=========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 798 Monday December 9, 2002 Museum Opening Spectacular More than 550 people packed into the American Numismatic Association Museum for the opening of the World War II numismatics exhibition Rendezvous with Destiny. This smashed all records for a museum event at the ANA. The exhibit features numismatics from all phases of the war. Paper money, coins, commemorative medals, awards from all sides and most countries are included. The exhibit will be open through summer 2003 and admission is free. Match Found in Database! By Doug Bell A collector hit the jackpot over the weekend while entering his notes in the online database. He entered a note and received a message that the serial number matched that of another in the database! Since the beginning of this service we have wondered how many notes it would take before a match was found. We also looked forward to it! Collectors have known for a long time that such matches are rare and desirable. The fact that nearly 9000 notes were entered before a match was found seems to confirm this conclusion. Identification of the notes and collectors will remain confidential allowing them time to work on a deal that might give one of them the pair. Hopefully, they will give more details in the future. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== I seem to have really messed up Saturday in sending the Pearl Gram. True, we were making a small tech change, but it all boils down to an old fashion brain cramp. I apologize for any inconvenience. However, I strongly recommend that you read it if you did not. Specifically, it includes two great letters. I resent the Dec 7 Gram (797) this morning. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I just returned from the opening of "RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY EXHIBIT." It's too soon, and I'm too filled with emotions to render any kind of review of the exhibit, but everybody who has any chance of seeing it should try to do it. The gallery was packed which made viewing difficult but the ANA staff did a bangup job (working until 9:30 PM Friday night) in setting up this exhibit. I will write more later, but it was heartening to see so many children attend. Bill Rosenblum Dear Gram, I thought I would comment on the recent blurb in the Gram concerning Phil Goldstein hosting a section on his website to rate MPC dealers and collectors. I think it is a very bad idea, for various reasons. First of all eBay already has just that, a feedback rating on all sellers or buyers. AND IT WORKS WELL! So what would this new one do? Let someone vent their frustration on a deal gone bad or one which they felt went bad? And who would decide or arbitrate it? This would be an immense responsibility in being objective, and who would have the final say on who gets what rating. Over the years I have learned that the ones who do not treat others fairly get their just return regardless. And also, USUALLY the stories you hear about this or that dealer or collector ALWAYS have two sides. One soon learns who overgrades or overcharges (nearly the same thing), or who has a reputation for selling bogus notes, cleaned notes, repaired coins, and the like. Also to put that rating on one's website might turn out to be slanderous and libelous resulting in a lawsuit. This is a great hobby and a great vocation! There is no need to rate anyone, they will do that all on their own. Sure someone may get by ripping you off once or even twice, (three times---I hope not!) but chances are they will pay for it over the long run by it hurting their sales. And the over-nit-picking or excessively price-conscious collector will lose out because he will not be offered the item (s) he wants. (It works both ways.) I’ll give you an example of a scenario that I have repeated numerous times over the years and am doing right now in fact with United States national banknotes. I have done this with MPC, world notes, European coins, et al. When I get into an area I do not know much about, say ancients for example, and decide I want to buy them for resale overseas or anywhere for that matter, I regularly do the following. I go to a dealer, a couple or more dealers in fact, and tell them what I am interested in and that I want to buy such and such on a regular basis. I trust them COMPLETELY! That is until I find out they are not the one I want to deal with. How? This is the interesting part and has happened to me many times. If you buy wholesale 50 MPC notes say, from a dealer and a month later most or all are gone, that is a good indication that he is supplying you with what you need at fair market prices. However if you have 45 of those notes left after 30 days, 60 days, or even worse, 90 days, then you can figure that he is charging you too much, not being fair or whatever. Well, I do not buy from that dealer EVER again. But the one(s) that treats me right gets tons and tons of my business. For years and years……………………. Mike Cummings Dear Gram, Remember a year ago I sent you info about a crooked dealer operating on ebay?????? I can hear the steam.......You wouldn't print because of ________. Well the local Haddonfield Township, NJ Police got him. He plead guilty and is supposed to be paying about seven people back. If not, we'll go back to DA, court and go again....This was not an accident, it was grand theft. Ebay did remove him from their list of dealers!! Regards, Bob Drake Dear Bob, Thank you for writing again. You will probably be upset again that we did not publish the name of the crook again, but we are delighted with the results that you have received. Not too long ago, a Gramster wrote a blistering letter to the Gram about a dealer and an MPC transaction. He was outraged when we declined to publish his accusations. We invited him to change the tone of the letter, but he declined. Not too much later the writer was engaged in another transaction in which he committed the same abuse about which he had been so outraged. In that case one of the main reasons for not publishing the letter was that the target was not a Gramster and does not use email. Therefore, it was difficult for us to invite his comments before publication and still be timely. You case is less difficult. Assuming the facts as you say them (and we have no reason to doubt them), there would be little harm in publishing the name. However, in the final analysis, we decided that there was also little to gain. Mike Cummings is correct when he says that we do not want to get involved in resolving disputes among numismatists. Our legal staff has enough work as it is. Editor Dear Editor, I want to thank you all for the work you do to get the MPCGram published. I was at a coin show in Flint, Mi. today and was doing my 2ndtime around the tables. I asked at one table if he had any MPCs he said yes and brought out a box from behind the table. The prices were marked $1 each or 6 for $5. I bought a 100 peso JIM, 5 pence BAF, tien frank, tien gulden JIM, and 2 1922 German notes, about 3 bills from the back found a 1000 won Korean bill with 24 signatures. after paying for them I explained what a short snort was to the seller. he had never heard of them. He looked find of sorry her had sold it. If not for the Gram I would not know what it was. Thanks again for the great work. Steve Payne Editor, Well, I'm glad I did not delete today's gram 796 in favor of the one that came out with this subject line: MPCGram 797 (corrected, the only change is the number in subject line) because the content of the allegedly corrected gram WAS 796; the only place to read 797 was in the gram that was numbered 796. However, mail call in that one ended with a "Dear Gram," line an no further content (except the daily boilerplate); was there supposed to be a third letter in 797, following Mel's?
