Open Letter from ANA President Dear GRAMsters: I appreciate any and all comments regarding ANA. I want to respond to all who receive the great MPC Gram that the ANA recently placed a hot link at the bottom of the front page regarding the new "RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY: THE MONEY OF WWII" exhibit, which will be premiering on December 7, 2002. On November 12, 2002 a press release from ANA went out regarding this new exhibit. This information could have been accessed through The Newsroom or Virtual Museum site located of course at, www.money.org. Whenever you are looking for something on the ANA site please use the ANA Site Search on the front page. I use it to find old (and new) information that is stored on the ANA site. On behalf of the ANA Board, Headquarters Staff and membership, I want to sincerely thank the MPC Gram and its dedicated numismatists for all they are doing to promote the ANA. I think it is absolutely wonderful that the MPC Gram has a scholarship fund to send some GRAMsters to the ANA Summer Seminar 03. The Gram also provides the instructors for the course. Besides these, the Gram is a must site for anyone who collects military money. The stories in the Gram in the area of military money are very educational. The personal experiences by GRAMsters regarding their tours of duty are interesting and fascinating. They bring back memories of my tour in Vietnam as a U. S. Marine in 1964 and 1965. Unfortunately, I have no great experiences with MPC during my tour to relate to the MPCGram. I will be at the Michigan State show this weekend and also at the FUN show. I am always available for conversation regarding the ANA or our hobby. Please E-mail me with your thoughts and concerns - both positive and negative - regarding ANA. I can be reached at johnancyw@aol.com If the Gram wants to list the President of the ANA as a contact they are welcome to. Thank you. Once again, thank you MPC Gram and all the GRAMsters for your many contributions to the numismatic hobby. On behalf of Nancy and myself (both attending the MPC Fest in 03) we want to wish all the GRAMsters a healthy, happy, safe and fulfilling Thanksgiving Day and Holiday Season which will be soon upon us. Yours in Numismatics, John Wilson, ANA President ============================================== Editorial ============================================== This is one of those pleasant (rare) days at Gram HQ. We feel warm from receiving news from the ANA Museum and ANA president (Ken Berger (below) makes sure that it does not go to our head). I must correct a few points in President Wilson’s letter and comment on a few others. The scholarship fund for the ANA summer seminar is not only for Gramsters. At least one nongramster received a scholarship in 2002 and it is likely that more will in the future. The Gram does not provide instructors for the seminar. True, the instructors are Gram activists, but the Gram, as mentioned before, has no assets for anything. Indeed, the editor is expected to publish the Gram from the seminar. The good news there is that the seminar tends to create news to report! All of this could be just a cute little semantic game, except that the ANA does have a system allowing interested parties to sponsor an instructor thereby saving the association money. Frankly, we do not encourage such support over the Gram-Seminar scholarships, because we feel that the scholarships contribute more directly to putting butts in the seats, but there is at least one case where we think that instructor sponsorships are attractive. Instructor sponsorships can be charitable donations netting a tax benefit that the internal scholarships do not. Regarding the promotion of the forthcoming exhibition I feel that John missed the point. Because a newsrelease could be found on the website does not mean that the event was given the prominent attention that it deserves. However, I visited the site a few minutes ago and found the link on the welcome page satisfactory—not great—but satisfactory. It is a satisfactory second step. We can and will assume that this step was planned long ago. At the top of the welcome page is an ancient gold coin. This is a reasonable item, but it has not time value. It can be there on ANY day when there is not timely information to convey. Something interesting from the exhibition should be there linked to the current page which should be modified some. Obviously we support this exhibition and many/most of the ANAs activities promoting the wonderful world of numismatics. We look forward to further expansion by mutual effort. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor: Shame on you for taking down the Nazi flag in your WWII exhibit. You let PC (political correctness) overrule education. History is history whether some people like it or not. You can not rewrite or change history just to be politically correct. This is why academic freedom is so important. We must allow all views to be heard. The sad thing is that you were not espousing Nazism but rather using the flag as part of an overall exhibit. That is what makes its removable even more wrong. As the saying goes, "Those who do not know history, are condemned to repeat it." You may say that presenting the exhibit without the flag was more important than not presenting it at all. But a biased presentation, based on the likes or dislikes of a minority group of individuals, does not do the exhibit justice. I hope you will never cave in again. Ken Berger Dear Sir, I certainly cannot disagree with you. Am I the only one who ever deserves your criticism? (By the way, I LOVE the criticism. Please send more (seriously)). Shamefaced editor Dear Editor Interesting about the lack of mention about the WWII exhibit on the ANA's website. I'm not accomplished enough to navigate through the whole website myself. However yesterday I received copies of Coin World and Bank Note Reporter and both had stories about the exhibit. I spoke with Larry Lee yesterday and he's excited. I'm excited. Hope to see you there.
