In a 1588 speech titled: "A Discourse upon Coins", given at the Academy in Florence by Bernardo Davanzati, I think he captured the crux of that question perfectly. "A Mole is a vile and despicable Animal, but in the Siege of Cassilino the Famine was so great, that one was sold for 200 Gold Florins; and yet it was not dear, for he that parted with it died of Hunger, and he that bought it outlived the Siege." His commentary will appear on Sundays. We are excited about this. He has lots of good ideas, but we will let him explain his plans-if he want to. Alternatively, he might just make us figure it out. We hope and anticipate that you will support his efforts with questions, comments, and those inevitable criticisms (unless you have run out from aiming them at the steamed editor). Marcus might be 100 or more columns behind the other columnists, but based upon the excessive experience of the others, he has good chance of setting the all time Gram record for number of columns! If you ever want to hold that record, you should probably start a column next week too! Write or call, there are still four vacancies! Old business. In the hoopla on Gram 800 I wanted to comment that one of the disappointments at this end is the use of the For Sale section. We know that it works. Lots of great material has been sold there, but overall, the number of items offered has been small. I plan on offering things myself in the weeks to come to help get it going, but we need your help. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, In response to the Thurski question about the value of the rupee in 1941. The official exchange was 3.5 rupee to a dollar. I believe the receipts are similar to the French Bons de Solidarite which were given for donations to refugee and orphan relief. In addition to the Hissar note featured in the Thurski column, I know of a few other rupee and even anna denominated receipts from WWII. Jim Downey Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I was recently at a stamp show near my wife's apartment in McLean, Virginia, where there was a table of donated philatelic material to be sold for the benefit of Wounded Veterans. I was very happy to see several dealers and collectors donate pieces while I was at the show. I asked the elderly man manning the table if he was a veteran. He replied that he was a WWII Army combat engineer in Europe. He told me about building a couple of bridges important to the British military campaign in Northern Germany during the last combat of the war. After the war was over, he was in Bremerhaven and learned that soldiers could get an honorable discharge and be sworn in as a merchant marine for a one-way return voyage to the U.S. Since he had only 52 points and 55 were needed at that time to immediately return to the U.S., he applied for and received his honorable discharge and was in the U.S. Merchant Marine the next day on a hospital ship. He said many WWII U.S. Merchant Marine ships sailed with European refugees as crewmen. The problem was that when the ships arrived in Europe after the war, many crewman jumped ship and headed home, and new crews were needed to sail the ships back to the U.S., where they could get a new crew. So they put out the word to U.S. servicemen who wanted to come home earlier than their rotation points would have allowed them to on regular troop ships. Daniel III Dear Gram, Now you that you know where to look for the dates of LBCSs, since the MPCFests are smaller shows, they should give way to the larger show!!! Can the MS (master scheduler) do this? Maybe we should have the Fests during the warm part of the year after winter but before the humid summers!!! It snowed in Detroit two times during pre-Fests. And thanks to Ken Nick Dear Gram: Joe's comments in MPC Gram 799 regarding Ration Book #1, as having stamps bound in a stapled cover, is certainly wrong. Ration Book #1 (OPA Form R-302) is indeed a flat sheet containing 28 coupons (stamps) and was folded twice to make a booklet. This is not an unusual form of Ration Book #1. Ration books #2, #3, #4 and #5 (printed, but never issued) contain multiple pages of coupons stapled or glued into a card cover. If the display contains a US ration Book #1 that was indeed stapled with a card cover, I would like to see a picture of it. Perhaps Ken Hallenbeck or someone else can verify or clarify what is there.
