Daniel III This book was published by Northern Illinois University, but the author is from Australia and used many more British than American sources. It has the Japanese introducing military yen into Burma first, then they quickly replaced it with JIM. Is this true? The author also has the "S" JIM for Singapore and the "Guilder" JIM for the Dutch East Indies. And she writes that some of the "M" JIM was used in Burma in the early days. I remember my sources having the "S" JIM for Sumatra in the Dutch East Indies (DEI). Is this true too? Someone will very likely email me that the above are errors, but I am hoping the "S" JIM was for Singapore. The Indian National Army, a Japanese ally, is mentioned and the Azad Hind Bank being created to handle the funds of the "Provisional Government" led by Subhas Chandra Bose. There are also two sections on bonds that "paid" when their numbers were drawn like in a lottery, and there were separate lotteries too. The same chapter also has some great information about British SOE (Special Operations Executive) operative Mr. J.A.T Galvin presenting the idea in March 1942 to counterfeit "B," "M" and Guilder JIM, Thai baht, and Nanking Chinese dollars. An interesting paragraph is that they did not know the Burmese liked crisp and clean notes, and they had "aged" their fake "B" JIM by soaking them in weak tea, folding and crinkling them, and rubbing some dirt on them. Has anyone found them in this condition? And there were a total of twelve intelligence activities operating in S.E. Asia! Some of them and their operations are named too. Good stuff! There is also a brief mention of the Japanese counterfeiting Indian 10-Rupee notes with limp paper and without "crackle," but they caused the British to add a security thread to their postwar currency. When the British returned to Burma, they would issue British Military Administration (BMA) notes with " Military Administration of Burma" and "Legal tender in Burma only" on them. There is also a discussion about how to handle the JIM, and they requested documents about it from the allies. The allies planned to completely demonetize JIM, so the British decided to do the same, but there was a brief exception in Arakan. There were a great deal of problems with completing contracts in the postwar period of 1945 to 1947 that were started during the war, and the realization that a value did have to be given to contracts and loans made in JIM denominations. So the British created the Japanese Currency Evaluation Act of 1947 to give a high value to JIM at the beginning of the war and very little value to them at the end of the war. Many researchers will be ecstatic when they see the many sources of information in the notes and the Bibliography of this reference. I can see book want lists jumping in length thanks to the Australian author of this reference! I tried to purchase it online from Northern Illinois University but could never find the right place.
