklet from Kunming, China, lot 259--I bought that one. There are some extra nickel chits in it, plus the weird 35c chit. If some gramster got outbid by me, I apologize, but I didn't want to see it disappear into the void, so I put a saving bid on it and won it. I can tell that Larry Lee is working his buns off preparing the WWII exhibit at ANA. Fred and I have been reviewing exhibit text for the past three days. There's going to be a ton of stuff on display, and you saw Larry's invitation to Gramsters who want to see some of the other stuff in the vaults. But pardon me for taking some pride of ownership in the sixty cases of WWII material that Fred and I showed at the Anaheim ANA convention in 1995 (50th anniversary of victory). Some of those items are gone now--distributed to other collections. There has recently been an interesting thread in the eSylum (online newsletter of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society) about the desirability of selling a collection rather than donating it to a museum when the museum's mission is not specifically numismatic and the curator(s) not well versed in same. There have been several horror stories about museum collections that were looted because the staff did not know how to secure them or how to tell whether the items had been switched or pilfered. Which brings us to Ruth Hill, who insisted that her collection go to a museum, and who apparently truly believed that the museum would welcome, appreciate, and properly care for her notes. I don't know what the status of the major collection is, but there have been some recent sales advertising that they are handing Ruth Hill notes. What a shame. But that brings us to the alternative--releasing rare material to the marketplace, where interested buyers will be able to acquire it. A fellow walked up to me in London last year and told me how pleased he was to have been able to buy the 5c Alasvallei NEI internment camp note that I had (it went in the Hong Kong sale last year). I'm glad that it went to such an enthusiastic new owner. I'll be at the Michigan State show Thursday-Sunday this week, training ANA judges. Then I'll be at the ANA exhibit opening Friday-Saturday of next week. If any gramster visiting either venue wants me to bring something special for examination, let me know. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Joe mentions our exhibition of WWII material at the 1995 ANA convention. Yes, 60 cases crammed with stuff. It was quite a thing. Angus Bruce put in a few selected cases. It seems like someone else might have had a few. Possibly it was Kevin Maloy (Kevin was it you?). There are a lot of interesting stories about the exhibit itself. I had a newspaper with the Pearl Harbor headline. Enroute to California (I drove) Japan apologized for starting the whole thing and there was a headline to that effect in USA Today. I put the two papers side by side in at case (along with lotsa notes and stuff). We had a 48 star American flag, a Japanese flag and an Nazi flag hung to draw attention to the exhibit. There were complaints from someone (who did not bother to even see that the flag was part of an educational exhibit) and we were asked to take down the German flag. In a rare display of accommodation by me, I took it down. An ANA official thanked me/us for not making a stink. For that we got a thank you. I cannot remember getting even that about the exhibit except from Tom Fitzgerald who was a coconspirator with us. As usual, I was the last one taking down an exhibit, but this was different. First, there were 60 cases. Next, they were SERIOUS about the deadline. At the exact minute listed wrecking crews invaded the place to tear it down (and presumably reconfigure the hall) for the next event. Judy had to play security guard while I shovled materials into envlopes. Now for the best part of the story. Some of my material is still in those envelopes waiting to be unpacked. (I also have some envelopes of notes received from Joe waiting to be integrated into my collection. Those envelopes are from the 1970s! Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor: The announcement in today's Gram about the DAWN meeting on December 6th is indeed good news.
