============================================== MPC GRAM ============================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 794 Wednesday December 4, 2002 More Turkey By Joe Boling Ah, but there IS a turkey connection Sorry, folks; Monday slipped right by me; it was the day I was returning from the Michigan State show. The Thanksgiving Thurski, dealing with US club chits for Manzarali Station, was a good one. Ski worked the available resources to narrow down the issue period nicely. How many of you realize that we have bases in Turkey that are farther east than Moscow? Intuitively, one does not believe that, but look at a map. Turkey goes east forever. As for a turkey connection for military issues, for which Ski felt he was stretching, there is a more famous one--it just happens to be WWI instead of WWII. Since the gram is dedicated to the study of all military money, it's appropriate to include it. Look at Turkey P110, the 10 livres AH1334 note. The "x" variety (P110x) is a widely-available counterfeit that is thought to be a British product of the period. This is when the British were fighting the Ottomans, and Lawrence of Arabia was cavorting around the mid-east. The original 10 livres note is quite scarce; I have had a Turkish collector looking for one for me for months without success. He reports that the fakes originally surfaced in Canada (but does not say when); I wonder if a retired soldier took them there sometime between 1920 and their discovery? An interesting feature of the fakes is that the small numerals "10" in the borders on the back are oriented so that they read properly from the left edge of the note. On the originals, they are oriented differently (not having one at hand, I can't say how, but I think the ones on the left side of the note are turned so that the numerals on both ends have their bases toward the center--anyone have one who can check that?). It would be a subtle but easy way to separate the fakes from the originals if you were a member of the perpetrating forces and did not want to be taken advantage of by your own fakes. My source tells me that these fakes now sell in Turkey for $20 in high grade, although most examples seen have been wet to a greater or lesser extent sometime in their lives; most are stained. My stained AU piece cost me exactly that ($20) in 2001 at FUN, but I have recently seen people asking as much as $100 for one. Don't pay it. Middle grade originals, however, when they can be found, are priced in the several hundreds of dollars. ============================================== Editorial ============================================== While Ski and Joe have been talking about Turkey (the country) as a substitute for turkey (the bird), Turkey has been making international news as the possible (likely) host of US military forces for war with Iraq. Ski talked about chits from Turkey. It is unlikely that something as overt as that is currently being used in Turkey, but I believe that there is a military banking facility or two there. I have never seen any (that I can remember), but am confident that they are there. I for one would like to add such a check to my collection. Fred ============================================== Mail Call ============================================== Dear Gram, Somebody mentioned a few Grams ago, that a Caution List of bad deals / dealers / eBay sellers of MPC might be a idea worth starting I've been mulling over the possibly of exactly that. Putting in a section on my MPC website dedicated to this subject. I would like more input from those who would like to see it before I make a final decision. The reason I want it on my website and not part of the gram is I am an independent collector, as opposed to the Gram which is a community service, and although it would be doing a service in the Gram, in all fairness the Gram cannot align itself to a particular side of an argument. Therefore I'm thinking of putting it on my website. I guess the basics needed to start a section of this subject are: Name / Ebay seller ID, item(s) in discussion and reason for words of caution. I will not get in the middle of an argument, or arbitrate a settlement and in all honesty, won't be party to a battle of bad mouthing and mudslinging and I'm probably going to get into some hot water on my own just be putting this list up. So therefore I'm soliciting ideas for the creation of a Caution List. What do you think? Best Wishes, Philip M. Goldstein Dear Gram, If you check Numismatic News, you will read that the Long Beach dates are: Feb. 27 - March 2, 2003, May 29 - June 1, 2003, Jan 29 - Feb. 1, 2004, June 3 - 6, 2004, and Sept. 9 -12, 2004. Unfortunately, it did not list the Sept. 2003 dates. Ken Berger Dear Ken, Thanks, but it seems like cheating to simply look in NN! Besides, we really prefer that our friends at NN/KP have to look in the Gram for info instead of the other way!
