Slightly over 550 persons visited between 1000 and 1600, many with questions about items among their family treasures (some had brought the treasures with them--of the ones I saw, all were suitable family mementos, but nothing to excite collectors). Considering that there was a large, well-publicized annual municipal event also occurring that day, the number who elected to come to ANA was gratifying. Some were in vintage uniforms (including seminarian Adna Wilde, wearing his white winter overgarment with 10th Mountain Division patch and Silver Star). The last family to go through came from Monument, Colorado, and expressed much interest in having a group of school kids attend sometime in the coming semester. Some of you may have seen the ANA press release; the opening ceremony, at 1055 (the time in Colorado when bombs began falling in Hawaii), was conducted by ANA executive director Ed Rochette, who said a few words and turned the podium over to Brigader General (ret) George Fagan, formerly AF Academy librarian, who is a WWII veteran. General Fagan described his months of training as a fighter pilot prior to shipping out to England. Particularly interesting was his description of an English countryside so covered with airstrips that one had difficulty picking out the correct one for landing. Following his talk Lieutenant Colonel (ret) Wilde described his introduction to the 10th Division, their preparation, and their eventual insertion into combat in Italy in 1945. The exhibit was still in turmoil when I arrived Friday at lunchtime, with about half of the cases still open, curator Lee still printing description cards (and having fits with a font conflict), and workers still moving cases and hanging lights and wall-mounted placards. One of those placards consists of two columns of acknowledgments for loans to the exhibit, followed by a very prominent recognition of two persons well-known to gram readers--the editor and this columnist. That was a pleasant surprise. There are still some tweaks required to eliminate factual errors in the displays (and to remove a couple of non-WWII-related items that snuck in), but the overall impression is excellent, and most viewers seemed to be duly impressed. I learned the answer to a question I posed here in September; Ration Book #1 has the same format as the familiar #3 and #4, stamps bound into a stapled card cover. The single folded sheet with cut-away coupons that I described in September seems to be a very unusual form of RB#1. The exhibit will not contain much new for most collectors of military money, but is worth seeing if you are traveling near ANA HQ. It will remain up until 15 August, so all summer seminar attendees will have a chance to see it. Remember, you can get a full-ride scholarship to seminar by winning the National Coin Week exhibit award at the Charlotte ANA convention, or you can apply through the gram for an award from the seminar scholarship committee (application details to be announced soon). The MPCFest central finance office prepared a special issue of series 022 MFC in denominations of $1, $2, and $3. The notes differ from standard 022 notes in the following ways: $1, commemorative text (printed, not stamped) at top face: "Rendezvous with Destiny:" in light blue; "the Money of WWII/December 7, 2002" in black in two lines; all over the large green ONE, with serial number omitted. Serial number, consisting of a letter, eight digits, and an airplane, at right side above where bar code is on standard notes; bar code omitted. Face check number/letter omitted at lower left. No change to back. $2, commemorative text (first two lines green, date line black) printed where serial number appears on standard note. Serial number (same format as $1, in significantly larger font) replaces bar code at bottom face. Face check number/letter omitted at top right. No change to back. $3, commemorative text (first line in red, other two lines in black) replaces serial number at top face; face check number/letter omitted; serial number in same format and size as $2 replaces bar code at bottom face. No change to back. No error or counterfeit notes were detected. The three denominations were received in Colorado Springs numbered D00000000@ through D00000015@, where @ represents a silhouette of a four-engine swept-wing (presumably jet) aircraft (apparently no B-29 image was available for this block character). The notes with zero serials (one of each denomination) were voided with a blue and red X VOID stamp over the "1" or the line DOLLARS on the back. The voided notes were used for short snorters, all three signed by the following: Adna Wilde, Robert R. Kutcher, Tiffanie Bueschel, Warner Talso, J E Boling, Gail Baker (all seminarians), Clifford Mishler, Geo W Fagan, Ed Rochette, Bill Rosenblum, Ken Hallenbeck. The short snorters were distributed as follows: $1 ANA museum; $2 Warner Talso; $3 J E Boling. The following festers and seminarians who reported with pay books drew $6 of the commemorative MFC: Warner Talso, SN1; Gail Baker, SN2; Robert Kutcher, SN3, Tiffanie Bueschel, SN4; J E Boling, SN8. Seminarian Wilde, lacking his pay book, received a single note (denomination and SN not recorded) as part of the general distribution of commemorative notes as souvenirs for attendees of the opening. When he later returned with his pay book, all notes had been distributed, so his paybook was annotated to show receipt of a partial pay, and he was instructed to enter the amount himself when he returned home and ascertained the denomination of the note he had received. The class A agent regrets having exhausted his satchel before Colonel Wilde returned for pay. In addition to the distribution of thirty (otherwise unmarked) souvenir examples of MFC series 022(RwD) to exhibit visitors, Fest 2002 challenge coins were awarded to the following individuals for appropriate services: Cliff Mishler, Chris Cipoletti (ANA's incoming executive director), Adna Wilde, and Larry Lee (ANA museum curator). =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Tomorrow’s Gram is an important milestone. In keeping with normal Gram editorial practices, I hope to be able to milk it for TWO editorials! Eight hundred Grams. Wow, it is hard to imagine. It is hard to imagine that we have reached that level. It is also hard to imagine life before the Gram. We welcome your comments on this milestone. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, This may be not meaningful much to the rest of the 'gramsters, but it is my Pearl Harbor Story... My G'mom [dad's mom] was visiting relatives in Southern Mississippi when the base at Pearl Harbor was attacked. She was unaware of any other 'Pearl Harbor' but the Southern Mississippi mouth of the Pearl River {boundary of Miss and La} so, she was fearful of being able to returrn to North East Texas...[COULD SHE CROSS W/O JAPS ATTACKING???] She did make it back OK... Never heard what g'pa thought 'bout this, he died in '58 and dad died in July this year w/o me asking... So, moral of this story is, ASK YER FOLKS WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!
