Review of 1977 BNR here! By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski This is being written early in the week as by the time you read this we will be on the road. making another trip to Austin, Texas to visit the kids for Christmas. It hardly seems possible that a full year has passed since I started a Thurski with the same message. Time does fly when your retired and having fun. I just finished reviewing the December, 1977 issue of the Bank Note Reporter. There are two great articles in it that would be of interest to Gramsters. The cover story is written by Bill Doovas. If you don't know Bill, you have missed a very interesting person. We don't get to see much of him anymore as he has sold off his collectibles and now lives somewhere in South America if I remember correctly. We did see him at a show sometime within the last two years and had dinner with him. While we ordered, Bill asked for a plate and produced a bag of chicken that he had brought with him from home and made a meal of that. He kept telling us that he had to eat it before the salmonella bacteria became too pronounced. He was always a little unorthodox and the story in the Bank Note Reporter confirms that. Seems he found out shortly before the first Memphis show, that there would not be a souvenir card to commemorate that event. So he set out to make a souvenir card on his own except that he planned to use a vignette card produced and sold by the BEP portraying the Capitol as the basic card, then had the Memphis data overprinted on it by a west coast printer. He goes on to tell in detail how he bought slightly more than 300 cards from the BEP over the phone and proceeded with the set up. About ten days before the show, he got a call from the director of the BEP inquiring what he was doing with that many cards and after the director heard his story, Doovas was told that what he was doing was not within the uses for the vignettes that the BEP sold to the public. Furthermore, he was told if he continued, he was in violation of title 18, Section 709 of the U.S. Code and that he could be fined and imprisoned. Anyway, the story goes on as only Bill Doovas can tell a story, complete with the smallest of details evolving the Secret Service, the directors successor, two congressmen and several thousand words. In the long run, Doovas sold the cards with a disclaimer printed on the card stating that the BEP printed only the vignette while the rest of the card was the work of a private individual. All's well that ends well. Fred Schwan's column of Military Vignettes spins another great tale, this one about the Norwegian notes arranged by the government-in-exile for the liberation of Norway. Norway had intended to remain neutral if war broke out in Europe. Norway resisted allied pressure to allow transient of allied troops to assist Finland. Then unexpectedly, the Germans invaded Norway on April 9, 1940. Norway was totally unprepared for the invasion. Although the German invasion advanced swiftly still some areas resisted stiffly. Many isolated communities had to issue emergency currency because of regular currency shortages. World War II Remembered has a comprehensive listing of these issues. They are very scarce, expensive and difficult to come by. Other than the Moster Kommune notes, you very seldom find them being offered. By June, the military situation was so bleak, that King Haukon VII and the government fled to London and hostilities ceased. The Germans set up the Norwegian traitor, Vidkun Quisling as the head of the puppet state. The government-in-exile considered it a high priority for the allies to liberate Norway. They arranged for the printing of an issue of paper money to be used in the liberation. The notes printed by Waterlow and Sons were in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Kroner. In anticipation of an early liberation, the notes were dated 1942. After the optimistic 1942 passed, a second printing of only the 5, 10, 50 and 100 Kroner denominations were produced with a 1944 date and the word Krigssedlar (War bank note) added. The 1944 issue as well as the 1 and 2 kroner from the 1942 printing were issued. However the notes saw only limited circulation and only until the currency reform of August/September 1945. Thus these notes, even the 1 and 2 kroner are rare. The 1942 series was never issued although a few complete sets with very low serial numbers do exist in private collections. I saw the number 5 set pictured in WWII Remembered several years ago at a Memphis show. They are truly spectacular notes. The are vividly colored and would be the hallmark of any collection. Since this is the last Thurski before Christmas, I would like to wish each and every Gramster a Very Happy and Merry Holiday Season.
