============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 790 Thanksgiving Day November 27, 2002 Turkey thurski By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski This year the last Thurski of November happens to fall on Thanksgiving. In the past I have tried to associate the holiday with a banknote or something to do with the collection of military currency. This gets to be pretty difficult as there are very few vignettes of Thanksgiving meals or anything that you can even vaguely associate with Thanksgiving on a World War II note. I remember comparing the rising Phoenix vignette from the French Colonies series to a turkey being roasted over an open fire, but that was as close as I could come in the last couple of years. I have gone into World War II Remembered and looked for some ideas under the country name of "Turkey" to try and bring in that connection. There is a cute little story about Operation Cicero under Turkey, but I remember using that tale in a previous Thurski column. If you don't remember it, go to page 475 and refresh your memory. The military notes from Turkey are kind of lackluster, and I couldn't remember any stories about them, so I was left scratching my head. I decided to look at my chit collection and there under the seasonal title of Turkey, I found a set of three chits that I knew nothing about, but since we are talking turkey, maybe with a little research I could come up with some facts about where they were from. The chits themselves are denominated 5c, 10c and 25c and colored pink, white and green respectively. They bear the identification of N.C.O. OPEN MESS/ MANZARALI STATION/ A.P.O. 254, N.Y. The natural first place to start would be with the A.P.O. location. A great book for this is Geographic Locations of U.S. APO's. I have a very old copy and the organization that published this book has changed its name. I believe it is now called the Military Postal History Society, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, APO 254 is listed as Ankara, Turkey and was assigned there in January of 1957 and redesignated as 09254 in January of 1965. That gives us an eight year time frame into which these chits can be placed. I then went to Google on the Internet and after some hunting came across a history of Site 23 from the Manzarali Mauler. I suppose this was a base newspaper and it sounded interesting. TUSLOG (Turkey-United States Logistics) Det 27 was organized in Ankara on 1 October 1957 to monitor the construction of site 23. Site 23 was so named because it was 23 miles south southwest of Ankara and sits on 340 acres of treeless low hills. On 27 April of 1960, the post was redesignated as Manzarali Station by a General Order #18 and became operational at that time. Manzarali, by the way, means "view from the hill". This further limits the time frame of usage of these three chits to May 1960 thru Dec 1964. Reading the history a little closer finds that in December 1962, the post got its own APO number of APO 663 and no longer did their mail have to traverse through Ankara. A check with the APO Guide confirmed this fact and now confines are usage to a period of two and a half years. That is not bad for pinpointing a usage time frame. The mission of Manzarali Station was classified but its main function would appear to be that of a relay station, part of a chain of such stations including many outside of major cities, that formed the western military defense ring around the Soviet Union during the cold war. Although I could not find an exact date, I did find a New York Times News Service article that reported the transfer of this $15 million site to the Turkish Military as a NATO facility. I would guess that this occurred in the late 1960's or early 1970's. So how is that for a Turkey column? I know it’s a stretch but it's the best I could do. Hope all you Gramsters have a very Happy Thanksgiving and get your fill of Turkey, ah-- make that turkey. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== Happy Thanksgiving. It might be trite to say, but I wish all of you a joyous Thanksgiving. In my experience, Thanksgiving day is a BIG deal in the military services. Untold millions of turkey dinners have been served to men (yes, and a few women) in combat zones and within minutes of exchanging gunfire. Nonetheless, I, as Larry, cannot think of a military numismatic item with a Thanksgiving theme. Mementoes are often created for these days. The most common of these is a printed menu and I think one of those worked its way into WWII Remembered as a supplemental illustration. These are certainly not numismatic items, but they ARE historical items. I laughed when I first read Ski’s article. I thought that he said that since Thanksgiving fell on a Thursday this year….. Of course I read it wrong. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Editor, I missed the early part of the controversy over the Nazi flag in your WW2 exhibit. I trust it is not too late to weigh in with an opinion. To evaluate the educational benefit of keeping the flag in the exhibit one would have to know how it was used. Was it part of the exhibit along with other items showing how the Nazis used symbolism to further their cause? Perhaps it was part of the exhibit along with other items showing how the Nazis used propaganda to manipulate public opinion? You get the idea. What if the Nazi flag was just hanging there? What educational purpose did it serve then? Alone and out of context, what knowledge would we gain from seeing the flag about the awful phenomenon known as Nazi Germany? To just having the flag hanging there without any specific educational purpose would be offensive, to me an to countless others. It is not being "politically correct" to remove the flag, it is being sensitive to the feelings of your audience. If that is why you removed the flag, I commend you for doing so. By the way, we seemed to have entered the "post politically correct" period. Where being "politically correct" or doing the "politically correct" thing is definitely a "no no." Calling someone or an action "politically correct" is almost as bad as calling them or it "liberal." Mel Steinberg Dear Gram, The person listed below logged in to the database and in the registration process his e-mail mail got returned as undeliverable if he gets the gram or if some one know him please inform him: James W. Sanders Thank you, Doug Bell Webmaster Dear Gram, I agree with Ken Berger, history overrules political correctness. I assume it is not "p.c." for a person to collect such things as German issue Concentration Camp Currency, Prisoner of War Camp notes from Germany, Winterhelfswerk Notes, I can go on and on.. (most notes had a swastika on them) The only way to prevent history from repeating itself is not by ignoring or burying the facts and proof of atrocities, but by educating the younger generations. This is done by items of historical value, such as a flag, coins, currency, propaganda leaflets, photographs, etc. Anyone who demands such history to be ignored, removed, hidden (or perhaps burned) , not only encourages such bahavior to be repeated, but also lower themselves to the level of of which Fascist Leader presented themselves. Ignoring problems won't make them go away, but ingoring and subsequently forgetting history makes it repeat itself. Best Wishes, Philip M.
